Technical Field
[0001] This disclosure generally relates to cosmetic, hair care, body care, and / or skin care products, and more specifically to systems and methods for containing and maintaining such products from unintentional movement. Prior Technology
[0002] Cosmetic, hair care, body care, and / or skin care products are available in a variety of different containers and can be applied using a variety of different methods. As an example, lipstick or lip balm products may take the form of an elongated tube, cylinder, square, rectangular, rhomboid prism, cone, and / or other non-prismatic shape and other shapes housed within a protective container. Such containers allow the cosmetic substance to selectively advance to an extended position relative to the container to be applied by the user. The cosmetic substance may typically be a solid (but relatively soft) molded composition that can be inserted into the cavity of a retaining cup. In the event of an accidental drop or other impact to the container, the cosmetic substance may be damaged, broken, or otherwise detached or partially separated from the retaining cup. In some instances, the retaining cup (or other features of the container) may include a separation retaining member in the form of a hook, nodule, or similar component, which may be pushed into the cosmetic substance to attempt to prevent or otherwise restrict the movement of the cosmetic substance relative to the cup and the container during such accidental drops or impacts. However, these features may create localized stress points that could eventually deform or otherwise damage cosmetic substances.
[0003] Therefore, improved accessories with improved functions are needed. Summary of the Invention
[0004] Examples within the scope of this disclosure relate to a cosmetic product container and holding mechanism, which may include a cup for holding a cosmetic substance. The cup includes: a cup body having a first end, a second end, and an inner sidewall forming a cup cavity; and a stepped holding member disposed on the inner sidewall of the cup body and extending into the cup cavity. The stepped holding member has a first width value extending around the periphery of the inner sidewall.

[0012] Generally, various methods are used to provide cosmetic containers and retaining mechanisms that properly hold cosmetic substances during use and in the event of accidental drops and / or impacts. The methods described herein provide secure retention of cosmetic substances while reducing or eliminating potentially harmful stress areas. Thus, the systems described herein can be used to contain and retain a variety of cosmetic substances with varying degrees of material softness.
[0013] Referring now to the illustrations, a cosmetic product 10 is provided, comprising a cosmetic product container 100 containing and applying a cosmetic substance 101. The cosmetic product container 100 includes: an inner body 102 having a track 106, a spiral member 110, a shell 116, and a retaining mechanism or cup 120. In the illustrated example, the cosmetic substance 101 is in the form of a lipstick or lip balm product. It should be understood that the cosmetic substance 101 can be any type of cosmetic, hair care, body care, and / or skin care product applicable to a user. Other examples are possible. In some of these examples, the cosmetic substance 101 may include strong or other corrosive chemicals and / or ingredients, such as, for example, volatiles. The cosmetic substance 101 includes a first end 101a, a second end 101b, and an elongated body 101c extending therebetween along a longitudinal axis ("A"). Furthermore, the cosmetic substance 101 defines an outer cross-sectional dimension ("DO"). In the illustrated example, the outer cross-sectional dimension DO is in the form of an outer diameter or a circle. However, other examples are possible.

The inner body 102 defines a shelf 104 formed on its outer surface. In some configurations, a safety fastening mechanism (not shown) may be used to engage a portion of the cap (not shown) to conceal the cosmetic substance 101 for storage purposes. Any number of suitable safety fastening mechanisms may be used, such as snap-fit coupling, friction-fit coupling, threaded connection, and the like. Other examples are feasible. In other examples, a substrate (not shown) may be provided to encapsulate a portion of the inner body 102. If provided, such a substrate may be coupled to a portion of the cap.

It is noteworthy that this depth dimension is relatively shallow to allow cosmetic material 101 formed of a softer composition to flow more effectively into these areas during assembly.

As shown in the illustration, this width value 134a is typically wider because the retaining member 134 extends about 20% or more around the inner periphery of the cup body 124. It should be understood that the width value 134a and / or shape of the retaining member 134 can be modified to improve the retention performance of cosmetic substances 101 with different material properties (such as, for example, softness and the like).

In any of these configurations, after the cosmetic substance 101 is fully inserted into the cup cavity 125, additional cosmetic substance 101 flows into the retaining members 134. Thus, the cosmetic substance 101 is effectively locked in place within the cup cavity 125 while having additional surface contact with the cup body to facilitate retention.
[0024] In some instances, the cup 120 may include any number of optional features. For example, the cup body 124 may additionally include any number of optional auxiliary retaining members 140, which are in the form of tapered elongated ribs or notches inserted into or protruding into the cup cavity 125. Each of these auxiliary retaining members 140 may include a first end 140a having a first width value and a second end 140b having a second width value. As illustrated in Figures 6, 8, and 9, the first end 140a of the auxiliary retaining member 140 is generally narrower in the tangential direction than its second end 140b, such that a draft angle is formed relative to the center point in the auxiliary retaining member 140. In some instances, this draft angle may be between approximately 5° and approximately 25°. Other instances are possible.

It is worth noting that this configuration avoids applying a high insertion force to the cosmetic substance 101 during assembly. It should be understood that in some instances, the outer diameter of the cosmetic substance 101 need not be greater than or equal to the inner diameter of the inner wall 124c, because the auxiliary retaining member 140 occupies additional volume in the cup cavity 125. Additionally, it should be noted that the channel area 150 can also be used to retain the cosmetic substance 101 within the cup cavity 125.
[0028] In some instances, the cup body 124 may additionally include a base plate member 132 positioned at or near its first end 124a. This base plate member 132 provides additional support for the first end 101a of the cosmetic substance 101. In some instances, the base plate member 132 may include a frustoconical or beveled surface 133. A cup for holding a cosmetic substance, the cup comprising: a cup body having a first end, a second end, and an inner sidewall forming a cup cavity; and at least one retaining member disposed on and extending into the inner sidewall of the cup body, the at least one retaining member extending a width around a periphery of the inner sidewall, the cup further comprising an auxiliary retaining member disposed on the inner sidewall of the cup body and extending into the cup cavity, wherein the auxiliary retaining member includes an elongated notch having a first end and a second end, the first end having a first width, the second end having a second width, wherein the second width is greater than the first width, and wherein the elongated notch includes: An extension that extends inward from the inner wall into the cup cavity; and a recessed contact surface that extends substantially perpendicular to the extension.
2. The cup of claim 1, wherein the at least one retaining member includes a plurality of recesses extending inwardly into the inner wall in an axial pattern.
3. The cup of claim 1, wherein the at least one retaining member includes a plurality of recesses that extend inwardly into the inner wall in a radial pattern around the periphery of the inner wall.
4. The cup of claim 1, wherein the at least one retaining member includes an upper shelf surface that mates with the inner sidewall to define an undercut area.
5. The cup of claim 1, wherein the extension and the recessed contact surface cooperate to define a channel area.
6. The cup of claim 1 further includes a base plate member that defines an opening surrounded by a truncated conical surface.
7. A cosmetic product container comprising: an inner body having a first end and a second end, defining a container cavity; and a cup adapted to be at least partially disposed within the container cavity, the cup comprising: A cup body has a first body end, a second body end, and an inner sidewall forming a cup cavity, and at least one retaining member disposed on and extending into the inner sidewall of the cup body. The at least one retaining member extends a width around a periphery of the inner sidewall. The cup further includes an auxiliary retaining member disposed on the inner sidewall of the cup body and extending into the cup cavity. The auxiliary retaining member includes an elongated notch having a first end and a second end. The first end has a first width, and the second end has a second width, wherein the second width is greater than the first width. The elongated notch includes: an extension extending inward from the inner sidewall into the cup cavity; and a notch contact surface extending substantially perpendicular to the extension; and a cosmetic substance having a first end, a second end, and an elongated body therebetween, wherein at least a portion of the elongated body is disposed within the cup cavity.
8. The cosmetic product container of claim 7, wherein the at least one retaining member includes a plurality of recesses extending inwardly into the inner sidewall in an axial pattern.
9. The cosmetic product container of claim 7, wherein the at least one retaining member includes a plurality of recesses extending inwardly into the inner sidewall in a radial pattern around the periphery of the inner sidewall.
10. The cosmetic product container of claim 7, wherein the at least one retaining member includes an upper shelf surface that mates with the inner sidewall to define an undercut area.
11. The cosmetic product container of claim 7, wherein the extension and the notch contact surface cooperate to define an undercut area.
12. The cosmetic product container of claim 7 further includes a base plate member that defines an opening surrounded by a truncated conical surface.
13. A method of assembling a cosmetic product, the method comprising: providing a cup, the cup comprising: A cup body having a first body end, a second body end, and an inner sidewall forming a cup cavity; The cup includes at least one retaining member disposed on and extending into the inner wall of the cup body, the at least one retaining member further extending a width around a periphery of the inner wall, the cup further including an auxiliary retaining member disposed on the inner wall of the cup body and extending into the cup cavity, wherein the auxiliary retaining member includes an elongated notch having a first end and a second end, the first end having a first width, the second end having a second width, wherein the second width is greater than the first width, wherein the elongated notch includes: an extension extending inwardly from the inner wall into the cup cavity; and a notch contact surface extending substantially perpendicular to the extension; inserting a cosmetic substance having a first end, a second end, and an elongated body therebetween into the cup cavity of the cup, such that at least a portion of the cosmetic substance enters the at least one retaining member; and at least partially disposing the cup within a container cavity of an inner body.
14. The method of claim 13, wherein the auxiliary retaining member is adapted to push at least a portion of the cosmetic substance into the at least one retaining member.
