Claims

1. A method for modulating a trait of agronomic importance in a plant obtained or derived from a plant element, comprising: (a) treating the said plant element with a composition containing a microorganism, a product isolated from it or a culture broth containing it, or a solution or a dry composition, where the microorganism contains: i. gene glnR and at least one set of genes selected from the group consisting of 1)vnf; 2)anf; 3)hesA,nifB,nifD,nifH,nifK,nifE, andnifNand optionallyorf1; and 4) gene P-II, and / or nifA, and / or nifF, and / or nifJ, and / or nifL, and / or nifS, and / or nifW; ii. a polynucleotide sequence having at least 98% identity to at least 100 contiguous nucleotides of a sequence selected from the group consisting of SEQ ID NO: 1-293; where the microorganism is capable of fixing nitrogen; and (b) placing the plant element in a growing medium under conditions suitable for growing; wherein the plant obtained from the plant element of (b) exhibits a modulated trait of agronomic significance, compared to a plant obtained from the plant element not treated with the composition of (a).

2. The method according to claim 1, further comprising at least one additional microorganism.

3. The method according to claim 1, wherein the feature having agronomic significance is yield.

4. The method of claim 1, wherein the trait of agronomic significance is increased nitrogen utilization, nitrogen uptake, nitrogen distribution, and / or any combination and / or combination of the above.

5. The method of claim 1, wherein the trait having agronomic significance is improved NDVI, or chlorophyll content, or biomass, or yield, or any combination of improvements.

6. The method according to claim 1, further comprising at least one additional microorganism.

10. An isolated bacterial strain comprising a polynucleotide sequence having at least 97% sequence identity to any one of SEQ ID NOs: 1-293.

A synthetic composition containing: a) an essentially isolated bacterial strain comprising: i. gene glnR and at least one set of genes selected from the group consisting of 1)vnf; 2)anf; 3)hesA,nifB,nifD,nifH,nifK,nifE, andnifNand optionallyorf1; and 4) gene P-II, and / or nifA, and / or nifF, and / or nifJ, and / or nifL, and / or nifS, and / or nifW; ii. a polynucleotide sequence having at least 98% identity to at least 100 contiguous nucleotides of a sequence selected from the group consisting of SEQ ID NO: 1-293; And b) at least one heterologous composition selected from the group consisting of a plant element, a formulation component, an agricultural composition, a carrier, and any combination of the above; wherein said substantially isolated bacterial strain is present in the synthetic composition in an amount effective to produce an improved phenotype in the plant with which it is associated; wherein said substantially isolated bacterial strain is present in a concentration of at least about 10 2 CFU / ml in liquid formulation or at least approximately 10 2 CFU / gram in a non-liquid composition; and wherein said substantially isolated bacterial strain is capable of fixing nitrogen.

12. The synthetic composition according to claim 11, further comprising at least one additional microorganism.

13. The synthetic composition of claim 11, wherein the plant element is a seed, leaf, root, whole plant, rhizome, tuber, or any combination and / or plurality of the above.

14. The synthetic composition according to claim 13, wherein the seed contains a transgene.

15. The synthetic composition according to claim 11, wherein the component of the composition is selected from the group consisting of a compound that improves the stability of the microorganism, a preservative, a carrier, a surfactant, an anti-complexing agent, and any combination thereof.

A plurality of synthetic compositions according to claim 11, wherein said synthetic compositions are essentially contained in an object selected from the group consisting of a test tube, a vial, a jar, an ampoule, a package, a vessel, a sack, a box, a reservoir, an envelope, a cardboard box, a container, an elevator, a shipping container, a truck body, and a crate.

18. A plurality of synthetic compositions according to claim 11, wherein the synthetic compositions are at a temperature below zero degrees Celsius.

The synthetic composition of claim 11, wherein the plant element is obtained from a plant selected from the group consisting of maize, soybeans, wheat, cotton, canola, rapeseed, cucumber, tomato, pepper, potato, strawberry, orange, lemon, lime, apple, green beans, zucchini, pumpkin, peas, lettuce, broccoli, celery, cauliflower, rye, millet, oats, sugar beets, sugar cane, rice, almonds, pistachios, walnuts, alfalfa, lawn grass, clover, orchard grass, Bermuda grass, ryegrass, bluegrass, ornamental plants, switchgrass, aquatic plants, sesame, sunflower, carinata and sorghum.

20. The synthetic composition according to claim 11, wherein the agricultural composition additionally comprises a growing medium.

21. The synthetic composition of claim 20, wherein the growing medium comprises soil.

22. A plurality of synthetic compositions according to claim 21, wherein the plurality of synthetic compositions are placed in the soil in a regular manner with substantially the same distance between each of the synthetic compositions.
