AI Technical Summary

Technical Problem

Existing methods for manufacturing perovskite solar cells (PSCs) are not scalable enough to compete with silicon-based solar cells due to the complexity of depositing and drying perovskite solutions at high speeds, leading to non-uniform and defective layers on flexible substrates.

Method used

A method involving a two-step drying process with a flexible substrate, using a perovskite solution with a high solvent content and low-boiling solvents, combined with controlled solvent evaporation and rapid drying, to form uniform perovskite layers at high speeds.

Benefits of technology

Enables the production of uniform perovskite layers on flexible substrates at high speeds, facilitating low-cost, high-efficiency solar cells and photovoltaic devices with reduced equipment costs.

Abstract

A method for manufacturing a perovskite layer includes providing a flexible substrate; providing a perovskite solution comprising an initial amount of solvent and perovskite precursor materials and a total solids concentration between 30 percent and 70 percent by weight of its saturation concentration; depositing the perovskite solution onto the substrate; removing a first portion of the solvent from the deposited perovskite solution and increasing the total solids concentration of the perovskite solution to at least 75 percent of its saturation concentration by a first drying step;and removing a second portion of the solvent from the deposited perovskite solution with a second drying step having a higher solvent evaporation rate that causes saturation and a conversion reaction in the deposited perovskite solution resulting in the formation of perovskite crystals or the formation of a perovskite intermediate phase, wherein the residence time of the first drying step is at least 5 times greater than the residence time of the second drying step. A continuous online method for the high-speed production of photovoltaic devices and a perovskite solution for use in the high-speed fabrication of a uniform perovskite layer to enable the low-cost production of high-efficiency perovskite devices are also described.
