Method and apparatus of implicit decision and table selection for prediction refinement in video coding systems

Abstract

A method and apparatus of video coding for adaptive prediction refinement are disclosed. According to one method, whether to apply a sample offset refinement process to the current block is determined based on one or more existing flags and / or existing information available at both the encoder side and the decoder side. If the sample offset refinement process being applied to the current block: one or more offsets are derived for a target prediction sample of the current block based on one or more weights, one or more sample differences associated with a template area, or both, wherein said one or more sample differences associated with the template area are calculated between one or more reconstructed samples and one or more predicted samples associated with the template area; and the target prediction sample is refined using said one or more offsets to generate a refined prediction sample.
