[0001] A LIQUID TRANSPARENT COMPOSITION FOR MAKE-UP REMOVAL

[0002] Field of the Invention

[0003] The present invention relates to a skin cleaning composition, more particularly a composition for cleaning the face that is especially useful and effective in removal of make-up. The composition is delivered in the form of a bilayer composition: an oily layer on top of an aqueous layer, both of which are transparent. The composition forms a micellar translucent or hazy liquid when shaken and reverts to the bilayer composition with time.

[0004] Background of the Invention

[0005] People like to use cosmetic products especially on their face and other exposed parts of the body for various benefits e.g. providing even skin tone, smoothening age related fine wrinkles, providing brightness effect, getting sunscreen benefits etc. Further, makeup products like lipstick, foundations, mascara etc are applied for beautifying the face, to the individuals personal desires. Such products contain a variety of ingredients which may be particulate e.g. pigments, inorganic particles, powders and sunblock; oily ingredients like organic sunscreens, emollients, solvents; water soluble ingredients like humectants, polymers, and other skin care actives like vitamins, antiaging actives etc. Such leave-on cosmetic and make up products are so formulated that they are meant to have high substantivity on the skin. Such products are claimed to retain their efficacy on the skin and be stable over long periods of use e.g up to 8 to 12 hours and not smudge, smear or run when the person perspires or is exposed to changing external conditions like sunlight, pollution, and dry ambient conditions like a heated or air-conditioned room. While on the one hand such products have to be highly substantive on the skin, on the other hand it is necessary that the consumer has to have a simple, safe and mild wash off make-up removal product that can be used to easily remove the leave-on cosmetic I make -up products without the need for too much mechanical abrasion.

[0006] The most commonly used skin cleansing product is one which contains a combination of synthetic surfactant and soap (often called a soap-syndet composition) for emulsifying the oil and particulates to deliver the desired cleansing benefit. However, such compositions are often found wanting when it comes to efficiency in removal of make up on the face. Micellar liquids where a small amount oil is emulsified at micellar levels in the composition are also often used for makeup removal. Such compositions are hazy and not very appealing to the consumer. Further, the present inventors have found that there is scope for further improvement in make-up removal efficacy. The present inventors wanted to deliver the product in a format which is attractive to the consumer e.g a bilayer composition. After extensive experimentation with large number of emulsifiers for delivering the product in a bilayer form, they hit upon the present invention involving use of a specific surfactant which is capable of forming a highly transparent bilayer composition and which forms a micellar liquid on shaking while reverting to the transparent bilayer form with time. The inventive composition was found to be much better in make-up removal as compared to similar products available in the market and as compared to traditional micellar liquids used for this purpose.

[0007] It is thus an object of the present invention to provide for a face cleaning composition that is highly effective in make-up removal.

[0008] It is yet another object of the present invention to provide for a highly efficient make-up removing face wash composition that is in the form of an attractive transparent bilayer configuration.

[0009] It is yet another object of the present invention that is formulated to have high make-up removal, is in the form of a bilayer composition which forms a micellar liquid on shaking but reverts to the bilayer form with time.

[0010] Summary of the Invention

[0011] The present invention provides for a liquid transparent composition for make-up removal comprising

[0012] (i) 10 to 45 wt% an oily layer; and

[0013] (ii) 55 to 90 wt% an aqueous layer;

[0014] Wherein said aqueous layer comprises

[0015] (a) 0.1 to 10% humectant by weight of the composition; and

[0016] (b) 0.01 to 1.2% cetyl pyridinium halide by weight of the composition.

[0017] Detailed Description of the Invention

[0018] These and other aspects, features and advantages will become apparent to those of ordinary skill in the art from a reading of the following detailed description and the appended claims. For the avoidance of doubt, any feature of one aspect of the present invention may be utilised in any other aspect of the invention. The word "comprising" is intended to mean "including" but not necessarily "consisting of" or "composed of." In other words, the listed steps or options need not be exhaustive. It is noted that the examples given in the description below are intended to clarify the invention and are not intended to limit the invention to those examples per se. Similarly, all percentages are weight / weight percentages unless otherwise indicated. Except in the operating and comparative examples, or where otherwise explicitly indicated, all numbers in this description and claims indicating amounts of material or conditions of reaction, physical properties of materials and / or use are to be understood as modified by the word "about". Numerical ranges expressed in the format "from x to y" are understood to include x and y. When for a specific feature multiple preferred ranges are described in the format "from x to y", it is understood that all ranges combining the different endpoints are also contemplated.

[0019] The topical composition of the invention is meant to be used for personal care or for make-up removal use and could also be referred to as a personal care composition or a make-up removal composition. By a “make-up removal composition” as used herein, is meant to include a composition for topical application i.e external surfaces of the skin of humans. Such a composition is generally of the wash-off type, and includes any product used on the skin for improving appearance, cleansing, odour control or general aesthetics. The composition of the present invention is preferably a cleaning composition of the wash off type which comprises two layers and may be termed as a bilayer composition. The bilayer composition of the present invention comprises an oily layer on top of an aqueous layer. Both the layers are substantially transparent. By ‘transparent’ is meant that the transparency is in the range of 70 to 100% as measured using the following method.

[0020] The bilayer composition in the container is shaken in an up and down motion for 10 times and then kept idle for 24 hours. The transmittance of the aqueous layer and the oily layer was then measured. This was done by taking 2 ml of the desired layer in a 10 mm quartz cell and the transmittance measured at 420 nm using a UV-Vis spectrophotometer against distilled water as the control sample. It was observed that for compositions of the invention, the oily layer had a transparency value in the range of 80 to 100% and the aqueous layer had a transparency value in the range of 70 to 100% of that of the control sample.

[0021] "Skin" as used herein is meant to include skin on the face and parts of the body (e.g. neck, arms, hands, legs and scalp) which are the exposed parts where one generally tends to apply leave-on cosmetic compositions especially make-up compositions.

[0022] The composition of the invention is of the cleaning type that is of the so-called wash-off or rinse- off format. The composition is generally applied on the topical surface e.g. the face and then either wiped off with a wipe, tissue or cloth or is rinsed off with copious amounts of water after a few minutes.

[0023] The composition of the invention comprises two layers both of which are transparent. An oily layer at the top below which is an aqueous layer. The oily layer comprises 10 to 45%, preferably 25 to 35% of the total weight of the composition.

[0024] The aqueous layer comprises 55 to 90%, preferably 65 to 75% of the total weight of the composition. The aqueous layer comprises a surfactant viz. cetyl pyridinium halide which is very selective in order to get the benefits of the invention. The present inventors experimented with large number of surfactants at various concentrations in order to meet the dual requirement of the invention viz. ensuring that the aqueous layer is transparent while obtaining a micellar liquid when the oily layer and the aqueous layer are mixed to form a single phase liquid. It is also necessary that the two layers are again formed once the micellar liquid is set to rest for a period of time. Surfactants of various types e.g. caprylyl / capryl glucoside, decyl glucoside, PPG 9, Tween 80, diethylhexyl sodium sulfosuccinate to name a few were tried but none of them delivered the desired behaviour except cetyl pyridinium halide. With the surfactants that did not work, either a micellar composition could not be obtained on shaking or they did not revert to the original clear and transparent oily and aqueous layer. The cetyl pyridinium halide could be chloride or bromide, preferably chloride. The aqueous layer comprises 0.01 to 2.5%, preferably 0.01 to 0.8% cetyl pyridinium halide by weight of the composition.

[0025] The aqueous layer also comprises a humectant which is preferably a polyhydric alcohol. Suitable polyhydric alcohols for use in the composition of the invention are glycerol, 1 ,3-butylene glycol, propylene glycol, 1 ,3 propanediol, pentylene glycol, hexylene glycol, and sorbitol. Glycerol and pentylene glycol are further more preferred humectant, most preferred being glycerol. The aqueous layer comprises 0.1 to 10%, preferably 0.1 to 7% humectant by weight of the composition.

[0026] The aqueous layer may also comprise certain skin care actives. The actives, when included, are selected from one or more of niacinamide, allantoin, Vitamin C, Vitamin B5, Vitamin K and sodium hyaluronate; preferably the actives are selected from one or more of niacinamide, allantoin and sodium hyaluronate. The skin care actives are preferably included in total amount of 0.01 to 0.5%, preferably in 0.05 to 0.2% by weight of the composition.

[0027] Water is preferably included in amount of 45 to 80%, preferably 65 to 75% by weight of the composition.

[0028] The composition of the invention includes an oily layer which is present in 10 to 45%, preferably 25 to 35% by weight of the composition. Oils which may be used to make up the oily layer are selected from one or more of silicones, C to C branched or straight chain alkanes and Cw to Cis fatty esters. Silicones when included may comprise 15 to 25% by weight of the composition. C to Cis alkanes when included are preferably branched. A useful alkane is isohexadecane. Alkanes, when used are preferably included in 1 to 8% by weight of the composition. Suitable oils which are C10 to C18 fatty ester are isopropyl myristate or isopropyl palmitate preferably isopropyl myristate. Fatty esters, when used, are preferably included in 0.1 to 5% by weight of the composition.

[0029] The composition of the invention is so configured that the density of the oily layer is lower than the density of the aqueous layer such that the oily layer is above the aqueous layer. The composition is so formulated as a bilayer composition that on shaking the composition the two layers mix into a transient micellar single translucent to hazy phase. The single phase then reverts to the original transparent bilayer composition on standing for a certain period of time, preferably from 10 min to 24 hours, preferably from 15 min to 20 hours, preferably from 30 min to 16 hours, preferably from 1 hour to 12 hours, preferably from 2 hours to 8 hours, preferably from 3 hours to 4 hours.

[0030] The composition of the invention may include a colouring agent. The colouring agent is preferably soluble in the layer in which it is included. Thus the colouring agent included in the aqueous layer is preferably soluble in the aqueous layer. The colouring agent included in the oily layer is preferably soluble in the oily layer. The colouring agent may be included in both the layers but it is preferred that it is included only in one of the layers to deliver a visible contrast between the two layers. The colouring agent is preferably included in the oily layer. The colouring agent, when included is present in 0.00001 to 0.0001% by weight of the composition.

Claims

DEPCT6928 / 11 / 25681. Transparent liquid makeup remover formulations containing (i) an oily layer of 10 to 45% by weight; and (ii) an aqueous layer of 55 to 90% by weight; in which the aqueous layer contains (a) a humectant of 0.1 to 7% by weight of the composition; and (b) cetylpyridinium halide of 0.01 to 0.8% by weight of the composition, in which the humectant contains one or more of the following in a polyhydric alcohol.

1. A composition as claimed in claim 1 in which the humectant consists of one or more polyhydric alcohols selected from glycerol, 1,3-butylene glycol, propylene glycol, 1,3-propanediol, pentylene glycol, hexylene glycol and mixtures thereof.

2. A composition as claimed in claim 1 in which the humectant consists of one or more polyhydric alcohols selected from glycerol, pentylene glycol and mixtures thereof.

3. A composition as claimed in claim 1 in which cetylpyridinium halide is cetylpyridinium chloride. 4.

5. A composition as claimed in any of the prior claims in which the aqueous layer is composed of one or more selected skin care active ingredients from niacinamide, allantoin, vitamin C, vitamin B5, vitamin K, and sodium hyaluronate; 6. A composition as claimed in any of the prior claims in which the water content is 45 to 80% by weight of the composition; 7. A composition as claimed in any of the prior claims in which the oil layer is composed of one or more selected oils from silicone, C10 to C18 branched or straight-chain alkanes, and C10 to C18 fatty esters; 8. A composition as claimed in any of the prior claims in which the density of the oil layer is lower than the density of the aqueous layer in such a way that the oil layer is above the aqueous layer; 9. A composition as claimed in any of the prior claims which is mixed as a single translucent to opaque phase that is a temporary micelle when shaken and reverts to its original transparent two-phase composition.
