Abstract

This invention provides a liquid crystal alignment agent that can form a liquid crystal alignment film with excellent mechanical properties and obtain a liquid crystal element with excellent reliability while exhibiting good liquid crystal alignment and high voltage retention. A liquid crystal alignment agent contains a polymer (A), said polymer (A) being at least one selected from the group consisting of polyamide, polyamide ester, and polyimide, and obtained using two or more tetracarboxylic acid derivatives comprising a compound represented by formula (1), wherein said liquid crystal alignment agent satisfies at least one of requirements 1 and 2. Requirements 1: It also contains a polymer (B) different from polymer (A). Requirements 2: It contains two or more polymers (A). In formula (1), Y1 and Y2 are independently tetravalent organic groups. X1 is a divalent organic group.
