Abstract

A liquid crystal alignment agent is provided, exhibiting good contact hole coating properties, capable of obtaining a liquid crystal alignment film with excellent transparency, and possessing excellent process stability. The liquid crystal alignment agent comprises: a polymer (P) containing a side chain with a cinnamic acid ester structure, wherein the end of the side chain does not have a fluorinated alkyl group, and a solvent. The solvent comprises a first solvent having a boiling point of 185°C or higher and having a cyclic amide structure or a cyclic ester structure, and a second solvent having a boiling point of less than 185°C and a surface tension of less than 25 mN / m at 25°C. The content of the first solvent is 30% by mass or more and 70% by mass or less relative to the total amount of solvent, and the content of the second solvent is greater than 0% by mass and less than 30% by mass or less relative to the total amount of solvent.
