Method for increasing short-term strength and improving the fatigue life of metal rod elements

Abstract

The subject of the application is a method for increasing the ultimate strength and fatigue life of metal rod elements, in which the rod is subjected to pre-deformation by applying a cyclic load with two components—axial and torsional, both components having sinusoidal time histories of equal frequency and a 90° phase shift, with the torsional component having an oscillatory pattern and the axial component having a positive mean value. The method combines two strengthening mechanisms: strengthening by non-proportional loading and strengthening by creep pre-deformation.
