A process for the Preparation of Phenethyl Alcohol

Abstract

The synthesis of phenethyl alcohol is carried out by the esterification of phenylacetic acid in the presences of catalyst (sulphuric acid) at 20-40oC which was dried by adding anhydrous sodium sulfate (Na2SO4) to absorb excess of sulphuric acid and water, formed during the reaction. The filtered is reduced by sodium metal at room temperature and the said compound phenethyl alcohol has antidepressant like activity. As this compound has very pleasant fragrance it can be used in perfumes, and without taking any oral dose it relief depression.
