Abstract

A computer-implemented method for designing and assessing the performance of a hollow fibre membrane contactor (MBC) in a carbon capture process to remove carbon dioxide from a flue gas using a solvent having at least one component is described. The method comprises: forming a MBC model to simulate the carbon capture process, the MBC model comprises model parameters, model equations and boundary conditions associated with the MBC and the carbon capture process, wherein the model parameters and model equations include parameters and equations associated with absorption of one or more of sulphur oxides (SOx), nitrogen oxides (NOx), oxygen (O2), argon (Ar), carbon monoxide (CO), hydrogen (H2) and helium (He) in the solvent to account for solvent degradation; and determining CO2 absorption in the solvent using the MBC model for designing and assessing the performance of the MBC. A system for designing and assessing the performance of a hollow fibre membrane contactor (MBC) in a carbon capture process to remove carbon dioxide from a flue gas using a solvent having at least one component is also described in an embodiment.
