AI Technical Summary

Technical Problem

Existing methods for integrating sensors into vehicle tires face challenges such as additional weight, processing complexity, and limitations in container shape and location due to separate attachment or solid core drum processes, which restrict the ability to accommodate non-planar sensors and require multiple core sizes for different tire types.

Method used

A method involving an inner tube with an insert that carries a cavity, inflated during molding to form a container within the tire, allowing integration of sensors without separate attachment, using a flexible inner tube to press the insert against the tire's inner surface, and deflating to remove the insert post-molding, forming a container with a lip for secure sensor retention.

Benefits of technology

Enables the integration of non-planar sensors within tires without additional weight or processing steps, allowing for flexible container formation and secure sensor retention, while eliminating the need for solid cores and varying core sizes.

Abstract

A method of molding a tire that includes the steps of placing an uncured tire in a mold and providing an inner tube with a flexible portion and an insert with a cavity configured to mold the inner tube to the tire. The inner tube contains a fluid and is inflated within the mold, and the uncured tire material flows into the cavity of the insert. Sufficient heat and pressure are applied to the uncured tire to at least partially cure it while it is in the mold. The material in the insert forms the inner tube so that it becomes integral with the other parts of the tire. The mold is then opened to retrieve the tire.
