Load binder apparatus

Abstract

The invention relates to a load binder apparatus, kit and method for securing loads. Known ratchet load binders can induce twisting in chains or cables because the lever is rotated about the same axis as the tensioning shaft. This can allow the chains or cables to untwist in use and reduce tension. A load binder apparatus is provided comprising a substantially cylindrical housing, a threaded shaft rotatably mounted at least partially in the housing and comprising a first gear, first and second attachment members comprising internal threads to engage respective ends or portions of the threaded shaft, a second gear rotatably mounted to the housing and configured to engage the first gear to rotate the shaft about a first axis to move the attachment members in opposing directions along the first axis, and a lever pivotally mounted to the housing to operate the second gear, the second gear being rotatable about a second axis perpendicular or substantially perpendicular to the first axis. The first gear and / or the second gear is a helical gear or a screw gear. By arranging the lever to pivot about a perpendicular axis and by driving through helical or screw gearing, twisting in the load-engaging members is reduced relative to known binders.
