A process for the preparation of calcium acetate

Abstract

A process has been developed for the preparation of food grade calcium acetate from indigenously available lime ore and commercial acetic acid whereas in the existing processes it is prepared by liming of pyroligneous liquors from hardwood distillation or by liming of vinegar obtained by fermentation, in both these processes impurities have to be removed by further cosily processing. In our developed process solution of commercial acetic acid is reacted with powdered lime, the reaction is exothermic, the calcium acetate formed solubilizcs in the reaction mixture thai is filtered, evaporated and crystallized. Crystals obtained are dried at 50-6()°C. The product yield is 95-100%. Food grade calcium acetate has been re-crystallized to get laboratory grade chemical and the yield of this product is 92%.
