Technical Field

[0001] [Cross-reference to related applications] []

[0002] This application claims priority to Indian Patent Application No. IN202121046312, filed on October 11, 2021, which is incorporated herein by reference in its entirety.

[0003] This disclosure relates to a method for controlling unwanted vegetation growth. More specifically, this disclosure relates to a method for controlling the growth of the weedy broadleaf spermacoce latifolia using synergistic combinations / components. Prior Technology

[0004] Weeds are unwanted plants that are harmful to agriculture and significantly impact crop yields. Farmers use various types of herbicides to control weeds. Often, herbicides with different modes of action are combined, allowing for broader control and management of herbicide resistance.

[0005] Borreria latifolia (also known as broadleaf yellow sedge) is a major weed found across the Americas, South Asia, and Southeast Asia. It is a prolific seeder, grows rapidly, and becomes reproductively viable within two months. Given its aggressive colonization, timely control of its spread is crucial. However, currently known herbicide combinations are insufficient to control resistant and persistent weeds such as the weedy Borreria latifolia.

[0006] Additionally, combinations of herbicides may not always produce the desired effect. Combinations of herbicides can lead to additive or antagonistic effects. They can also cause phytotoxicity to crops, making them an undesirable combination. Therefore, careful selection of herbicides is necessary so that they can be combined to provide a synergistic effect in controlling weeds, while avoiding phytotoxicity to crops and reducing the chance of weeds developing resistance to specific herbicides.

[0007] Accordingly, the art requires a method for using combinations to protect crops from the weedy broadleaf clover, such combinations having advantageous properties, such as synergistic effects, aiding in resistance management, reducing the dosage of herbicides used, and having excellent residual effects. [Purpose of the Invention]

[0022] The following discussion describes some representative embodiments of the invention. The invention is not limited to the specific details and representative methods in its broader aspects. Illustrative examples are described in this section in conjunction with the provided examples and methods.

[0023] Note that, as used in this specification, the singular forms "a" and "the" include plural references unless the context clearly states otherwise. Thus, for example, a reference to a composition containing a "surfactant" includes a mixture of two or more surfactants. It should also be noted that the term "or" is generally used in its meaning as including "and / or" unless otherwise clearly stated in the text. The terms "emulsifier" and "surfactant" refer to substantially the same thing and are used interchangeably. Furthermore, the terms "composition" or "formulation" also refer to substantially the same thing and are used interchangeably.

[0024] Unless otherwise stated, quantities expressed in "%" or "% w / w" refer to the weight percentage of the total solution or composition. The invention is described in detail below in all its aspects:

[0025] Phosphinothricin (DL-hosphinothricin-4-yl(methyl)phosphonic acid) is a racemic phosphate iminoamino acid (Hoerlein, G. 1994; glufosinate (Phosphinothricin), a natural amino acid with unexpected herbicidal properties. Rev. of Environmental Contamination and Toxicology 138, 73-145). Its ammonium salt (phosphinothricin ammonium salt) is widely used as a non-selective herbicide and is the active ingredient in commercial herbicide formulations such as Basta™, Buster™, Challenge™, Conquest™, Dash™, Final™, Finale™, Liberty™, and Ignite™. The L-isomer of glutamate is a structural analog of glutamine and is therefore a competitive inhibitor of bacterial and plant glutamine synthetase (GS) (Bayer et al., 1972, Phosphinothricin and phosphinothricyl-alanyl-alanin. Helv. Chim. Acta 55, 224-239; Leason et al., 1982, Inhibition of pea leaf glutamine synthetase by methioninsulfoximine, Phosphinothricin and other glutamate analogs. J. Phytochem. 21, 855-857). The D-isomer is not a GS inhibitor and has no herbicidal activity.

[0026] Chemical structures of D-sparganum and L-sparganum.

[0027] The inventors unexpectedly discovered that the weedy broadleaf duckweed can be completely controlled by a combination of sclerotinia serratifolia and at least one herbicide: (a) Nitrophenyl ether herbicides; (b) Imidazolinone herbicides; (c) Organophosphate herbicides; (d) Dicarboxylic acid imine herbicides; (e) Phenoxyacetic acid herbicides; (f) Pyridine herbicides; (g) Cyclohexene oxime herbicides; (h) Aryloxyphenoxypropionic acid herbicides; (i) triazolone herbicides; and / or (j) Uracil herbicides.

[0028] Even more unexpectedly, the combination of the herbicide and the second herbicide showed a synergistic effect in controlling the broadleaf privet weed. The degree of synergistic enhancement in the control of broadleaf privet weed by the above combination was unpredictable and beyond expectation.

[0029] As used herein, the term "glufosinate" refers to any molecule of racemic phosphomolybdate amino acid or its salt. Agriculturally acceptable salts may be used, such as monosodium, disodium, monopotassium, dipotassium, calcium, ammonium, -NH₃(CH₃)⁺, -NH₂(CH₃)₂⁺, -NH(CH₃)₃⁺, -NH(CH₃)₂(C₂H₄OH)⁺, -NH₂(CH₃)(C₂H₄OH)⁺, and similar salts. The term also includes forms and isomers of glufosinate, such as glufosinate-p, L-glufosinate, D-glufosinate, and their sodium, potassium, or ammonium salts. The term may broadly refer to any form of glufosinate or its salts, such as solvates, hydrates, anhydrous forms, polymorphs, pseudopolymorphs, amorphous forms, or mixtures thereof.

[0030] Preferably, the herbicide styrax used in any of the forms or examples described herein may be replaced by or used interchangeably with its L-isomer (i.e., L-styrax).

[0031] As used herein, the term "L-glufosinate" refers to the L-isomer of glufosinate or its salts. The L-isomer of glufosinate is a structural analog of glutamate and is therefore a competitive inhibitor of glutamine synthase (GS) in bacteria and plants. The L-mirror isomer of glufosinate inhibits glutamine synthase, leading to the accumulation of toxic ammonium ions and indirectly halting photosynthesis. It is also known as phosphinothricin or (S)-2-amino-4-(hydroxy(methyl)phosphono)butyric acid. This term generally encompasses derivatives, such as salts and esters of L-glufosinate. The term can broadly refer to any form of L-glufosinate or its salts, such as solvates, hydrates, anhydrous forms, polymorphs, pseudopolymorphs, amorphous forms, or mixtures thereof. The term "L-glufosinate or a salt thereof" encompasses any salt of L-glufosinate, preferably sodium, potassium, and ammonium salts. The term may also refer to a mixture of racemic isomers of L-glufosinate, D-glufosinate, and their salts, wherein the content of L-glufosinate or its salt in the mixture is 70% or higher, preferably 80% or higher, and more preferably 90% or higher.

[0032] Therefore, in one embodiment, the preferred solid herbicide is L-solid herbicide.

[0033] In this discussion, the term "weedy Spermacoce latifolia" refers to a weed that grows in fields where other crops are grown. That is, weedy Spermacoce latifolia is a weed because it is not the target crop.

[0034] The term "herbicide" as used in this article refers to a compound that controls or alters plant growth. The term "herbicidally effective amount" refers to the amount of such a compound or combination of such compounds that can control or alter plant growth. Control effects include all deviations from natural development, such as killing, retardation, leaf burn, albinism, dwarfing, etc. The term "plant" refers to all the physical parts of a plant, including seeds, seedlings, saplings, roots, tubers, stems, stalks, branches, leaves, and fruits. "Locus" is intended to include soil, seeds, seedlings, and established vegetation.

[0170] The expected efficacy of L-glucopyranoside and other herbicide combinations was calculated using the established Colby method. Any difference between observed and "expected" efficacy may be attributed to synergistic effects between the two compounds.

[0171] In the Colby method, the expected (or predicted) response of a herbicide combination is calculated by dividing the product of the responses observed in each individual component of the combination when applied alone by 100, and then subtracting this value from the sum of the responses observed in each individual component when applied alone. An unexpected enhancement of the combination's efficacy is then determined by comparing the observed combination response with the expected (or predicted) response, which is calculated from the responses observed in each individual component. If the observed combination response is greater than the expected (or predicted) response, or conversely, if the difference between the observed and expected responses is greater than zero, the combination is said to be synergistic or unexpectedly effective (Colby, SR, Weeds, 1967(15), pp. 20-22). The Colby method requires only the application of a single dose of each herbicide or a mixture of two doses. The formula for calculating expected efficacy (EE) is compared with observed efficacy (OE) to determine the efficacy of the invention, as explained below:

[0172] The expected effects of the combination of the two active ingredients are as follows: EE = (A + B - (A x B) / 100)

[0173] The expected effects of the combination of the three active ingredients are as follows: EE = A + B + C – (AB + AC + BC) / 100 + ABC / 10,000 in, A = The efficacy observed when active ingredient A is at the same concentration as used in the mixture. B = The efficacy observed when active ingredient B is at the same concentration as used in the mixture. C = The efficacy observed when the active ingredient C is at the same concentration as that used in the mixture.
