Abstract
The present invention relates to animal feed. Specifically, it relates to a supplemented feed adapted for guinea pigs. The invention is a feed composition for guinea pigs comprising pitahaya peel flour in an amount of 0.3%-1.7% by weight of the total feed. The invention offers, among others, the following technical advantages: It provides a functional additive of natural origin derived from an agro-industrial byproduct, usable in the oral feeding of guinea pigs; it allows for the modulation of blood lipid profile parameters (particularly total cholesterol and triglycerides) under controlled experimental conditions; it maintains productive performance without statistically significant differences in the productive parameters evaluated in the trial; and it provides a potential alternative to conventional vitamin C supplementation by supplying vitamin C and other functional compounds present in the flour.
