Methods and related compositions for the synthesis and purification of pyromellitic dianhydride are provided. The method comprises obtaining a solid composition. The solid composition comprises at least one of a pyromellitic anhydride, a pyromellitic acid, or any combination thereof. The method comprises heating the solid composition at a temperature and a pressure sufficient to convert at least one of the pyromellitic anhydride, the pyromellitic acid, or a combination thereof to a reaction product.
