Abstract
The present invention relates to a bioactive scaffold comprising a silver-loaded antimicrobial composition that acts as a therapeutic device, specifically a scaffold, for wound healing and other related applications in the field of tissue engineering. The antimicrobial composition of the present invention primarily comprises at least one absorbable matrix for cell-matrix and cell-cell interactions (a natural polymer), a calcium crosslinking component for the formation of an in-situ fibrin gel, and a nanoemulsion with colloidal silver nanoparticles as a bioactive compound to help control biofilm and infections in the wound. Such scaffolds with the antimicrobial composition act as dressings and methods to assist in the healing process of chronic wounds by aiding in the management of infections and / or enhancing their biological activity.
