Abstract
Description
[0001] The present invention relates to an oral nicotine product and a method for producing such an oral nicotine product.
[0002] Smokeless oral tobacco products, such as snus and snuff, are well known in the industry and have provided an oral alternative to traditional smoking products for many years. More recently, a new class of "modern" nicotine products has emerged that provide a nicotine source that typically does not contain tobacco. Oral nicotine products provide a nicotine source that is an alternative to e-cigarettes and aerosol-generating devices, which deliver nicotine converted into an aerosol by heating the nicotine source. One of the most common types of nicotine products is the tobacco-free nicotine pouch, which contains a powdered nicotine composition inside a small, sealed pouch. During use, nicotine pouches are placed between the user's lip and gums, allowing nicotine to be delivered through the mucous membranes of the mouth.Document EP 1 617 823 A describes an oral product in the form of a pouch containing a composite material comprising a biologically active agent, such as nicotine, ionically bound to an ionic carbohydrate. The pouch is designed to provide rapid transmucosal delivery of nicotine to the user's mouth.
[0003] Oral nicotine products in the form of lozenges, chewable tablets, and chewing gum are also known. For example, WO 2017 / 182084 A describes an oral dosage form containing nicotine-loaded particles of a cation exchange resin, wherein said dosage form can be chewing gum, a tablet, or a lozenge.
[0004] In general, oral nicotine products are not intended to be swallowed but are retained in the mouth for a period of time while nicotine is released. Therefore, after use, the user must remove and discard any remaining product from their mouth. Some users may find this post-use handling of an oral nicotine product unpleasant or inconvenient, particularly when the used product cannot be immediately discarded. Additionally, concerns may arise regarding the inconvenience or lack of hygiene associated with handling oral nicotine products before use, during removal from packaging, and when inserting the product into the user's mouth.
[0005] Accordingly, it would be desirable to offer an alternative form of oral nicotine product that can be consumed in a manner different from existing products, thereby providing a new user experience. For example, it would be particularly desirable to offer an oral nicotine product that can be used with less finger contact, potentially improving hygiene and convenience. It would also be desirable to offer a product that provides consumers with some flexibility regarding the method of consumption. It would also be desirable to offer a product that can be efficiently produced in large-scale manufacturing processes.
[0006] The present invention relates to an oral nicotine product formed from a nicotine composition. The nicotine composition may comprise a matrix based on water-soluble fibers. The nicotine composition may further comprise a gum-based binder. The nicotine composition may further comprise a nicotine source distributed in the matrix based on water-soluble fibers. The oral nicotine product may be formed as a hollow tube defining a central longitudinal channel extending between the ends of the hollow tube. The central longitudinal channel may have a diameter of at least 4 millimeters.
[0007] According to the present invention, an oral nicotine product is provided, formed from a nicotine composition containing a matrix based on water-soluble fibers, a gum-based binder and a nicotine source distributed in a matrix based on water-soluble fibers, wherein said oral nicotine product is made in the form of a hollow tube defining a central longitudinal channel passing between the ends of the hollow tube and having a diameter of at least 4 millimeters.
[0008] The present invention also relates to a method for manufacturing an oral nicotine product. The method may include the step of forming a mixture containing soluble fiber, a nicotine source, and a gum-based binder. The method may further include the step of heating the mixture to a temperature of less than 100 degrees Celsius. The method may further include the step of pouring the mixture into a tubular mold. The method may further include the step of cooling the mixture in the tubular mold to solidify the mixture into a hollow tube. The method may further include the step of removing the solidified hollow tube from the mold.
[0009] According to the present invention, there is provided a method for manufacturing an oral nicotine product according to any of the preceding paragraphs, comprising the steps of: forming a mixture containing soluble fiber, a nicotine source and a gum-based binder; heating the mixture to a temperature of less than 100 degrees Celsius; pouring the mixture into a tubular mold; cooling the mixture in the tubular mold to solidify the mixture in the shape of a hollow tube; and removing the solidified hollow tube from the mold.
[0010] Thus, the present invention provides an oral nicotine product having a novel, hollow tubular shape. The hollow tubular shape allows the oral nicotine product to be mounted and held on a pen-like object during consumption, rather than being inserted directly into the user's mouth. For example, oral nicotine products according to the present invention can be suitably mounted on the end of a common object, such as a straw, pencil, pen, or chopstick. The user can then suck, chew, or lick the oral nicotine product to deliver nicotine to their mouth.
[0011] This new method of consuming an oral nicotine product according to the present invention reduces contact between the oral nicotine product and the user's fingers. This, in turn, minimizes the risk of contamination of both the product itself and the user's hands. Once placed on the selected "handle," the product can be consumed intermittently and conveniently, giving the user complete control over the timing and duration of consumption. This provides the user with greater flexibility in using the product.
[0012] As described below, some embodiments of the invention provide oral nicotine products that can be held on the user's fingertip. This allows for some level of transdermal delivery in addition to orally delivered nicotine, thereby optimizing overall nicotine delivery to the user. Such embodiments also provide the user with increased flexibility regarding the method of nicotine delivery.
[0013] The oral nicotine products according to the present invention can be easily manufactured using known molding techniques.
[0014] As defined above, the oral nicotine products according to the present invention have the form of a hollow tube. Preferably, the hollow tube has a cylindrical shape. Preferably, the outer cross-section of the hollow tube is substantially circular.
[0015] Preferably, the outer diameter of the hollow tube is at least about 7 millimeters, more preferably at least about 8 millimeters, and more preferably at least about 10 millimeters.
[0016] Preferably, the outer diameter of the hollow tube is less than about 25 millimeters, more preferably less than about 15 millimeters, and more preferably less than about 12 millimeters. For example, the hollow tube may have an outer diameter of from about 7 millimeters to about 25 millimeters, or from about 8 millimeters to about 15 millimeters, or from about 10 millimeters to about 12 millimeters.
[0017] The hollow tube creates a central longitudinal channel defining an opening that extends through the entire hollow tube between its two ends, allowing oral nicotine products to be applied to a pen-like object, such as a straw or finger. The central longitudinal channel has a diameter of at least approximately 4 millimeters. The diameter is measured transversely to the longitudinal direction of the channel and corresponds to the "inner diameter" of the hollow tube. In cases where the cross-sectional shape of the longitudinal channel is non-circular, causing the diameter of the longitudinal channel to vary depending on the angle of measurement, the minimum diameter is at least approximately 4 millimeters. This means that regardless of where the diameter is measured, it will always be at least approximately 4 millimeters.Designing the longitudinal channel so that it has a diameter of 4 millimeters or more allows for the effective retention of the nicotine product on a wider range of different pen-type objects such as straws, pencils, etc.
[0018] Preferably, the diameter of the longitudinal channel of the hollow tube is at least about 5 millimeters, more preferably at least about 6 millimeters.
[0019] The diameter of the longitudinal channel of the hollow tube is preferably less than about 20 millimeters, more preferably less than about 15 millimeters, and more preferably less than about 10 millimeters. For example, the longitudinal channel can have a diameter of from about 4 millimeters to about 20 millimeters, or from about 5 millimeters to about 15 millimeters, or from about 6 millimeters to about 10 millimeters.
[0020] The longitudinal channel of the hollow tube may have any suitable cross-sectional shape. Preferably, the longitudinal channel has a substantially circular cross-sectional shape. This facilitates the application of the oral nicotine product to a "round" object such as a pen, such as a straw, pencil, or finger. The longitudinal channel preferably has a substantially constant cross-section along its entire length.
[0021] In some preferred embodiments, the longitudinal channel is specifically configured to accommodate a drinking straw, allowing said oral nicotine product to be held on the end of the straw during use. In other preferred embodiments, the longitudinal channel is specifically configured to accommodate a user's fingertip, allowing said oral nicotine product to be held on the finger during use.
[0022] The hollow tube preferably has a wall thickness of at least about 2 millimeters, more preferably at least about 3 millimeters.
[0023] The hollow tube preferably has a length of at least about 8 millimeters, more preferably at least about 10 millimeters, and more preferably at least about 15 millimeters.
[0024] Preferably, the hollow tube has a length of at least about 30 millimeters, more preferably less than about 25 millimeters, and more preferably less than about 20 millimeters. For example, the length of the hollow tube can be from about 8 millimeters to about 30 millimeters, or from about 10 millimeters to about 25 millimeters, or from about 15 millimeters to about 20 millimeters.
[0025] Preferably, the hollow tube exhibits elastic deformation properties under a force of approximately 10 Newtons. This means that the hollow tube can be compressed under an applied force of up to 10 Newtons and will essentially return to its original shape after the force is removed. This elastic property of the hollow tube allows for manipulation to facilitate insertion of the oral nicotine product into the appropriate pen.
[0026] The nicotine composition forming the hollow tube, which will be described in more detail below, preferably has an elastic modulus of from about 1200 MPa to about 3800 MPa, more preferably from about 2100 MPa to about 3200 MPa.
[0027] In some embodiments of the present invention, the hollow tube may exhibit plastic deformation properties when subjected to forces of 12 Newtons or greater. This means that when the tube is compressed with a force of 12 Newtons or greater, it will remain in the compressed shape rather than returning to its original shape. This allows the oral nicotine product to be given a flatter shape, similar to that of a traditional nicotine pouch. The compressed pouch can be conveniently inserted into the mouth in a manner similar to inserting a nicotine pouch, as an alternative to mounting the oral nicotine product on an elongated object. This provides the consumer with greater flexibility regarding the method of consuming the oral nicotine product.
[0028] In some embodiments of the invention, the inner surface of the hollow tube, corresponding to the surface of the longitudinal channel, may be smooth or flat. In alternative embodiments of the invention, the inner surface of the hollow tube may be designed to improve adhesion between the hollow tube and the outer surface of the "pen" on which the oral nicotine product is mounted. This may provide the advantage of more effectively holding the oral nicotine product in place.
[0029] Preferably, the inner surface of the hollow tube comprises a plurality of grooves or channels to provide improved grip. For example, the inner surface of the hollow tube may comprise a plurality of longitudinal grooves extending between opposite ends of the hollow tube. Alternatively, the inner surface of the hollow tube may comprise a plurality of axial grooves extending axially around the inner surface. In embodiments in which multiple grooves are provided, the inner diameter of the hollow tube should be measured between the grooves, such that the inner diameter does not include the depth of the grooves.
[0030] Preferably, the grooves have a depth of at least about 1 millimeter, more preferably at least about 1.5 millimeters. Preferably, the grooves have a depth of no more than about 3 millimeters, more preferably no more than about 2 millimeters. For example, the grooves can have a depth of from about 1 millimeter to about 3 millimeters, or from about 1 millimeter to about 2 millimeters, or from about 1.5 millimeters to about 3 millimeters, or from about 1.5 millimeters to about 2 millimeters.
[0031] As defined above, the hollow tube of oral nicotine products according to the present invention is formed from a nicotine composition comprising a matrix based on water-soluble fibers and a nicotine source distributed in the matrix based on water-soluble fibers.
[0032] The fiber matrix can be made of any suitable fibrous material capable of forming a matrix structure to retain nicotine in the nicotine composition. Accordingly, the fibrous material creates a structure containing a network of internal pores or channels that can contain a nicotine source. The fibrous material is water-soluble, allowing it to gradually dissolve upon contact of the oral product with saliva within the consumer's mouth. Accordingly, the fiber matrix must be water-soluble under the conditions typically found within the consumer's mouth.
[0033] Preferably, the water-soluble fiber matrix comprises cellulose fibers. For example, the water-soluble fiber matrix may comprise cellulose fibers derived from wood pulp, cotton, sugar beet, bran, citrus pulp, millet, willow, tea, poplar, plantain, arabinoxylan, or any combination thereof. Alternatively, or additionally, the water-soluble matrix may comprise one or more polysaccharides, such as maltodextrin, inulin, starch, pectin, or beta-glucans. Other suitable fibrous materials include oligosaccharides and lignin.
[0034] Preferably, the nicotine composition comprises at least about 20 percent by weight of a water-soluble fiber matrix, more preferably at least about 30 percent by weight on a dry weight basis.
[0035] Preferably, the nicotine composition comprises no more than about 60 percent by weight of a water-soluble fiber matrix, more preferably no more than about 50 percent by weight on a dry weight basis. For example, the nicotine composition may comprise from about 20 percent by weight to about 60 percent by weight of a water-soluble fiber matrix, or from about 30 percent by weight to about 50 percent by weight on a dry weight basis.

Preferably, the nicotine source comprises nicotine lactate or nicotine benzoate.
[0037] Alternatively, the nicotine source may comprise liquid nicotine, nicotine gel, stabilized nicotine, or nicotine in base form.
[0038] Preferably, the nicotine composition comprises at least about 0.5 percent by weight of a nicotine source, more preferably at least about 1 percent by weight, more preferably at least about 1.5 percent by weight on a dry weight basis.
[0039] Preferably, the nicotine composition contains no more than about 10 percent by weight of a nicotine source, more preferably no more than about 8 percent by weight, more preferably no more than about 6 percent by weight, based on dry weight. For example, the nicotine composition may contain from about 0.5 percent by weight to about 10 percent by weight of a nicotine source, or from about 1 percent by weight to about 8 percent by weight, or from about 1.5 percent by weight to about 6 percent by weight, based on dry weight.
[0040] Preferably, each individual oral nicotine product contains from about 1 mg to about 11 mg of nicotine. The amount of nicotine in the product can be varied depending on the desired strength. [0060] The intended use of the oral nicotine products according to the present invention will be described below. As discussed above, the oral nicotine products according to the present invention are formed in the form of a hollow tube, allowing them to be easily mounted on a suitable "handle" and held there during use. The appropriate choice of "handle" will depend on the size of the oral nicotine product and, in particular, the diameter of the longitudinal bore, but suitable examples may include a straw, pencil, pen, or chopstick. Alternatively, the "handle" may be shaped like the user's finger.
[0061] During use, the user inserts a selected "handle" of a suitable size into the longitudinal channel of the hollow tube. The term "handle" is used herein to refer to any suitable elongated object with proportions suitable for mounting and retaining an oral nicotine product. Preferably, the outer diameter of the handle substantially matches the inner diameter of the hollow tube, ensuring that the hollow tube is held in place during use by friction between the inner surface of the hollow tube and the outer surface of the handle. Once mounted on the handle, the user can insert the oral nicotine product into their mouth for the desired duration. Any coating present will dissolve upon initial contact with saliva in the user's mouth. The water-soluble fiber matrix then begins to dissolve and loses its integrity, releasing the nicotine source and any other components that may be present, such as flavorings, into the consumer's mouth.
[0062] The oral nicotine product can be consumed entirely in one go or in several separate periods. This provides the consumer with greater flexibility in choosing the timing and duration of product consumption.
[0063] If an oral nicotine product is applied to the user's finger, this allows for some additional transdermal nicotine delivery after the integrity of the water-soluble matrix begins to be compromised by inserting the oral nicotine product into the user's mouth. In this case, both oral and transdermal nicotine delivery through the skin are possible.
[0064] The oral nicotine products according to the present invention can be manufactured using any suitable methods and apparatus. Preferably, the oral nicotine products are formed using a molding process to achieve the desired hollow tubular shape. Extrusion or injection molding processes are also suitable for producing the tubular structure.
[0065] The present invention also provides a method for producing oral nicotine products according to the invention, as defined above. In the first step of this method, a mixture containing soluble fiber and a nicotine source is formed. Typically, the mixture will be in the form of a solution containing water. During this step, any other optional components required for the oral nicotine product can be added to the mixture. The resulting mixture is then heated to a temperature of less than 100 degrees Celsius. Preferably, this heating step is carried out at a temperature of from about 45 degrees Celsius to about 75 degrees Celsius, more preferably from about 50 degrees Celsius to about 60 degrees Celsius, with the temperature selected to achieve the desired viscosity of the mixture.
[0066] The heated mixture is then poured or pressurized into a tubular mold. Suitable molding equipment for this step is known to those skilled in the art, but includes a starch molding machine, which is commonly used for molding confectionery products. In such methods, a cornstarch layer is created and a mold-forming device is used to extrude the desired shape (in this case, tubular) into the cornstarch layer. After curing the products, as described below, the starch can be removed and reused. This type of process is described in document EP 2645885 A.
[0067] The mixture inside the tubular mold is cooled to harden into a hollow tube. This can take up to 15-25 hours. During the curing process, the soluble fibers form a water-soluble matrix around the nicotine source.
[0068] At the end, the cured hollow tube can be removed from the mold and packaged as desired.

[0123] Specific embodiments will now be described by way of example only with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which:
[0124] Fig. 1 is a perspective view of a first embodiment of an oral nicotine product according to the present invention;
[0125] Fig. 2 is a perspective view of a second embodiment of an oral nicotine product according to the present invention;
[0126] Fig. 3 is an end view of the oral nicotine product shown in Fig. 2;
[0127] Fig. 4 is a schematic representation of the oral nicotine product shown in Figs. 2 and 3 placed on a drinking straw; and
[0128] Fig. 5 - the oral nicotine product shown in Figs. 1 and 2, in compressed form.
[0129] The oral nicotine product shown in Fig. 1 has the shape of a cylindrical hollow tube 10, which has a peripheral wall 12 formed from a nicotine composition, and a central longitudinal channel 14 extending between the opposite ends of the hollow tube 10. The longitudinal channel 14 has a circular cross-section, and the surface of the central longitudinal channel is flat. The diameter of the central longitudinal channel 14, which corresponds to the transverse inner diameter of the hollow tube 10, is 8 millimeters. The outer diameter of the hollow tube 10 is 12 millimeters, and thus the peripheral wall 12 has a thickness of 2 millimeters. The hollow tube 10 has a length of 18 millimeters. The hollow tube 10 is suitable for installation on a pen-type object, such as a writing pen, a pencil, or a straw.
[0130] The hollow tube 10 is formed from a nicotine composition comprising a matrix based on water-soluble cellulose fibers, a nicotine salt, a binder based on natural gum, and a flavoring agent. A soluble beeswax coating layer (not shown) is provided on the outer surface of the hollow tube 10 to form a barrier layer.
[0131] Figures 2 and 3 show an oral nicotine product according to a second embodiment of the present invention in the form of a hollow tube 20 comprising a peripheral wall 22 and a central longitudinal channel 24 between opposite ends of the hollow tube 20. The hollow tube 20 is formed from a nicotine composition that is similar to the composition forming the hollow tube 10 shown in Figure 1, as described above. The longitudinal channel 24 has a circular cross-section, but unlike the hollow tube 10, the inner surface of the longitudinal channel 24 contains a plurality of longitudinal grooves 26 located at a distance from each other around the circumference of the longitudinal channel 24, which provide an adhesion surface. Each longitudinal groove 26 extends between the ends of the hollow tube 24 and has a substantially rectangular cross-section with a transverse depth of 1.5 millimeters. The outer diameter (D внеш) of the hollow tube 20 is 12 millimeters, and the diameter of the longitudinal channel corresponding to the internal diameter of the hollow tube (D внутр ), is 9 millimeters. As shown in Fig. 3, the inner diameter of the hollow tube (D внутр ) is measured in a position outside the longitudinal grooves 26 and, accordingly, does not include the depth of the longitudinal grooves 26. Accordingly, the value D внутр represents the minimum internal diameter of a hollow tube. Hollow tube 20 is 18 millimeters long and is suitable for mounting on a pen-type object such as a pen, chopstick, or straw.
[0132] Figure 4 shows the hollow tube 20 shown in Figures 2 and 3 mounted on the end of a drinking straw 30, ready for use. The grooved inner surface of the hollow tube 20 grips the outer surface of the straw 30, ensuring that the hollow tube is held in place on the straw during use without slipping. Accordingly, during use, the consumer does not need to touch the hollow tube 20 at all; instead, he or she can simply insert it into his or her mouth by moving the straw 30.
[0133] The hollow tube 20 has a certain degree of elasticity, due to which it can be elastically deformed to some extent under the action of compression applied by the consumer, in order to install it on the desired “handle” for consumption.
[0134] If desired, the hollow tube 20 can be compressed by the user with a greater compressive force to ensure a permanent, flatter shape, as shown in Fig. 5, which more closely resembles the shape of a nicotine pouch. The level of compressive force that the user should apply in the direction shown in Fig. 5 is greater than 12 Newtons. In this flattened shape, the hollow tube 20 can be inserted into the mouth and held between the gum and lip to release nicotine.
