Abstract
The invention relates to a system for damping high kinetic energy hydraulic shock waves (water hammers) caused by sudden valve closures or pump shutdowns, particularly in aerospace propulsion systems, rocket fuel supply lines, and cryogenic fluid installations. The invention incorporates a metal bellows inlet flap (8) mechanism located at the inlet of the main outer casing (1), which can autonomously move axially according to the static and dynamic pressure regime of the incoming fluid. Under normal operating conditions, the system allows the fluid to be bypassed through the side openings (7) on the perimeter line without any hydraulic resistance or friction loss; however, in the event of a sudden shock, the inlet flap (8) collapses backward, closing the bypass line and forcing the entire flow into the spiral flow channels (3) on the central axis. The outlets of the channels are structured in a symmetrical bidirectional form to spray tangentially to both the inner center (10) and the outer perimeter (11). Thus, the momentum of the shock wave is passively neutralized completely by the self-destructing hydraulic collision barrier and the cyclonic vortex field.
