Display cable continuity tester

Abstract

A display cable continuity tester for detecting open or intermittent conductors in VGA and HDMI cables is disclosed. The tester comprises a casing, matching connector receptacles, a power source, a power switch, and light-emitting diode continuity indicators corresponding to respective connector contacts. The contacts of one receptacle are joined to a common energizing bus, while each contact of the other receptacle is connected through a respective current-limiting resistor and continuity indicator to a common return bus. When a cable is connected between the receptacles, each intact conductor completes a respective circuit, causing its corresponding indicator to illuminate simultaneously with the indicators of the other intact conductors. An unilluminated or flickering indicator signifies an open or intermittent conductor. Embodiments include VGA, HDMI, and combined VGA and HDMI testing sections. The tester may be powered by a rechargeable battery or an external power adapter.
