Abstract

The invention relates to a fluid energy conversion system for converting the pressure, kinetic, and / or potential energy of a fluid into mechanical rotational energy and, if necessary, electrical energy, through controlled flow direction and successive energy conversion stages. The system comprises a conical flow shell, positioned within or functionally related to the outer shell, creating a cross-section that decreases in the direction of flow; a circumferential fluid inlet region; a tangentially flow-directed circumferential fluid inlet opening; a conical shell helical guiding element; and a helical flow channel. The fluid is directed through these structures to include axial and circumferential motion components, and then conveyed to the first turbine stage containing an upper helical turbine, and from there, through the inter-stage flow transition region, to the second turbine stage containing a cap turbine. The mechanical rotational motion generated in the upper helical turbine is transmitted to independent mechanical power paths via the central tube shaft, while the mechanical rotational motion generated in the cap turbine is transmitted via the outer tube shaft. These shafts are positioned within a coaxial multi-shaft group, nested on a common or essentially common axis of rotation. The fluid exiting the second turbine stage is redirected back to the inlet direction in a controlled manner via the return flow region and the outer helical guide element. The resulting mechanical rotational motions can be used directly as mechanical power output and / or converted into electrical energy via generators.
