Description

[0001] The group of inventions relates to laser technology, in particular to a laser module consisting of several single laser diodes, the radiation of which is introduced into an optical fiber, and is intended for pumping fiber lasers.

[0002] These laser modules allow the combined power of several semiconductor sources to produce high-brightness radiation in an optical fiber while maintaining a relatively compact footprint. Typically, to couple the radiation from several laser diodes into a fiber, spatially combining individual diodes into a common beam is used.

[0003] A semiconductor device (China Patent No. 114498287, IPC G02B 6 / 42, H01S 5 / 024, 5 / 40, published May 13, 2022) is known. It consists of a housing with an internal cavity designed to accommodate laser diodes, a collimating mirror, and a reflective mirror. The laser diodes are soldered onto a stepped base within the housing's internal cavity. The laser diodes occupy separate stepped mounting sites, which are arranged diagonally at an angle, and the height of each stepped base is the same. This ensures uniform heat transfer from each laser diode.

[0004] Design flaws include the lack of fastening elements for the semiconductor device to the mounting surface. The resulting bending moments at the base of the housing can lead to misalignment of the optical axis and, consequently, to loss of radiation.

[0005] A semiconductor laser is known (China Patent No. 219226885, IPC H01S 5 / 022, 5 / 202315, published on June 20, 2023), consisting of a housing including a cover and a base in which a cavity is formed. A first mounting base is located on the left side of the cavity, a second mounting base is located on the right side, and a third mounting base is located at the bottom of the housing between the first and second mounting bases. Laser chips are located on the first and second mounting bases, and the third mounting base is used to install a collimating lens of the reflector. Grooves are formed in the bottoms of the cavities between the first and second mounting bases to reduce weight.

[0006] However, the presence of grooves on the mounting surface of the housing reduces the heat dissipation area from the structural elements that heat up during operation, reduces the efficiency of heat transfer from the laser chips to the mounting surface, and this leads to a reduction in the operating time.

[0007] A method for manufacturing a laser module is known (US Patent No. 8432945, IPC G 02 B 27 / 20, H 01 S 3 / 04, published April 30, 2013). The method includes manufacturing a housing, a cover, and a stepped base, installing and fixing laser diodes, microlenses, cylindrical lenses, and mirrors to the base, fixing the base in the housing, and placing an optical fiber in the housing. The method involves using individual carrier plates of the same height to fix the laser diodes to the stepped base. The laser diodes are fixed to the plate using adhesive or soldering. The plates are attached to a single stepped base using adhesive or soldering.

[0008] The advantage of this manufacturing method is the standardized diode module on a standard carrier wafer. For identical carrier wafers, it's easier to manufacture tooling for vacuum deposition of thin-film coatings, and it's also possible to mount laser diodes on these wafers with the required precision using automated soldering systems.

[0009] The disadvantages of this method include the need for multiple sequential operations to attach the laser diodes to the wafers. Attaching the wafers to a single base with adhesive increases thermal resistance and reduces the mechanical strength of the connections, while using a soldering method, such as solder foil, requires the use of an additional type of solder with a lower melting point than the solder used to attach the laser diodes to the wafers, reducing the device's possible storage and operating temperature range.

[0010] The closest analogue of the claimed group of inventions is a laser module and a method for its manufacture (RF Patent No. 2688888, IPC H 01 S 5 / 022, G 02 B 6 / 42, 27 / 16, published on 05 / 22 / 2019). A laser module, in the housing of which a stepped base is placed, on each step of which laser diodes are successively placed, on the front surface of the heat sinks of which microlenses, lenses and flat mirrors are fixed, and focusing lenses, placed in two orthogonal planes coaxially with the optical fiber, the mirrors are installed in such a way that their reflective surfaces are located at an angle of 45° to the emitting surface of the laser diodes, one part of the optical fiber is fixed in the housing, and the other in a protective tube located in a nozzle, which is fixed on the housing, the base is made with a successive decrease in the height of the steps towards the focusing lenses, while all lenses are made cylindrical.A thin-film metallization is applied to the upper surface of the base, the opening in the housing for the optical fiber is located in a projection of the housing, in which a closed groove is made for the material fixing the optical fiber, connecting with the opening for placing the optical fiber, in the fitting, in series from the housing, grooves are made connecting with the opening for the optical fiber: a groove for the material fixing the optical fiber, and a groove for the material fixing the protective tube, the housing is filled with ultra-pure chemically inert gas, the base is rigidly fixed in the housing.

[0011] A method for manufacturing a laser module includes producing a housing, a cover, and a stepped base; installing and securing laser diodes, microlenses, cylindrical lenses, and mirrors to the base; securing the base to the housing; and placing the optical fiber within the housing. The mirrors are mounted so that their reflective surfaces are oriented at a 45° angle to the emitting surface of the laser diodes. Microlenses are secured to the front surface of the heat sinks. The base is constructed with successively decreasing step heights, with the decrease in step height directed toward the optical fiber. Thin-film metallization is applied to the upper surface of the base by thermal evaporation of indium in a vacuum chamber; the laser diodes are secured simultaneously and in a single operation by soldering in a vapor-gas reducing atmosphere. The base is firmly attached to the housing. The optical fiber and focusing cylindrical lenses are then placed in the housing, aligned coaxially with the fiber, in two orthogonal planes. The optical fiber and focusing lenses are secured, and the nozzle is attached to the housing. The optical fiber is secured in the nozzle, a protective tube is installed in the nozzle, and the optical fiber is positioned in the nozzle. The protective tube is secured in the nozzle, the cap is installed, and the housing is filled with ultrapure, chemically inert gas. The optical fiber is fixed in the housing in two stages: first with a non-shrinking, ultraviolet-curable adhesive, then with an ultraviolet-curable polymer composition with a refractive index equal to or greater than the refractive index of the optical fiber cladding. The optical fiber is fixed in the nozzle using an ultraviolet-curable polymer composition with a refractive index equal to or greater than the refractive index of the optical fiber cladding.

[0012] However, the lack of a structural “decoupling” of the optical fiber attachment point from the bottom of the housing under thermal influences of the environment, as well as bending moments arising in the bottom of the housing during the operation of the laser module, can lead to misalignment of the optical axis and, as a consequence, to loss of radiation.

[0013] The unified technical result obtained by using the proposed group of inventions is an increase in the manufacturability of the design, the stability of the output parameters under increased operational loads (mechanical, thermal, shock and vibration).

[0014] The specified technical result in the implementation of the group of inventions on the subject - a laser diode pumping module with a fiber output is achieved by the fact that in the module housing there are installed: a stepped base, on each step of which laser diodes, microlenses, lenses and flat mirrors are successively placed, focusing lenses placed in two orthogonal planes coaxially with the optical fiber, the mirrors are installed in such a way that their reflective surfaces are located at an angle of 45 ° to the emitting surface of the laser diodes, on the front surface of the heat sinks of which microlenses are fixed, the base is made with a successive decrease in the height of the steps towards the focusing lenses installed in the bottom of the housing, thin-film metallization is applied to the upper surface of the base, one part of the optical fiber is fixed in the housing, and the other in a protective tube located in the nozzle, which is fixed on the housing, all lenses are made cylindrical, the opening in the housing for the optical fiber is located in a projection of the housing, in which a closed groove is made for the material fixing the optical fiber, connecting with the opening for placing the optical fiber, in the nozzle sequentially from the housing, grooves are made connecting with the opening for the optical fiber: a groove for the material fixing the optical fiber, and a groove for the material fixing the protective tube, the housing is filled with an ultra-pure chemically inert gas, the base is rigidly fixed in the housing. In this case, the module contains a dichroic filter, which is installed on the bottom of the housing between the base and the focusing lenses at an angle of 11° to 13° to the radiation axis, in the bottom of the housing there are openings located diagonally relative to the stepped base, on the outer side of the housing on the side of the stepped base there is an open groove under the fiber fastening area, a thermal interface is located between the stepped base and the housing,An additional thermal interface is located on the outer side of the bottom of the housing; the thermal interface and the additional thermal interface are made of a material with a high thermal conductivity coefficient.

[0015] In addition, the thermal interface can be made of indium or in the form of a graphite sheet, an additional thermal interface can be made of heat-conducting organosilicon paste KPT8 GOST 19783-74 or indium.

[0016] The specified technical result in the implementation of the group of inventions on the subject - the manufacturing method is achieved by the fact that in the method, including the manufacture of a housing, a cover, a stepped base, installation and fixation on the base of laser diodes, microlenses, lenses and mirrors, fixing the base in the housing rigidly, placing the optical fiber in the housing and coaxially focusing cylindrical lenses in two orthogonal planes, fixing the optical fiber and focusing lenses, fastening the nozzle to the housing, fixing the optical fiber in the nozzle, installing a protective tube in the nozzle, in which the optical fiber is located, fixing the protective tube in the nozzle, installing the cover, filling the housing with ultra-pure chemically inert gas, the installation of mirrors is carried out in such a way that their reflective surfaces are located at an angle of 45° to the emitting surface of the laser diodes, on the end surface of the heat sinks of which microlenses are fixed, the laser diodes are fixed simultaneously and in a single operation by soldering in a vapor-gas reducing environment, the optical fiber is fixed in the housing and fitting by an ultraviolet-curable polymer composition with a refractive index equal to or greater than the refractive index of the optical fiber cladding, the base is made with a sequential decrease in the height of the steps, and the base is placed in such a way that the decrease in the height of the steps is located towards the focusing lenses, thin-film metallization is applied to the upper surface of the base by thermal evaporation of indium in a vacuum chamber, the peculiarity is that a dichroic filter is installed in the housing between the base and the focusing lenses at an angle of 11° to 13° to the optical axis, an open groove is made on the outer side of the housing on the side of the base under the area of the fiber fastening, holes are made in the bottom of the housing located diagonally relative to the stepped base,The focusing lenses are adjusted using a variable process diaphragm; a thermal interface made of a material with a high thermal conductivity coefficient is placed between the base and the housing; an additional thermal interface made of a material with a high thermal conductivity coefficient is placed on the outer side of the housing bottom.

[0017] In addition, they use a thermal interface made of indium or in the form of a graphite sheet, an additional thermal interface made of heat-conducting organosilicon paste KPT8 GOST 19783-74 or indium.

[0018] The optical fiber is fixed in the housing instantly by filling the groove through which the fiber passes with a UV-curable polymer composition transparent to the laser diode wavelength. Aligning the focusing lenses and the fiber section using a variable aperture increases the efficiency of laser diode radiation coupling into the optical fiber. By placing an open groove on the outer surface of the housing bottom beneath the fiber attachment area and drilling holes in the housing diagonally relative to the stepped base for mounting the module in a designated location on the equipment (e.g., on a fiber laser heatsink), the module is resistant to impacts and vibrations, as well as mechanical and thermal stresses occurring in the housing bottom. This resulted in improved resilience to optical element misalignment and stable output parameters under increased operating loads (mechanical, thermal, shock, and vibration). At the same time, the number of manufacturing steps required for the laser pump module was reduced, improving the manufacturability of its design.

[0019] The claimed inventions are so interrelated that they form a single inventive concept. Indeed, a new manufacturing method was developed for the fiber-coupled laser diode pump module. Using this laser module allows for the desired technical result—improved design manufacturability and stable output parameters under increased operating loads (mechanical, thermal, shock, and vibration). Consequently, the claimed invention satisfies the requirement of "unity."

[0020] Analysis of the prior art revealed no prior art equivalents with features identical to all the essential features of the claimed group of inventions. Furthermore, no known influence of the features included in the claims on the technical result of the claimed technical solution was revealed. Consequently, each of the objects of the claimed group of inventions meets the criteria of "novelty" and "inventive step."

[0021] Fig. 1 shows a general view of the proposed device (top view).

[0022] Fig. 2 shows the shape of the stepped base.

[0023] Fig. 3 shows the optical fiber fastening unit (side view).

[0024] Fig. 4 shows section A-A.

[0025] The laser diode module with a fiber lead (Fig. 1, 2) comprises a housing 1 made of a heat-conducting material, for example copper; a stepped base 2 made of a heat-conducting material, for example copper (Fig. 2); insulators 3 located symmetrically on opposite sides of the base, electrical terminals 4 made in the form of shunt rods mounted on a switching board 5 and brought out into through holes of the housing 1, additional electrical terminals 6 and 7 connecting the insulators 3 of the base 2 with the switching board 5; laser diodes 81-8 mounted on the steps of the base 2 and aligned in one plane n , which are connected in series with each other via conductive wires (not shown in the figure). Cylindrical microlenses 91-9 are installed on the corresponding stage of the base for each laser diode. nwith an aspherical surface curvature profile, which are attached with UV adhesive to the end surface of the heat sink of each laser diode. Cylindrical lenses 101-10 are also installed on the corresponding stages of the base 2. n and flat mirrors 111-11 n , the reflective surface of which is located at an angle of 45° to the emitting surface of the laser diodes.

[0026] The laser module contains a dichroic filter 12 and two focusing cylindrical lenses 13, 14, located in two orthogonal planes, installed at different heights on platforms formed in the bottom of the housing 1. The dichroic filter 12 is installed on the bottom of the housing 1 on glue between the base 2 and the focusing lenses 13 and 14 and is placed at an angle of 11° to 13° to the radiation axis, the focusing lenses are placed coaxially with the optical fiber (OF) 15. The base 2 is made with a sequential decrease in the height of the steps towards the dichroic filter 12 and the focusing cylindrical lenses 13, 14. Thin-film metallization is applied to the upper surface of the base.

[0027] The section 16 of the fiber, freed from the polymer coating, is located in the through hole 17 of the projection 18 of the housing 1 (Fig. 3). In the projection 18 of the housing, a closed groove 19 is formed for the material fixing the optical fiber, connecting with the hole 17 for placing the optical fiber. Since the groove 19 is made closed, it uncovers an incomplete section of the hole 17, leaving a part of the projection 18 of the housing, which serves as a diaphragm, blocking radiation that does not enter the fiber.

[0028] The laser module contains a fitting 20 for placing an optical fiber made of a heat-conducting material, which is fixed to the housing and connected to the opening 17. In the fitting 20, grooves are made sequentially from the housing, connecting with the opening of the fitting for the optical fiber: a groove 21 for the material fixing the optical fiber, and a groove 22 for the material fixing the protective tube 23. Thus, one part of the optical fiber 15 is fixed in the housing, and the other in the protective tube 23, located in the fitting 20.

[0029] Around the fitting 20 and the protective tube 23, a heat-shrinkable fixing protective tube 24 is placed. The housing 1 is provided with a protective cover 25, an open groove 26 made on the outer side of the housing under the fiber fastening area on the side of the base 2 under the projection 18 and the groove 19, as well as holes 27 (Fig. 1), located diagonally relative to the base 2, and the location of the holes 27 does not fall under the fiber fastening area.

[0030] Between the stepped base 2 and the housing 1, a thermal interface 30 (Fig. 4) made of a material with a high thermal conductivity coefficient, for example, indium or a graphite sheet (for example, EYGS091210 (90 x 115 mm) Panasonic) is placed. On the outer side of the housing bottom, an additional thermal interface 31 is placed, made of a material with a high thermal conductivity coefficient, for example, KPT8 organosilicon thermal conductive paste GOST 19783-74 or indium.

[0031] Fiber-coupled laser diode pump module works as follows.

[0032] During operation, the laser diode module is installed in the standard location of the equipment (for example, on the heat-dissipating surface of the fiber laser radiator 32). When power is supplied from the electrical terminals, the laser diodes 81-8 n generate laser radiation that has an asymmetric shape along the fast and slow axes. To transform the radiation along the fast axis, a corresponding cylindrical microlens 91-9 is used for each laser diode. n . On the slow axis, the radiation of each laser diode is collimated by a corresponding cylindrical lens 101-10 n . Then the collimated radiation of each diode is reflected from the corresponding flat mirror 111-11 nat an angle of 90° in the horizontal plane. Thus, the beams of rays after reflection are aligned in the vertical plane strictly one above another and directed towards the receiving end of the fiber section 16 parallel to its axis. The combined radiation passes through a dichroic filter 12, which reflects the backward radiation, and is focused onto the end of the fiber section 16 using two cylindrical lenses 13, 14. The open slot 26 of the housing 1 eliminates deformation of the housing when installing the laser module on the radiator of the fiber optic laser and ensures stability against displacement of the optical fiber. The placement of the open slot 26 and holes 27 in the housing 1 made it possible to avoid deformation of the housing when mounting the laser module on the radiator 32 of the fiber optic laser and, as a result, misalignment of the optical circuit. The diagonal placement of holes 27 relative to stepped base 2 ensures the required thermal contact with heat-dissipating surface 32 of the equipment's standard location (e.g., a fiber laser heatsink). Thermal interfaces 30 and 31 ensure high thermal conductivity between the structural elements involved in heat exchange. This ensures efficient heat dissipation from laser diodes 81-8. n , heating up during operation, to the heat-conducting surface of the radiator 32.

[0033] The method for manufacturing a laser module includes manufacturing a heat-conducting housing 1, a stepped base 2, a cover 25, installing them on a switching board 5 and installing electrical terminals 4 into the openings of the housing 1, for example, by soldering; connecting insulators 3 to the switching board 5, for example, by soldering, with additional electrical terminals 6 and 7. The base is made of a heat-conducting material, and solder is applied to the upper surface of the base in the form of thin-film metallization. The thin-film metallization of the heat-conducting base is formed by thermal evaporation of indium in a vacuum chamber. Laser diodes 81-8 are sequentially installed and aligned. n On a heat-sink base, after which all laser diodes are simultaneously and in a single operation secured to the heat-sink base. The laser diodes are secured and assembled by soldering in a vapor-gas reducing atmosphere. Insulators 3 are then installed with adhesive. Microlenses 91-9n The elements are adjusted to ensure a collimated radiation beam along the fast axis, and then secured to the end surface of the laser diode heat sinks. The optical elements are mounted on base 2 sequentially. Cylindrical lenses 101-10 n placed in an orthogonal plane relative to the microlenses 91-9 n at such a distance from the laser diodes that the radiation is converted into a collimated beam in the plane of the laser diode axis, cylindrical lenses 101-10 are fixed n to the base 2; 2 flat mirrors 111-11 are placed on the base n, the reflective surface of which is positioned at a 45° angle relative to the laser diodes; the mirrors are fixed to the surface of base 2. After mounting the optical elements, base 2 is installed in housing 1. A thermal interface 30 made of a material with a high thermal conductivity coefficient (e.g., indium or a graphite sheet) is installed between base 2 and housing 1. Base 2 is positioned using pins and securely fixed to the housing using a screw connection.

[0034] The fiber is attached as follows.

[0035] Section 16 of the fiber without a protective polymer coating is placed in the through hole 17. Focusing lenses 13, 14 are mounted in two orthogonal planes at different heights on platforms formed in the bottom of the housing 1. The focusing lenses 13, 14 and section 16 of the fiber are adjusted using a variable process diaphragm (not shown in the figure) until the maximum radiation power introduced into the fiber core is achieved. After the adjustment, focusing lenses 13, 14 are fixed with glue. Then, the fiber is fixed in the housing 1 simultaneously, while a transparent UV-curable polymer composition with a refractive index equal to or greater than the refractive index of the fiber cladding is poured into the groove 19. The radiation propagating along the cladding hits the glue, spreads along it and is absorbed by the heat-dissipating housing 1.

[0036] The base is positioned in such a way that the decrease in the height of the steps is located towards the focusing lenses 13, 14.

[0037] Then, on the bottom of the housing between the base 2 and the focusing lenses 13 and 14, a dichroic filter 12 is installed with glue at an angle of 11° to 13° to the optical axis.

[0038] The connector 20 is adhesively attached to the housing 1. The fiber inside the connector is encased in a protective polymer coating 28, which can absorb radiation propagating along the fiber's cladding, but not radiated within the housing 1. This radiation is radiated to the surface of the metal connector as follows. A UV-curable polymer composition with a refractive index equal to or greater than that of the fiber's protective cladding is poured into the groove 21 of the connector 20. This creates an adhesive capillary around the fiber, almost the entire surface of which is within the connector. The radiation propagating along the fiber's protective cladding is radiated to the surface of the connector as thermal energy. Then, a protective tube 23 is placed on the fiber and fixed inside the fitting with adhesive poured into the groove 22 of the fitting 20. A protective heat-shrinkable tube 24 is placed on top of the fitting.

[0039] After the laser module is assembled, protective cover 25 is glued into the housing. The completed module is filled with ultra-pure, chemically inert gas with a dew point corresponding to a temperature below the laser module's operating temperature. The structure is then sealed. When installing the module in its designated location on the equipment, an additional thermal interface 31 made of a high-thermal-conductivity material (e.g., KPT8 thermal-conductive organosilicon paste, GOST 19783-74, or indium) is installed on the outer surface of the housing bottom on the heat-dissipating surface of heat sink 32 (e.g., a fiber laser heat sink).

[0040] Thanks to the application of the above technical solutions, a device was obtained that allows for the effective transfer of radiation propagating through the shell to the heat-conducting body of the housing, which ensures the stability of the radiation output power and the reliability of the module’s operation as intended over a wide range of operating ambient temperatures.

[0041] Thus, the information provided indicates that the following set of conditions are met when using the claimed group of inventions:

[0042] - a process that embodies the claimed method when implemented is intended for the manufacture of the claimed device, which is intended for use as a pump module for high-power fiber optic lasers, as well as medical lasers;

[0044] Consequently, the claimed group of inventions meets the condition of “industrial applicability”.
