AI Technical Summary

Technical Problem

In geothermal wells, the thermal expansion of wellbore fluids increases pressure loading on liner hangers, which existing technologies fail to effectively manage, especially at extreme temperatures.

Method used

The use of pressure reducing metal elements, such as phase-changing or reactive metals, placed between the sealing elements of a liner hanger to provide additional volumetric space for thermal expansion, reducing the annular pressure by melting or reacting with wellbore fluids, thereby alleviating the pressure increase.

Benefits of technology

This solution effectively reduces the pressure within the sealed void space, maintaining the integrity of the seal and anchoring capabilities of the liner hanger, even at high temperatures and in high-salinity environments, without altering the liner hanger's outer diameter or profile.

Abstract

Short casing hangers and methods of use. An example method includes positioning a short casing hanger in a well; wherein the short casing hanger comprises: two sealing elements disposed on the outside of the short casing hanger and having a vacuum space between them, and a pressure-reducing metal element disposed between the two sealing elements. The method further includes trapping a well fluid in the vacuum space; wherein the well fluid thermally expands in the vacuum space and creates an annular pressure in the vacuum space; and reducing the annular pressure by materially altering the pressure-reducing metal element.
