Method and apparatus for video coding

Abstract

A method and apparatus of partitioning a picture into CTUs using an adaptive partition scheme are disclosed. According to this method, for the decoder side, one or more syntax elements are parsed to determine a target partition scheme among multiple partition schemes. A target set of CTUs is determined according to the target partition scheme. A decoding process is applied to the encoded data to derive the extended picture and the extended regions are discarded to derive a reconstructed version of the current picture. For the encoder side, one or more syntax elements are signalled to determine the target partition scheme among multiple partition schemes. The current picture is extended to an extended picture having dimensions that are multiples of a CTU size and is partitioned into a target set of CTUs according to the target partition scheme for encoding.
