Abstract

A near-eye display includes a lightguide optical element (LOE) with opposed major surfaces, an image projector, a first region having partially reflective surfaces, and a second region with an out-coupling arrangement. To suppress ghosts from single reflections at a facet or interface, an elongated light-deflecting structure is provided on the first major surface adjacent thereto. The structure is configured so that a reverse-traced unguided ray from an eye-motion box that would otherwise impinge the facet / interface is deflected so it does not impinge. A corrective light-deflecting structure on the second major surface may counter-deflect rays to reduce impact on the peripheral vision. The light-deflecting structures provide beam steering without optical power and may be implemented as prisms or as diffractive / metasurface or volume-holographic elements, formed as discrete strips or portions of a continuous film.
