Abstract

This invention provides a method for producing 1,1-dicyanoethylene in high yield of an ethyl 1,1-cyanoacetate composition containing 1,1-dicyanoethylene with suppressed coloring, while simultaneously suppressing polymer formation during the production of 1,1-dicyanoethylene. The ethyl 1,1-cyanoacetate composition comprises ethyl 1,1-cyanoacetate (A) as a main component and at least one compound selected from the group consisting of acetic acid (B1), acetylcyanide (B2), and α-cyanovinyl acetate (B3) as secondary components. The total concentration of components (B1) to (B3) relative to the mass of component (A) is 0.1 ppm to 30,000 ppm by mass, and the concentrations of acetic acid (B1), acetylcyanide (B2), and α-cyanovinyl acetate (B3) relative to the mass of component (A) are each 10,000 ppm by mass or less.
