AI Technical Summary
The challenge of replacing polysiloxanes with natural oils in soft-focus cosmetics is significant due to the similar reflectivity of natural oils to commonly used particles, making it difficult to achieve the desired soft focus effect and gloss, while maintaining a natural skin appearance.
A cosmetic composition comprising at least one natural oil, a blurring agent, and a water-in-oil emulsifier, which includes specific natural oils like jojoba, coconut, avocado, and olive oils, along with blurring agents such as titanium dioxide-coated transparent mica and silica-based materials, to achieve a high diffuse and specular reflectance for a soft focus and glossy effect.
The composition provides a dual benefit of high gloss and soft focus effect, effectively reducing the appearance of skin blemishes with improved skin radiance and texture.
Abstract
Description
Technical Field
[0001] The present disclosure generally relates to soft-focus cosmetic compositions and methods for reducing the appearance of skin blemishes. Prior Art
[0002] To meet regulatory requirements, meet consumer demands, and reduce environmental impact, the cosmetics industry is striving to move away from silicones. Natural oils have been a leading candidate for replacing silicones in cosmetics due to the numerous skincare benefits they can deliver. However, fully or partially replacing silicones with natural oils in soft-focus cosmetics presents significant technical challenges, as silicones have a significantly different reflectivity than natural oils.
[0003] Soft-focus cosmetic compositions are highly desirable because they can achieve a natural-looking skin with fewer imperfections. Specifically, soft-focus cosmetic compositions can conceal skin imperfections by scattering incident light, blurring them while still allowing natural skin features to be visible. Simple covering techniques, on the other hand, lose most of the natural skin features, resulting in an undesirable, unrealistic appearance. The recognized standard for measuring the soft-focus effect is diffuse reflectance. The higher the diffuse reflectance of a composition, the better its soft-focus effect.
[0004] Soft-focus cosmetic compositions typically contain particles and a liquid carrier, where the particles have a different refractive index than the liquid carrier. It's generally accepted in the cosmetics industry that the greater the difference in refractive index between the particles and the liquid carrier in a composition, the greater the potential for a soft-focus effect. For example, many particles commonly used in soft-focus cosmetic compositions have a refractive index of approximately 1.46, while the silicone used in the liquid carrier in such compositions has a refractive index of approximately 1.38. This refractive index difference results in the desired soft-focus effect in cosmetic compositions.
[0005] However, when natural oils are substituted for silicones, the reflectivity of natural oils (approximately 1.46) is very similar to particles commonly used in soft-focus cosmetic compositions, making it very challenging to achieve a meaningful soft-focus effect in cosmetic compositions based on natural oils rather than silicones.
[0006] Another challenge in soft-focus cosmetic compositions is balancing the soft-focus effect with the glossiness. While the soft-focus effect can conceal skin imperfections, excessive use can result in a lack of radiance. Glossiness is considered an indicator of healthy skin and highly desired by consumers. The recognized standard for measuring gloss is specular reflectance. The higher the specular reflectance of a composition, the better its glossiness. Achieving a good glossy effect in soft-focus cosmetic compositions is highly desired by consumers, but achieving this effect is always challenging.
[0007] This disclosure relates to a cosmetic composition with an unexpected soft-focus effect, comprising at least one natural oil, at least one blurring agent, and at least one water-in-oil emulsifier. Surprisingly, good skin radiance can also be achieved with this soft-focus cosmetic composition. This disclosure also relates to a method for reducing the appearance of skin blemishes by using this soft-focus cosmetic composition. Summary of the Invention

[0011] As used herein, the singular forms "a," "an," and "the" include plural referents unless the context clearly dictates otherwise.
[0012] As used herein, a sentence reciting a list of alternatives has the meaning of providing a list of sentences such that each given alternative is provided in a separate sentence. For example, the sentence "The composition comprises A, B, or C" has the meaning of the following three separate sentences: "Alternatively, the composition comprises A. Alternatively, the composition comprises B. Alternatively, the composition comprises C."
[0013] As used herein, "and / or" means either "and" or "or." For example, "A and / or B" means either "A, B, or both A and B."
[0014] As used herein, "skin imperfection" means any type of mark, spot, discoloration, or defect that appears on the skin. Non-limiting examples of skin imperfections are wrinkles and fine lines.
[0015] As used herein, "soluble" means that the solute is partially or completely (and preferably completely) soluble in the solvent, preferably to an equilibrium concentration of at least about 0.001 mg / mL at 25°C. "Oil-soluble active" means that the active is partially or completely (and preferably completely) soluble in the natural oil, preferably to an equilibrium concentration of at least about 0.001 mg / mL at 25°C. "Water-soluble active" means that the active is partially or completely (and preferably completely) soluble in water, preferably to an equilibrium concentration of at least about 0.001 mg / mL at 25°C.
[0016] It has been unexpectedly discovered that a natural oil-based cosmetic composition can achieve a soft-focus effect. This disclosure relates to a soft-focus cosmetic composition comprising at least one natural oil and at least one blurring agent. This disclosure also relates to a method for reducing the appearance of skin blemishes using a soft-focus cosmetic composition comprising at least one natural oil and at least one blurring agent.
[0017] A method for reducing the appearance of skin blemishes may include the following steps: a) identifying an area of skin in which the appearance of skin blemishes is to be reduced; and b) topically applying a soft-focus cosmetic composition to the area of skin. Preferably, the soft-focus cosmetic composition has an immediate effect of reducing the appearance of skin blemishes after application.
[0018] The soft-focus cosmetic composition can be in the form of an emulsion, cream, lotion, paste, suspension, powder, gel, cushion compact, hot pour, or aerosol. Preferably, the soft-focus cosmetic composition is in the form of an emulsion, lotion, or gel. More preferably, the soft-focus cosmetic composition is in the form of an emulsion. An emulsion is a colloidal system consisting of two liquid phases, oil and water, one of which (the internal phase) is dispersed in the other (the external phase). Emulsions can be stable or metastable. The most preferred form of the soft-focus cosmetic composition is a water-in-oil (W / O) emulsion. A W / O emulsion is an emulsion consisting of an aqueous phase (the internal phase) dispersed in a continuous oil phase (the external phase). At least one natural oil is present in the external phase of the W / O emulsion. According to a preferred embodiment, the external phase of the W / O emulsion is primarily composed of a natural oil. W / O emulsions with active ingredients deliver water- and oil-soluble wrinkle and line actives to reduce the appearance of long-term lines and wrinkles while offering a wider range of texture options. W / O emulsions retain pigments and film formers in the external phase for a true color appearance and long-lasting performance.
[0019] While the soft-focus cosmetic composition may be provided as a foundation, it should be understood that the composition may be used in other cosmetic products, including but not limited to concealers, oil gels, lip glosses, cushion compacts, hot-infusions, and / or eyeshadows. In embodiments of the present disclosure, the composition may be provided as a daytime foundation and nighttime colorless moisturizer, an SPF 30 foundation, a silicone-free foundation, and / or an all-around anti-aging active / oil kit (for the delivery of cosmetic actives).
[0020] According to yet another alternative embodiment, the soft-focus cosmetic composition is substantially free of silicone. "Substantially free of silicone" means that silicone is present in the soft-focus cosmetic composition in an amount less than 0.01% by weight, based on the total weight of the soft-focus cosmetic composition.
[0021] The soft-focus cosmetic composition disclosed herein has a diffuse reflectance of at least 2.5. This soft-focus cosmetic composition can provide dual benefits with a single foundation formula: high gloss and a high blurring effect. Conventional foundation formulas use a large number of particles to achieve a blurring effect. However, this approach often results in a dull and lackluster appearance. The embodiments disclosed herein offer the unique property of combining a soft-focus effect with a high-gloss appearance. The soft-focus cosmetic composition disclosed herein has a specular reflectance of at least 3.4. [Natural Oil]

[0028] Natural oils may contain triglycerides, free fatty acids, tocopherols, sterols, stanols, phospholipids, waxes, squalene, phenolic compounds, or mixtures thereof. Natural oils offer numerous anti-aging therapeutic benefits for the skin, including anti-inflammatory and antioxidant activity, wound healing, and / or skin barrier repair. The inclusion of natural oils can also enhance the delivery of oil-soluble active ingredients in cosmetic compositions. Due to their high partition coefficient (logP), natural oils readily penetrate the lipid bilayer of skin cell membranes. Oil-soluble active ingredients can penetrate through the stratum corneum into the epidermis, achieving enhanced anti-aging performance. [Blur]
[0029] Blurring agents are materials that blur skin imperfections by manipulating the penetration and scattering of light entering and exiting the skin. This blurring effect is also known as a soft-focus effect. Cosmetic compositions exhibiting this soft-focus effect are soft-focus cosmetic compositions. Skin imperfections such as wrinkles and fine lines are visible through light-dark contrast, which highlights even very subtle lines. Soft-focus cosmetic compositions optically reduce contrast and conceal skin imperfections. Blurring agents do not typically produce whiteness, but rather a naturally translucent surface. Achieving a blurring effect with a cosmetic composition may require particles with a higher refractive index (RI) and a large RI difference between the blurring agent and the vehicle.
[0030] The fuzzy agent may comprise a particulate material. The particulate material may be in the form of solid, filled, or hollow particles. The particle shape may be oblate, prolate, bladed, or equant. Preferably, the fuzzy agent particles are spherical or platelet-shaped. [ , , ] [] [Water-in-oil emulsifier]
[0042] An emulsifier is a material that helps two liquids mix. Structurally, an emulsifier typically has a lipophilic portion and a hydrophilic portion. The hydrophilic-lipophilic balance (HLB) value of an emulsifier is used in the industry to indicate whether the hydrophilic or lipophilic characteristics dominate the properties of the emulsifier. Oil-in-water emulsifiers have high HLB values (about 10 to 18), indicating that they are hydrophilic and suitable for emulsifying fats or oils in water. Water-in-oil emulsifiers have low HLB values (about 2 to 8, preferably about 3 to 7, and more preferably about 4 to 6), indicating that they are lipophilic and suitable for water-in-oil emulsions.
[0043] The water-in-oil emulsifier may be selected from the group consisting of sorbitan isostearate, sorbitan stearate, sorbitan olivate, sorbitan sesquioleate, cetyl PEG / PPG-10 / 1 dimethicone, polyglyceryl-3 diisostearate, lauryl PEG-9 polydimethylsiloxyethyl dimethicone, PEG-30 dipolyhydroxystearate, polyglyceryl-6 polyricinoleate, polyglyceryl-2 isostearate, disteardimonium hectorite, polyglyceryl-4 diisostearate / polyhydroxystearate / sebacate, and mixtures thereof. Preferably, the water-in-oil emulsifier can be selected from the group consisting of sorbitan isostearate, cetyl PEG / PPG-10 / 1 dimethicone, polyglyceryl-3 diisostearate, lauryl PEG-9 polydimethylsiloxyethyl dimethicone, PEG-30 dipolyhydroxystearate, sorbitan sesquioleate, polyglyceryl-6 polyricinoleate, polyglyceryl-2 isostearate, disteardimonium hectorite, and mixtures thereof.
[0044] The water-in-oil emulsifier may be present in the soft-focus cosmetic composition in an amount ranging from 0.01% to about 20%, preferably from about 0.05% to about 15%, and more preferably from about 0.1% to about 10%, based on the total weight of the soft-focus cosmetic composition. [Additional components]
[0045] The soft-focus cosmetic composition may further contain other additional components, which can be selected by a skilled artisan based on the desired characteristics of the final product and are suitable for making the composition more cosmetically or aesthetically acceptable or providing additional benefits. The components useful herein are conveniently categorized by specific benefits or their postulated modes of action; however, a given category does not limit their use. Furthermore, it should be understood that a single component may provide multiple benefits. Oil-soluble active substances and water-soluble active substances
[0046] The oil-soluble active ingredient may comprise any active ingredient or mixture thereof mentioned in the section "Additional components", which is partially or completely (and preferably completely) dissolved in the natural oil and preferably forms an equilibrium concentration of at least about 0.001 mg / mL at 25°C.
[0047] Preferably, the oil-soluble active ingredient may include sunflower (Helianthus annuus) seed cake, barley (Hordeum vulgare) extract, cucumber (Cucumic sativus) fruit extract, Indian myrrh (Commiphora mukul) resin extract, C12-15 alkyl benzoate, tribehenin, ceramide NG, PEG-10 phytosterols, palmitoyl hexapeptide-12, phospholipids, tricaprylyl / tricaprylin, tocopherol, stearic acid, oleic acid, linoleic acid, palmitic acid, rapeseed phytosterylglycerol, triolein, dipalmitoyl hydroxyproline, tocopheryl acetate, or a mixture thereof.
[0048] A non-limiting example of an oil-soluble active is a complex of sunflower (Helianthus annuus) seed cake, barley (Hordeum vulgare) extract, and cucumber (Cucumis sativus) fruit extract. This complex can act as a barrier. Available from Barnet under the trade name Phytofix-EC, this complex is a unique and optimized blend of soluble sphingolipids, triglycerides, and sterols dissolved in squalane to mimic the structure of the skin's membranes. A non-limiting example of an oil-soluble active is Indian myrrh (Commiphora mukul) resin extract, which can help smooth fine lines and wrinkles. This resin extract is obtained from a tree found in the arid regions of northwest India (i.e., Indian myrrh). It locally increases fat cell size, plumping up the skin from the inside out. Due to its "volumizing" effect, it restores volume to the skin and softens wrinkles. Another non-limiting example of an oil-soluble active ingredient is palmitoyl hexapeptide-12, which can smooth fine lines and wrinkles. It is an anti-aging, wrinkle-smoothing, and skin barrier repair ingredient. It stimulates cell communication and subsequently repairs aging-related skin damage.
[0049] The oil-soluble active ingredient may be present in an amount of 0.1% to about 30%, preferably about 1% to about 20%, and more preferably about 2% to about 15%, based on the total weight of the soft-focus cosmetic composition.
[0050] The water-soluble active substance may comprise any active substance or mixture thereof mentioned in the section "Additional components", which is partially or completely (and preferably completely) soluble in water and preferably forms an equilibrium concentration of at least about 0.001 mg / mL at 25°C.
[0051] The water-soluble active ingredient may include nicotinamide, trehalose, acetyl hexapeptide-8, hyaluronic acid, sucrose, or a mixture thereof. Nicotinamide and / or hyaluronic acid may have moisturizing properties. Trehalose may also have moisturizing properties. Acetyl hexapeptide-8 may help smooth fine lines and wrinkles. Sucrose may also have moisturizing properties.
[0052] The water-soluble active substance may be present in the soft-focus cosmetic composition in an amount ranging from 0.1% to about 30%, preferably from about 1% to about 20%, and more preferably from about 2% to about 15%, based on the total weight of the soft-focus cosmetic composition. Antioxidants and free radical scavengers
[0053] Antioxidants and free radical scavengers are particularly useful for providing protection against UV radiation, which can cause increased scaling or texture changes in the stratum corneum, and against other environmental factors that can cause skin damage. Such antioxidants / free radical scavengers include, for example, tocopheryl sorbate and other esters of tocopherol, as well as tocopheryl sorbate. anti-inflammatory agents
[0054] Anti-inflammatory agents enhance skin appearance benefits by, for example, contributing to evenness and acceptable skin tone and / or color. Optionally, anti-inflammatory agents include steroidal anti-inflammatory agents and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory agents. A steroidal anti-inflammatory agent may be hydrocortisone. So-called "natural" anti-inflammatory agents are also useful. For example, alpha bisabolol, aloe vera, Manjistha (extracted from plants of the genus Rubia (especially Rubia cordifolia), Guggal (extracted from plants of the genus Commiphora (especially Commiphora mukul)), kola extract, chamomile, and sea whip extract may also be used. antimicrobial agents
[0055] As used herein, "antimicrobial agent" means a compound capable of destroying microorganisms, preventing their development, or preventing their pathogenic effects. Antimicrobial agents are useful, for example, for acne control. Preferred antimicrobial agents include benzoyl peroxide, erythromycin, tetracycline, clindamycin, azelaic acid, resorcinol sulphate, phenoxyethanol, and Irgasan™ DP 300 (Ciba Geigy Corp., USA). [0071] The oil blend was prepared by mixing 5 parts jojoba (Simmonsdia chinesis) seed oil, 5 parts coconut (Cocos nucifera) oil, 20 parts avocado (Persea gratissima) oil, 10 parts argan (Argania spinosa) kernel oil, 20 parts olive (Olea europaea) fruit oil, and 3.75 parts sunflower (Helianthus annuus) oil at room temperature until completely dissolved. All parts are by weight. Example 2
[0072] The cosmetic base (Sample 1) was prepared by mixing 7 parts of the oil mixture from Example 1 with 50 parts of water. The cosmetic composition was prepared by adding 5 parts of the microparticle material (as shown in Table 1) to 95 parts of the cosmetic base and mixing for approximately 15 minutes to achieve uniform and complete dispersion. All parts are by weight.
[0073] The resulting cosmetic composition was tested for spectral reflectance using a Konica Minolta CM700D spectrometer. Over one minute, apply the sample evenly to a PMMA Helioplate HD6 using your fingertips, using a circular and cross-shaped motion and applying moderate pressure. Clean your finger with alcohol and pre-saturate it with the sample. The FDA recommends an application dose of 2 mg / cm². Allow the prepared sample to dry at room temperature for 20 minutes before testing.
[0074] After calibration of the Konica Minolta CM700D spectrophotometer, the instrument was set to reflectance spectrum mode, with both specular component included (SCI) and specular component excluded (SCE). An 8 mm target mask was attached to the instrument to allow for a larger measurement area. The visible spectrum between 400 nm and 700 nm was selected for full-color spectral analysis.
[0075] The prepared sample was placed on the black side of a Leneta chart for reflectance testing to eliminate light reflection from the Leneta chart background. Both diffuse and total reflectance were measured. Diffuse reflectance data was used as a haze indicator because it captures all light scattered by the makeup film from 0 to 180 degrees. To compare haze effects, the diffuse reflectance at the peak of the spectrum was used. For example, for liquid foundation, the reflectance at a wavelength of 620 nm was used to represent the foundation's color tone. Example 3
[0077] The cosmetic base (Sample 1) was prepared by mixing 7 parts of the oil mixture from Example 1 with 50 parts of water. The cosmetic composition was prepared by adding the particulate material to the cosmetic base according to the weight percentages in Table 2 and mixing for approximately 15 minutes to achieve uniform and complete dispersion. All parts are by weight. Specific materials: A: Chione HD Infinite White S130v (INCI: Synthetic Fluorphlogopite / Titanium Dioxide, available from BASF); B: SH219 (INCI: Silica / Titanium Dioxide, available from Sunjin Beauty Science); and C: Sunsphere (INCI: Styrene / Acrylates Copolymer, available from Dow).
[0078] The spectral reflectance of the resulting cosmetic composition was measured using a Konica Minolta CM700D spectrometer.
[0079] After calibration of the Konica Minolta CM700D spectrophotometer, the instrument was set to reflectance spectrum mode, with both specular component included (SCI) and specular component excluded (SCE). An 8 mm target mask was attached to the instrument to allow for a larger measurement area. The visible spectrum between 400 nm and 700 nm was selected for full-color spectral analysis.
[0080] For reflectance testing, the prepared sample was placed on the black side of a Leneta chart to eliminate light reflection from the Leneta chart background. Both diffuse and total reflectance were measured. Specular reflectance was calculated according to the following equation: (Total Reflectance = Diffuse Reflectance + Specular Reflectance). Diffuse reflectance data is used as a haze indicator because it captures all light scattered by the makeup film from 0 to 180 degrees. To compare haze effects, the diffuse reflectance at the peak of the spectrum is used. For example, for liquid foundation, the reflectance at a wavelength of 620 nm is used to represent the foundation's color tone.
