Abstract

This invention relates to an electrolysis unit used in a hydrogen production apparatus for producing hydrogen from a conductive fluid containing water. The electrolysis unit comprises: an ion exchange membrane having a first main surface and a second main surface located opposite the first main surface in the thickness direction; an anode portion disposed in contact with the first main surface and supplied with the conductive fluid; and a cathode portion disposed in contact with the second main surface to produce hydrogen from water contained in the conductive fluid. Each of the anode and cathode portions includes: a separator comprising a plate-shaped central portion having conductivity and a plate-shaped outer peripheral portion surrounding the central portion; an electrode disposed between the central portion and the ion exchange membrane, facing the central portion; and an insulating member surrounding the electrode and disposed between the outer peripheral portion and the ion exchange membrane. The outer periphery of at least one of the anode and cathode portions comprises: an opening for supplying the conductive fluid or discharging the hydrogen; an insulating member facing surface, which is the surface of the outer periphery facing the insulating member; and a flow path recessed from the insulating member facing surface, connecting the opening to the central portion. In the cross-section of the flow path, the normal line defining the connection portion of the inner surface of the flow path to the insulating member facing surface is inclined relative to the insulating member facing surface and intersects the opening surface of the flow path.
