Underride protection system and method for preventing a vehicle from driving underneath another vehicle

Abstract

The subject of the application is a front underrun protection system and a method for protecting against underruns. A passenger car (1) is equipped with radar speed and distance measuring devices (2) located at the rear and front of the vehicle. The radar devices evaluate the relative speed of the vehicle in relation to the vehicle ahead and the vehicle approaching from behind, as well as the distance between these vehicles, while the vehicle is moving at a low speed or stationary. The system is also equipped with temperature (3), precipitation (4), and speed (5) sensors, an impact sensor (6), video cameras (7) recording images from all sides of the vehicle, and a satellite navigation system (GPS) vehicle position sensor (8). The radar devices (2), sensors (3, 4, 5, 6), cameras (7), and a GPS vehicle position receiver (8) are connected to a system control unit (9) simultaneously connected to the steering wheel control actuators (10) and brakes (11).
