Abstract
The invention relates to a biodegradable and edible smart food packaging system. The system incorporates a biopolymer matrix based on quince seed (Cydonia oblonga) mucilage and / or plant mucilage, which reacts to amine compounds formed during food spoilage through naturally occurring pH-sensitive components within the biopolymer matrix. This interaction results in color change, opacity change, swelling, shrinkage, and surface deformation of the packaging structure. The invention allows for the direct monitoring of food spoilage through the packaging structure without the need for external sensors, electronic circuits, or RFID systems. The system is biodegradable and edible. The entire packaging can function as an active spoilage indicator.
