AI Technical Summary
Existing cast side frames for railway bogies have a high weight due to lug-thickenings in critical areas, which affects their strength and fatigue resistance.
The design incorporates extended lugs-thickenings on the inner surface of the upper belt, positioned below the top flange, reducing the length of these lugs to decrease weight while maintaining strength and fatigue resistance by increasing the thickness of vertical walls in heavily loaded areas.
The solution achieves a reduction in weight while enhancing fatigue resistance and ensuring uniform crystallization, resulting in a denser metal structure without shrinkage defects.

Abstract
Description
[0001] The proposed utility model relates to the field of railway transport, in particular, to the design of a cast side frame of a three-element bogie of freight cars.
[0002] Three-piece bogies with cast side frames are widely used as freight rail car bogies in the Russian Federation and CIS countries. Such designs include, for example, the 18-100 bogie, whose side frames were adopted as a prototype. From the book "Wagons," edited by V.V. Lukin, Moscow, Transport Publishing House, pp. 74-77, Fig. 5.3 a side frame of a railway bogie is known, in the middle part of which an opening is placed for the central spring set, formed by an upper belt with consoles forming external jaws, a lower belt of closed section with a support platform for the spring set and vertical walls with a platform for fastening a friction bar, connecting the upper and lower belts, and at the ends - openings for axle box assemblies of wheel pairs, formed by external jaws, supporting surfaces of the upper belt, as well as internal jaws connecting with inclined belts.
[0003] A side frame of a railway car bogie is known, accepted as the closest analogue, an upper chord with consoles forming axlebox openings with internal and external angles, a lower chord with a support platform for a spring set, vertical and inclined chords connecting the upper and lower chords, while on the inner surface of the side wall of the upper chord in the areas of the internal angles of the axlebox openings, lugs-thickenings are made in the form of extended sections located from the junction points of the lower shelves of the upper and inclined chords to the upper shelf of the upper chord of the side frame (RU 174094U1, published 02.10.2017).
[0004] The disadvantage of the side frame, which is accepted as the closest analogue, is the increased weight of the product.
[0005] The objective of the proposed technical solution is to reduce the weight of the cast side frame in the area where the inclined chord connects to the upper chord, while ensuring the required strength, fatigue resistance and quality of the cast side frame.
[0006] The technical problem posed is solved by the fact that in the design of the side frame, in the middle part of which there is an opening for the central spring set, formed by the upper belt with consoles forming the external jaws, the lower belt of closed section with a support platform for the spring set and vertical walls with a platform for fastening the friction bar, connecting the upper and lower belts, and at the ends - openings for the axle box assemblies of the wheel pairs, formed by the external jaws, the supporting surfaces of the upper belt, as well as the internal jaws connecting with the inclined belts, in contrast to the prototype object, the lugs-thickenings are made in the form of extended sections located on the inner surface of the side wall of the upper belt, between the junction of the lower shelves of the upper and inclined belts, and the upper shelf of the upper belt. The top of the lugs is located below the top flange of the upper chord, which contributes to a weight reduction due to the shorter length of these lugs. At the same time, in the most heavily loaded areas, in the areas where the lower flanges of the upper and inclined chords meet, the thickness of the vertical walls, taking into account the lugs, is greater in these areas than outside the lugs, sufficient to ensure the component's strength and fatigue resistance.
[0007] The claimed technical solution is explained by drawings, which schematically show: Fig. 1 - the main view of the side frame; Fig. 2 - a top view of the side frame; Fig. 3 - a section along the line A-A shown in Fig. 2; Fig. 4 - a section along the line B-B shown in Fig. 3; Fig. 5 - an axonometric projection of the side frame with a section.
[0008] As shown in Fig. 1, in the middle part of the claimed design there is an opening 1 for the central spring set, and at the ends there are openings 2 for the axle boxes of the wheel pairs. The opening 1 for the central spring set is formed by the upper chord 3 with consoles forming the external jaws 4, the lower chord 5 of closed section with a support platform 6 for the spring set and vertical walls 7 with a platform 8 for fastening the friction bar, connecting the upper 3 and lower chords 5, support surfaces 9 of the upper chord, as well as internal jaws 10, connecting with the inclined chords 11. On the internal surfaces 12 of the side walls of the upper chord 3 in the zones of the internal corners of the axle box openings 2, lugs-thickenings 13 are made in the form of extended sections, between the junction of the lower shelves of the upper 3 and inclined 11 chords, and the upper shelf of the upper chord 3. In this case, the upper part of the lugs-thickenings 13 is located at a distance L below the upper shelf of the upper chord 3.The greater the specified distance L, the lower the weight of the side frame, while ensuring strength and fatigue resistance.
[0009] The technical effect of the proposed solution is to increase the fatigue resistance and quality of the cast side frame in the area where the inclined flange connects to the upper flange by using thickening bosses on the inner surface of the vertical wall while reducing the weight of the part compared to the prototype, as well as providing conditions for uniform crystallization and obtaining dense metal without shrinkage defects.
