Abstract

A control device for an internal combustion engine includes an electronic control unit (0) configured to: control the internal combustion engine in any of a first driving mode where a target of a throttle valve (32) opening degree is determined with respect to an accelerator pedal depression amount, a second driving mode where the target of the throttle valve opening degree is determined to a value smaller than in the first driving mode, and a third driving mode where the target of the throttle valve opening degree is determined to a value smaller than in the second driving mode, gradually change the throttle valve opening degree from a target in a driving mode before transition toward the target in a driving mode after transition in performing transition of the driving mode, and prohibit direct transition between the first driving mode and the third driving mode.
