Solid state linear welding system and method

Abstract

The invention relates to a system for joining first and second metal workpieces, including a frame and a platform to which one of the workpieces can be secured. The platform is attached to the frame by an attachment assembly that allows the platform to move with respect to the frame along a predetermined oscillation path. The system also includes a locating assembly for positioning the second workpiece in a predetermined position relative to the first workpiece to define a space therebetween when the first workpiece is secured to the platform. Further, the system includes one or more gears positioned to engage the platform to cause oscillatory movement of the platform along the oscillation path when the gears are rotated. One or more heating elements may be placed in the space, in order to heat corresponding parts of the first and second workpieces to a hot working temperature, to which said parts may be plastically deformed.
