Abstract

METHODS FOR PREPARING A POPULATION OF ISLET-LIKE CELLS DERIVED FROM STEM CELLS (SC1C) ARE DESCRIBED, WHERE SUCH METHODS INCLUDE THE CULTURE OF PRECURSOR CELLS SUCH AS PANCREATIC PROGENITOR CELLS, Immature pancreatic endocrine precursor cells (SC-ICs) and one or more differentiation methods that promote the differentiation of precursor cells into more differentiated cells to obtain an SC-IC population that includes cells similar to mature pancreatic beta cells are described. Cell differentiation compositions useful in carrying out the methods and SC-IC populations obtained by carrying out the methods are also described. Also described are compositions and implantable devices comprising SC-IC populations, which are useful for the treatment of metabolic disorders such as diabetes mellitus (diabetes).
