Claims
1. An aerosol generating device comprising: cavity for placing an aerosol-forming substrate; an electric heater configured to heat an aerosol-forming substrate when it is placed in a cavity to provide the user with a sensation of perceiving the inhaled aerosol; a rechargeable electrical power source for generating at least a first sensation and a second sensation without intermediate recharging between the first and second sensations; and a controller configured to control the supply of power from a rechargeable electrical power source to the heating element; wherein the controller is configured to determine the rate of increase in the temperature of the electric heater during the first period of time of the first sensation by determining the time required for the temperature of the electric heater to increase from the first predetermined temperature to the second predetermined temperature during the first period of time of the first sensation, and the controller is also configured to prevent power supply to the heater during the second sensation if the rate of increase in temperature of the electric heater during the first period of time of the first sensation is below a predetermined threshold rate, and if the second sensation is initiated before the expiration of a predetermined time interval from the first sensation.
2. The device according to claim 1, wherein the controller comprises an electrical storage element and is configured to store data on the rate of temperature increase determined during the last sensation.
3. The device according to any one of paragraphs 1, 2, in which the controller is configured to check the rate of temperature increase and to check the time interval between the first and second sensations when the user initiates the second sensation.
4. The device according to any one of paragraphs 1, 2, in which the controller is configured to check the rate of temperature increase at the end of the first sensation.
5. The device of claim 4, wherein the controller is configured to, upon determining that the rate of temperature increase is below a predetermined threshold value, issue a warning to the user of the required waiting time via the user interface.
6. The device of claim 5, wherein the user warning includes an indication to the user of the waiting duration.
7. The device according to any one of claims 5, 6, in which the warning to the user throughout the entire waiting interval includes a visual indication by means of an optical element that the device is not ready to create the second sensation.
8. The device according to claim 7, in which the controller is configured to determine the initial temperature of the electric heater, and is further configured to prevent power from being supplied to the heater if the initial temperature of the electric heater is higher than a predetermined threshold temperature.
9. The device of claim 8, wherein the threshold temperature is in the range of 60°C to 120°C, 80°C to 100°C, or approximately 80°C.
10. The device of any one of the preceding claims, wherein the controller is configured to supply power from an electrical power source to the electrical heater in accordance with the first heating profile during the second time period of each sensation.
11. A device according to any one of the preceding claims, wherein the controller is configured to regulate the supply of power from the electrical power source to the electrical heater based on the determined rate of increase in temperature of the electrical heater during the first period of time of the first sensation.
12. The device of any one of the preceding claims, wherein the controller is configured to supply power from the electrical power source to the electrical heater in accordance with the second heating profile during the second sensing time period when the determined rate of increase in temperature of the electrical heater during the first sensing time period is below a predetermined threshold value.
13. A device according to any one of the preceding claims, wherein the controller is configured to determine an ambient temperature and to supply power from an electrical power source to the electrical heater in accordance with the first heating profile when the determined ambient temperature is below a threshold ambient temperature.
14. An aerosol generating system comprising: an aerosol generating device according to any one of the preceding claims and an aerosol generating article containing an aerosol-forming substrate.
15. A method of controlling an aerosol generating device having a cavity for containing an aerosol-forming substrate, a rechargeable electrical power source, and an electrical heater configured to heat the aerosol-forming substrate when the aerosol-forming substrate is contained within the cavity to provide a user with a sensation of perceiving an inhaled aerosol; wherein the rechargeable electrical power source is configured to generate at least a first sensation and a second sensation without intermediate recharging between the first and second sensations; wherein the method includes the following steps: control of the power supply from an electrical power source to an electric heater; determining the rate of increase of the temperature of the electric heater during the first period of time of the first sensation by determining the time required for the temperature of the electric heater to increase from the first predetermined temperature to the second predetermined temperature during the first period of time of the first sensation, and preventing the supply of power to the heater upon the second sensation if the rate of increase in temperature of the electric heater during the first period of time of the first sensation is below a predetermined threshold rate, and if the second sensation is initiated before the expiration of a predetermined time interval from the first sensation.
