Photonics alignment device, photonics system and method of manufacturing the same

Abstract

A photonic alignment device, for use in a semiconductor photonics system, may include a combination of alignment grooves and alignment guides to provide a highly reliable and repeatable mechanism for aligning a photonic integrated circuit device, an optical interconnect structure, and an optical fiber. The photonics alignment device may increase manufacturing throughput of semiconductor photonics systems in that the photonics alignment device enables alignment of the optical fiber and optical interconnect structure to be achieved in an expedient matter without having to strip the cladding from around the end of the fiber core for optically coupling the optical fiber to the optical interconnect structure (which eliminates a time-consuming processing operation in the manufacturing of semiconductor photonics systems).
