Abstract
Description
Technical Field
[0001] This disclosure generally relates to cosmetic ingredients, and more specifically, to cosmetic ingredients containing stabilized visual pigments. Prior Technology
[0002] Retinoids are frequently used in the personal care industry due to their biological benefits and efficacy. For example, retinol acts as a regulator of epidermal cell growth, normal cell differentiation, and cell maintenance. However, retinoids are also considered unstable under a range of degradation conditions. When exposed to UV light, retinoids undergo photoreactions such as photoisomerization, photopolymerization, photooxidation, and photodegradation. Retinoids are also sensitive to oxidation and heat, and therefore degrade when exposed to oxygen and high temperatures. In most cases, retinoid degradation leads to a loss of biological efficacy.
[0003] The personal care industry has attempted to address retinoid stability issues through technologies such as retinoid encapsulation, nano-formulation, and the creation of novel retinoid derivatives. For example, retinyl ester derivatives such as retinyl palmitate, retinyl propionate, retinyl acetate, and retinyl retinoate have been successfully developed and used in personal care products. However, this approach is complex and may be difficult to predict whether increased stability will occur. Furthermore, each new retinoid derivative may have its own efficacy and stability characteristics, which may require further specialized research to optimize its use in personal care products. These challenges may lead to increased development and consumer costs. Summary of the Invention

[0006] none Implementation
[0007] This disclosure generally relates to cosmetic ingredients, and more specifically, to cosmetic ingredients containing stabilized visual pigments.
[0008] As discussed above, the stability of retinoid pigments can be a concern in cosmetic ingredients and other personal care products. Conventional methods for stabilizing retinoid pigments may involve developing complex formulations and even synthesizing and testing novel retinoid pigment derivatives. These difficulties can lead to increased costs.
[0009] This disclosure provides compositions and methods that meet the aforementioned needs while offering related advantages. Specifically, this disclosure shows that cosmetic compositions containing at least one emollient and at least one retinoid pigment can surprisingly maintain retinoid pigment stability over extended post-formulation (storage) periods. For example, the cosmetic compositions of this disclosure can maintain the retinoid pigment concentration within about 10% of the as-formulated concentration for at least about 6 months. Surprisingly, the composition maintains retinoid pigment stability even when stored under heated conditions (40°C) and in the presence of moisture (relative humidity of 60%). The surprising storage stability of the cosmetic compositions described in this invention provides extended shelf life and potentially higher activity in the hands of consumers. Furthermore, because storage degradation and its impact on efficacy need not be considered, it is possible to formulate cosmetic compositions according to this disclosure using less retinoid pigment than with other methods. The result is a reduction in costs.
[0010] The cosmetic composition disclosed herein can be produced in various forms. Suitable forms may include, for example, solid, liquid, paste, gel, cream, or similar. A solid form may be particularly desirable. Suitable solid forms may be malleable or non-malleable. In such forms, the cosmetic composition may be aqueous (containing an aqueous fluid) or non-aqueous (without added water). For the solid form of the cosmetic composition, it is particularly desirable to have no added water and to be substantially anhydrous.
[0011] Retinoids are vitamin A derivatives and may be natural or synthetic. Non-limiting examples of suitable retinoids include, but are not limited to, retinol, retinal, retinoic acid, isotretinoin, alitretinoin, etretinate, atratin, adapalene, bexarotene, tazarotene, trifarotene, retinyl esters, retinoic acid esters, and the like. Suitable retinyl esters may include, for example, retinyl palmitate, retinyl propionate, retinyl acetate, the like, or any combination thereof. Suitable retinoic acid esters may include, but are not limited to, hydroxypinazone retinoic acid esters, retinyl retinoic acid esters, the like, or any combination thereof. Retinyl retinoic acid esters may be classified as esters of retinyl esters and retinoic acid.

[0015] At least one retinoid may be dispersed (mixed) within at least one humectant in the cosmetic composition disclosed herein. The dispersion of at least one retinoid within at least one humectant may be homogeneous or heterogeneous. The dispersion may be achieved by mixing at least one retinoid and at least one humectant together in a suitable manner, such as by agitating the mixture of at least one retinoid and at least one humectant. Without being bound by theory or mechanism, it is believed that at least one humectant may form a matrix that at least partially surrounds at least one retinoid and confers stability thereto.
[0016] Humectants keep the skin moisturized and are common ingredients in the personal care industry. Due to their function of keeping the skin moisturized, humectants can bring many skin benefits, such as anti-inflammatory properties, anti-itching properties, anti-mitotic properties, wound healing properties, etc. Based on the degree to which humectants help keep the skin moisturized, humectants can be divided into three major categories: moisturizers, emollients, and occlusives. [0056] The above samples were tested under two temperature conditions. Each sample was placed in a stabilization chamber maintained at room temperature (25°C ± 2°C) or accelerated (increased) temperature (40°C ± 2°C). Each stabilization chamber was maintained at a relative humidity of 60% ± 5%. The stability of the retinoid pigment was monitored at different time points: initially, after one month, two months, three months, and six months. The stability of the retinoid pigment was assessed by removing samples from the stabilization chamber and analyzing hydroxypinazone retinate using UPLC / UV-VIS (Waters ACQUITY UPLC H-Class PLUS System with photodiode array (PDA) detector). The analysis used a wavelength of 360 nm. The measured concentrations were approximately [missing information]. [+]10% measurement accuracy. Table 2 below shows the measured concentrations (in wt%) of hydroxypinazone retinate at the selected sampling intervals. Due to some initial degradation of the raw material hydroxypinazone retinate, the initial and subsequent concentrations are believed to deviate from the expected values by 0.1 wt%. Table 2 Sample 1 (wt%) Sample 2 (wt%) Sample 3 (wt%) Time point 25°C 40°C 25°C 40°C 25°C 40°C initial 0.087 0.087 0.091 0.091 0.091 0.091 1 month 0.090 0.088 0.089 0.090 0.091 0.092 3 months 0.094 0.090 0.092 0.092 0.098 0.095 6 months 0.090 0.085 0.091 0.085 0.095 0.086
[0057] After 3 and 6 months of stability testing, the visual appearance of the samples did not change significantly compared to their initial visual appearance. There were no changes in color, color vibrancy, pungent odor, surface blistering, spots, or similar characteristics. Furthermore, the visual appearance of samples aged at different test temperatures was not different. As shown in Table 2, the concentration of hydroxypinazone retinyl ester remained essentially constant within the measurement accuracy during the 6-month testing period.
