Abstract

A liquid-liquid phase separator with flow stabilization and quantitative phase measurement is presented, enabling the determination of the essential oil recovery process kinetics, recovery yield, and energy efficiency. The separator is also equipped with an automated system for controlling the outlet flows of essential oil and Florida Water. The phase separator consists primarily of a separator tank into which a mixture of Florida Water and essential oil enters. The separator tank is sized to efficiently separate the phases, and a baffle screen is located at the inlet end to minimize turbulence. A cylinder for accumulating the essential oil and for real-time monitoring of the oil volume obtained is located at the top of the separator tank. The phase separator equipment is equipped with a set of integrated sensors, actuators and controllers that enable its automated operation.
