The subject of the application is a reactor for conducting an exothermic methanation reaction of carbon oxides and a method of conducting an exothermic methanation reaction using this reactor.A reactor for the exothermic methanation reaction of carbon oxides comprising a variable volume cylinder with an inlet channel (161, 171, 172) for introducing methanation reaction reactants: hydrogen and carbon monoxide and / or carbon dioxide into the cylinder and an outlet channel for removing methanation reaction reactants from the cylinder, a catalyst for catalyzing the exothermic methanation reaction involving the reactants in the cylinder, a crankshaft and a piston with a front face for reciprocating movement in the cylinder to change the cylinder volume, the piston being movably connected to the crankshaft in such a way that the reciprocating movement of the piston causing an increase in the cylinder volume caused by the increase in the volume of the reactants as a result of the exothermic methanation reaction in the cylinder causes rotation of the crankshaft, and the rotational movement of the crankshaft causes reciprocating movement of the piston causing a reduction in the cylinder volume.
