Abstract

Encoding and decoding a current block of a current frame is disclosed. A first prediction block for the current block is obtained based on motion information associated with the first prediction block. A second prediction block for at least a portion of the current block is obtained based on motion information associated with a neighboring block. A prediction difference measure is obtained between the first prediction block and the second prediction block. The prediction difference measure is used to determine whether to combine the first prediction block and the second prediction block of the portion of the current block. The prediction difference measure can be a sum of absolute differences (SAD) between the first prediction block and the second prediction block. The prediction difference measure can be an absolute maximum of pair-wise differences between the first prediction block and the second prediction block.
