AI Technical Summary

Technical Problem

Existing automated peritoneal dialysis (APD) systems face issues such as delayed treatment start times due to sealing problems with pneumatic cassette systems, acoustic noise, and the need for manual handling of used dialysis fluid, which can be cumbersome and inconvenient for patients.

Method used

A simplified APD system using a peristaltic pump and disposable assembly with a peristaltic pump actuator, a movable rotation track for easy cassette loading, and a control unit that automates the process of draining used dialysis fluid to a domestic drain, reducing noise and improving user experience.

Benefits of technology

The system provides a cost-effective, quiet, and efficient APD solution that simplifies the handling of used dialysis fluid, ensuring safe pressure limits and accurate fluid management, allowing patients to disconnect and start their day promptly after treatment.

Abstract

A peritoneal dialysis system (10) comprises a cycler (20) including a pump actuator (60); a disposable assembly including a pumping portion (126) operable with the pump actuator (60), a patient line (122e) positioned for fluid communication with the pumping portion (126), and a drainage container (124a) positioned for fluid communication with the pumping portion (126); and a control unit (50) configured to cause the actuator (60) pumping portion (126) to (i) run a peritoneal dialysis treatment in which fresh dialysis fluid is pumped through the patient line (122e) to a patient and used dialysis fluid is pumped from the patient to the drainage container (124a), and (ii) at the end of the treatment, pump the used dialysis fluid from the drainage container (124a), through the patient line (122e), to a home drain.
