AI Technical Summary
Existing insect repellents, particularly those containing hazardous chemicals, are ineffective and pose risks to humans and animals, necessitating the development of a safer, long-lasting, and effective all-natural insect repellent formulation.
A composition comprising Virgin Coconut oil, Citronella (Cymbopogon citratus) oil, and Neem (Azadirachta indica) kernel oil, combined with petroleum jelly or shea butter and white wax or beeswax, is formulated to create a safe and effective insect repellent soft balm.
The balm effectively repels insects such as mosquitoes and ticks without harm to humans or animals, providing long-lasting protection.
Abstract
Description
SPECIFICATIONSALL-NATURAL INSECT REPELLENT SOFT BALM USING VIRGIN COCONUT OIL WITHCITRONELLA (Cymbopogon citratus) AND NEEM (Azaodlrachta indica) KERNEL OILTechnical field of the utility model:The present utility model relates in general to insect repellents, but more particularlyto a composition of an all-natural insect repellent soft balm using Virgin Coconut oil withCitronella (Cymbopogon citratus) and Neem (Azadirachta indica) kernel oil. Background of the utility model:Known Prior Art US7985432B2 discloses the compositions and methods useful inrepelling target pests, such as insects from target areas. Commercially available insecticidescontain active components that are hazardous not just to the target pests, but also to humansand domestic animals if applied in confined areas and delivered as aerosol sprays. Attemptshave been undertaken to produce effective insecticidal compositions that are successful ineliminating the targeted insect pests while being non-poisonous to humans and animals. However, non-poisonous insecticidal formulations have limited efficacy. Therefore, new andeffective insecticidal formulations that are long-lasting and less harmful are required.Known Prior Art US20140050809A1 discloses that the essential oils have been foundto be effective or beneficial in repelling pests because of certain properties. For example, oilssuch as citronella contains monoterpene aldehydes, which have been reported to be effectivein repelling insects in some of the published articles found in NLM / NIH.Know Prior Art US5589181A discloses that at least one carrier consisting of natural ornature-identical vegetal or animal fatty oils should be added to the repellent to slow down theevaporation of the active ingredients and to achieve effects for a longer period of time.Examples of natural and nature-identical vegetal or animal fatty oils are sunflower oil, coconutoil, palm oil, fish oil, and rape-seed oil. Therefore, it is object of the present utility model to develop an all-natural insectrepellent soft balm using Virgin Coconut oil with Citronella (Cymbopogon citratus) and Neem(Azadirachta indica) kernel oil as the main active ingredients. These main active ingredientsare all natural and commercially available. Furthermore, the composition is safe to the humanbody and animals, and it can be used for topical applications to repel insects such asmosquitos, ticks, flies, and other biting insects.Summary of the utility model:The present utility model relates in general to insect repellents, but more particularlyto a composition of an all-natural insect repellent soft balm using Virgin Coconut oil withCitronella (Cymbopogon citratus) and Neem (Azadirachta indica) kernel oil.Detailed description of the utility model:The present utility model provides all-natural insect repellent soft balm that can be canbe applied topically on humans and / or animals to repel insects. The composition comprisesessentially of:Components / Ingredients Volume and Percent by Volumea. Virgin coconut oil 100 mL (53.2%)b. Petroleum jelly or shea butter 50 mL (26.6%)c. Citronella 5 mL (2.7%)d. Neem kernel oil 3 mL (1.6%)e. White wax or beeswax 30 mL (16.0%)The process of producing all-natural insect repellent soft balm using Virgin Coconut oilwith Citronella (Cymbopogon citratus) and Neem (Azadirachta indica) kernel oil comprises thesteps of: heating 100 mL virgin coconut oil and 50 mL petroleum jelly or shea butter in a 500-mL in a water bath; mixing the ingredients while melting; adding 30 mL white wax or beeswaxand mixing the granules into the coconut oil mixture until completely melted; testing the textureof the mixture; removing the beaker from the heat while stirring the contents continuously;adding 5 mL of citronella oil and 3 mL neem kernel oil upon cooling; stirring thoroughly toensure uniform mixture; pouring the mixture in a jar; and cooling the product.
