Abstract

A weight system is disclosed. An exemplary system comprises a first elongated weight portion, a second elongated weight portion, and a third weight portion positioned between the first and second elongated weight portions. The first elongated weight portion is coupled to the third weight portion on a first side of the third weight portion, and the second elongated weight portion is coupled to the third weight portion on a second side of the third weight portion. A first fastening member is configured to releasably secure the weight system to a golf club head.

[0002] Embodiments of the present disclosure generally relate to improvements in golf clubs, and particularly weight systems for golf club heads.BACKGROUND

[0003] To influence the feel, performance, and playability of a golf club, weights may be used with golf club heads. These weights may be used to adjust the weight distribution in the club head, which can affect how stable the club feels during a swing. More weight in certain areas can provide more control over the club head, especially through impact. Such weights may also impact the distance and trajectory of a golf ball. Heavier club heads typically generate more momentum and therefore can potentially deliver more distance, especially if other aspects of the swing remain consistent. Adjusting weight distribution using such weights may also make the club head more forgiving, such as for off-center hits. This is especially important in drivers and irons where consistency in ball striking can greatly affect performance.

[0004] Existing weight systems for golf club heads comprise separate movable weights, which experience issues such as difficulty in adjustment and potential to be easily misplaced. Therefore, it would also be highly desirable to have an improved weight system for a golf club head, which may, among other things, achieve a compact and user-friendly design and ease of adjustability.SUMMARY OF THE DISCLOSURE

[0005] Embodiments of the present disclosure are directed to an improved weight system for a golf club head. Certain embodiments of the present disclosure may include a weight system, comprising a first elongated weight portion, a second elongated weight portion, and a third elongated weight portion positioned between the first and second elongated weight portions. The first elongated weight portion may be coupled to the third weight portion on a first side of the third weight portion, and the second elongated weight portion may be coupled to the third weight portion on a second side of the third weight portion. A first fastening member may be configured to releasably secure the weight system to a golf club head.

[0006] Certain embodiments of the present disclosure may also include a weight system, comprising a first weight portion including a first side and a second side, a second weight portion extending from the first side of the first weight portion, and a third weight portion extending from the second side of the first weight portion. [0020] Reference will now be made in detail to various embodiments, examples of which are illustrated in the accompanying drawings. Wherever possible, the same reference numbers will be used throughout the drawings to refer to the same or like parts.

[0021] FIG. 1 illustrates an exemplary weight system 100 for a golf club head, consistent with disclosed embodiments. In some embodiments, weight system 100 may include a first weight portion 104, a second weight portion 106, and a third weight portion 108. Generally, weight system 100 may comprise a three-piece structure of first weight portion 104, second weight portion 106, and third weight portion 108 and may allow for different materials (e.g., tungsten, steel, titanium, or others) with varying densities and weights to be used for first weight portion 104, second weight portion 106, and third weight portion 108 to achieve a desired weight bias for a club head and adjust the feel, distance, trajectory, and other performance features of striking a golf ball. It should also be appreciated that in other embodiments, weight system 100 may comprise a one-piece or a two-piece structure in which two or more of first weight portion 104, second weight portion 106, and third weight portion 108 are integral components. For example, weight system 100 may be a one-piece structure in which first weight portion 104, second weight portion 106, and third weight portion 108 are a single, integral component. Moreover, weight system 100 may be a two-piece structure in which one of first weight portion 104 or second weight portion 106 is an integral component with third weight portion 108. In such embodiments, weight system 100 may achieve a desired weight distribution by varying the weights of first weight portion 104, second weight portion 106, and third weight portion 108.

[0022] As shown in FIG. 1, in some embodiments, weight system 100 may further comprise a resilient layer including a first resilient portion 114, a second resilient portion 116, and a third resilient portion 118. The resilient layer comprising first resilient portion 114, second resilient portion 116, and third resilient portion 118 may serve as an interface between the golf club head and first weight portion 104, second weight portion 106, and third weight portion 108. The resilient layer may improve the sound of the club while also helping to make a tight seal when weight system 100 is coupled to the golf club head (e.g., weight system 100 is inserted into and engages a corresponding port of the golf club head). It should be appreciated that resilient portions 114, 116, 118 may comprise rubber or any other suitable resilient material.

[0023] In some embodiments, one or both of first weight portion 104 and second weight portion 106 may include an elongated arrangement. As shown in FIG. 1, first weight portion 104 may include an elongated shape having a length and a width, and second weight portion 106 may include an elongated shape having a length and a width. The length of first weight portion 104 may be greater than the width of first weight portion 104, and the length of second weight portion 106 may be greater than the width of second weight portion 106. It should be appreciated that in some embodiments, the length and / or the width of first weight portion 104 may be substantially the same as the length and / or the width of second weight portion 106. [0024] As shown in FIG. 1, in some embodiments, third weight portion 108 may be positioned between first weight portion 104 and second weight portion 106. Third weight portion 108 may include a first side and a second side opposite the first side. First weight portion 104 may be coupled to and extend from the first side of third weight portion 108, and second weight portion 106 may be coupled to and extend from the second side of third weight portion 108.

[0025] The weight system of the present disclosure may further include one or more fastening mechanisms to couple the components of the weight system together and to secure the weight system to a golf club head. For example, and as shown in FIG. 1, in some embodiments, weight system 100 may include a first fastening member 102, a second fastening member 110, and a third fastening member 112. First fastening member 102 may releasably secure the assembled weight system 100 onto a golf club head. Second fastening member 110 and third fastening member 112 may engage and couple together first weight portion 104, second weight portion 106, and third weight portion 108. In some embodiments, second fastening member 110 may releasably secure first weight portion 104 to third weight portion 108, and third fastening member 112 may releasably secure second weight portion 106 to third weight portion 108.

[0026] In some embodiments, third weight portion 108 may include a central hole or aperture configured to receive first fastening member 102 to releasably secure the assembled weight system 100 to the golf club head. In some embodiments, first fastening member 102 may be received through the central hole or aperture of third weight portion 108 and may engage a threaded hole or port disposed on the golf club head to releasably secure the weight system 100 thereto. In some embodiments, second fastening member 110 and third fastening member 112 may be received through apertures or holes in third weight portion 108 and may be releasably fastened within threaded holes disposed in first weight portion 104 and second weight portion 106, respectively.

[0027] As discussed above, the weight system of the present disclosure may be configured to be releasably secured to a golf club head, and components of the weight system, including, for example, the first, second, and third weight portions, may be configured to be releasably secured to each other. Releasably securing the weight system to the golf club head allows for intentional removal and reattachment of the weight system without damaging the golf club head or components of the weight system and provides modularity in readily switching and securing weight systems that may vary in desired features, such as total weight, weight distribution, densities, and materials. Releasably securing components of the weight system, including, the first, second, and third weight portions the weight system may also allow for intentional removal and reattachment of the weight system components without damaging the components and provides modularity in readily switching and securing together various first, second, and / or third weight portions to achieve desired features for the weight system, such as total weight, weight distribution, densities, and materials. Releasably securing the weight system to the golf club head, as well as releasably securing components of the weight system, may be achieved through mechanical fastening members that provide a secure connection when engaged but can be readily disengaged as desired. For example, and as shown in FIG. 1, in some embodiments, any one of or any combination of first fastening member 102, second fastening member 110, or third fastening member 112 may include threaded fastening members or threaded fasteners, such as a screw. Releasably securing components of the weight system, and releasably securing the assembled weight system to the golf club head, may provide additional advantages, including, for example, modular versatility, fine-tuning adjustability, ease of maintenance, customization of materials, and convenient portability.

[0028] As shown in FIG. 1, in some embodiments, third weight portion 108 may include a first arm disposed on the first side of third weight portion 108 and a second arm disposed on the second side of third weight portion 108. The first arm of third weight portion 108 may be releasably secured to first weight portion 104, and the second arm of third weight portion 108 may be releasably secured to second weight portion 106. As shown in FIG. 1, for example, second fastening member 110 and third fastening member 112 may be received through apertures or holes disposed on the first arm and the second arm of third weight portion 108 and may be releasably fastened within threaded holes disposed in first weight portion 104 and second weight portion 106, respectively.

With reference to FIG. 6, similar to weight system 100, an exemplary weight system 600 of the present disclosure may comprise a first weight portion 602, a second weight portion 606, and a third weight portion 604. A first arm of third weight portion 604 may be received in a first channel 610 of first weight portion 602, and a second arm of third weight portion 604 may be received in a second channel 612 of second weight portion 606. Moreover, with reference to FIG. 7, similar to weight system 100, an exemplary weight system 700 of the present disclosure may comprise a first weight portion 702, a second weight portion 706, and a third weight portion 704. A first arm of third weight portion 704 may be received in a first channel 710 of first weight portion 702, and a second arm of third weight portion 704 may be received in a second channel 712 of second weight portion 706. As shown in FIGS. 1, 3, 6, and 7, the channels of the first weight portion and the second weight portion may be disposed on the underside of the first and second weight portions, which may be the surface of the first and second weight portions that faces the golf club head when releasably secured thereto.

[0030] In some embodiments, the weight system of the present disclosure may include a locking mechanism configured to further secure together components of the weight system or the weight system to the golf club head. For example, and with reference to FIG. 1, a locking mechanism, such as a star washer, lock washer, or disc, may be positioned between first fastening member 102 and third weight portion 108. In some embodiments, the central hole or aperture of third weight portion 108 may include a seat configured to receive and position the locking mechanism against third weight portion 108 when third weight portion 108 is engaged with first fastening member 102. Additionally, and / or alternatively, it should be appreciated that one or more locking mechanisms may be positioned at any other suitable location, including, for example, on a surface of third weight portion 108 facing the golf club head, between third weight portion 108 and first weight portion 104, and / or between third weight portion 108 and second weight portion 106. The locking mechanism may further securely engage together first fastening member 102 and first, second, and third weight portions 104, 106, 108 to the golf club head, and may prevent slippage, rotational movement, and rattling of the components of weight system 100. Moreover, the locking member may allow for the weight system to readily lift out of a port on the golf club head, which may prevent the weight system from getting stuck inside the port.

[0031] The weight system of the present disclosure may provide the ability to adapt to a desired total weight and distribution along the system by adjusting the weight and / or density of one or more of the first weight portion, the second weight portion, and the third weight portion. FIG. 2 illustrates different weight distributions of a weight system for a golf club head, consistent with disclosed embodiments. Similar to weight system 100, a weight system 200 may include a first weight portion 204, a second weight portion 208, and a third weight portion 206. In some embodiments, weight system 200 may include three components with substantially equally distributed weight. That is, each of the first, second, and third weight portions 204, 208, 206 may include substantially the same weight and / or density.

[0032] Moreover, as shown in FIG. 2, a weight system 202 may include a first weight portion 210, a second weight portion 214, and a third weight portion 212, similar to weight system 100. In some embodiments, weight system 202 may include three components with varying distributed weight. That is, one or more of the first, second, and third weight portions 210, 214, 212 may include a weight and / or density greater than the other(s).

Furthermore, in some embodiments, the weight system of the present disclosure may include an indicator to identify a particular weight distribution and / or bias. For example, as shown in FIG. 2, weight system 202 may include a graphic, such as a plus sign, on second weight portion 214, signaling the side of weight system 202 having a heavier weight relative to the rest of weight system 202.

Such weight options may include an atypical progression because 25 grams is the standard preinstalled weight to achieve a standard overall weight for a golf club head. The weight system of the present disclosure may provide for readily adjusting the total weight of the system (e.g., moving up or down) by 4-gram increments. In one embodiment, for example, adjusting the total weight by 4 grams from 25 grams may facilitate achieving a desired swing weight because 4 grams is proportional to two swing weights.

It should be appreciated, however, that weight pocket 608 may be positioned at any other suitable location of first weight portion 602 to achieve a desired total weight and / or distribution of first weight portion 602.

As shown in FIG. 7, weight system 700 includes weight pockets 708, 712 with uneven depths other dimensions (e.g., length or width) to achieve the desired weights for first weight portion 702 and second weight portion 706. For example, the depth of first weight pocket 708 may be greater than the depth of second weight pocket 714. As a result, the weight of second weight portion 706 may be greater than the weight of first weight portion 702. In other embodiments, the weight system may include weight pockets with equal depths and / or dimensions, which may result in a weight of first weight portion 702 being substantially the same as a weight of second weight portion 706.

As shown in FIG. 9, golf club head 900 comprises a club body including a face portion, a back portion, a sole portion, a heel portion, and a toe portion. The weight system may be releasably secured in port 902 of the golf club head 900. In a first arrangement, and as shown in FIG. 9, the weight system may include a distribution of weight biased (i.e., heavier) toward the toe portion of the golf club head 900 by having the heavier first weight portion 904 (as indicated by graphic 910 on first weight portion 904) proximate the toe portion. In another arrangement, the weight system may disengaged and then secured in port 902 of the golf club head 900 in the opposite direction, such that more weight is biased toward the heel portion of the golf club head 900 by having the heavier first weight portion 904 positioned in the port 902 proximate to the heel portion. As shown in FIG. 9, the weight system may be releasably secured to the back portion of the golf club head body. It should be appreciated, however, that in some embodiments, the weight system may be releasably secured to other portions of golf club head 900, including, for example, the sole portion.

[0044] The weight system of the present disclosure may improve a player’s delivery of the golf club head to the ball while also helping to promote various flight path biases. Some players may be steep in their delivery while others may be shallow. By placing the weight system into the port of the golf club head in a configuration with an appropriate weight biasing, a player may continue to swing their natural swing but make improved contact and have improved ball flight based on the desired distribution of weight. Additionally, the appropriate placement and configuration of the weight system into a golf club head port may allow for desired shifts in center of gravity values, which, for example, may be beneficial for players who have tendencies to hit balls off the toe or heel.

Claims

1. A weight system, comprising: a first elongated weight portion; a second elongated weight portion; a third weight portion positioned between the first and second elongated weight portions, wherein the first elongated weight portion is coupled to the third weight portion on a first side of the third weight portion, and the second elongated weight portion is coupled to the third weight portion on a second side of the third weight portion; anda first fastening member configured to releasably secure the weight system to a golf club head.

2. The weight system of claim 1, wherein the first elongated weight portion includes a first weight, the second elongated weight portion includes a second weight, and the third weight portion includes a third weight, wherein the first, second, and third weights are substantially equal.

3. The weight system of claim 1, wherein the first elongated weight portion includes a first weight, the second elongated weight portion includes a second weight, and the third weight portion includes a third weight, wherein the third weight is greater than the first weight and the second weight.

4. The weight system of claim 1, wherein the first elongated weight portion includes a first weight, the second elongated weight portion includes a second weight, and the third weight portion includes a third weight, wherein the third weight is less than the first weight and the second weight.

5. The weight system of claim 1, wherein the first elongated weight portion includes a first weight, the second elongated weight portion includes a second weight, and the third weight portion includes a third weight, wherein the first weight is greater than the second weight, and the third weight is less than the second weight.

6. The weight system of claim 1, wherein the first elongated weight portion includes a first weight, the second elongated weight portion includes a second weight, and the third weight portion includes a third weight, wherein the first weight is greater than the second weight and the third weight, and the third weight greater than the second weight.

7. The weight system of claim 1, wherein the third weight portion includes an aperture configured to receive the fastening member to releasably secure the weight system to the golf club head.

8. The weight system of claim 1, wherein the third weight portion includes a first arm releasably secured to the first elongated weight portion, and a second arm releasably secured to the second elongated weight portion.

9. The weight system of claim 8, wherein the first elongated weight portion includes a first channel on a first surface facing the golf club head and configured to receive the first arm of the third weight portion, and the second elongated weight portion includes a second channel on a second surface facing the golf club head and configured to receive the second arm of the third weight portion.

10. The weight system of claim 8, further comprising a second fastening member configured to releasably secure the first arm of the third weight portion to the first elongated weight portion, and a third fastening member configured to releasably secure the second arm of the third weight portion to the second elongated weight portion.

11. The weight system of claim 1, wherein at least one of the first elongated weight portion and the second elongated weight portion includes a pocket on a surface facing the golf club head.

12. The weight system of claim 1, wherein the first elongated weight portion includes a first pocket having a first pocket depth, a first pocket width, and a first pocket length, and the second elongated weight portion includes a second pocket having a second pocket depth, a second pocket width, and a second pocket length.

13. The weight system of claim 12, wherein the first pocket depth is greater than the second pocket depth, and a weight of the first elongated weight portion is less than a weight of the second elongated weight portion.

14. The weight system of claim 12, wherein the first pocket length is greater than the second pocket length, and a weight of the first elongated weight portion is less than a weight of the second elongated weight portion.

15. The weight system of claim 12, wherein the first pocket width is greater than the second pocket width, and a weight of the first elongated weight portion is less than a weight of the second elongated weight portion.

16. A weight system, comprising: a first weight portion including a first side and a second side;a second weight portion extending from the first side of the first weight portion; anda third weight portion extending from the second side of the first weight portion, wherein a weight of the third weight portion is greater than a weight of the second weight portion;wherein the weight system is configured to releasably engage to a golf club head.

17. The weight system of claim 16, wherein a length of the second weight portion is greater than a width of the second weight portion, and a length of the third weight portion is greater than a width of the third weight portion.

18. The weight system of claim 16, wherein the first weight portion includes an aperture, and further comprising a threaded fastener received through the aperture and configured to releasably secure the weight system to the golf club head.

19. A golf club head, comprising: a club body including a face portion, a back portion, a sole portion, a heel portion, and a toe portion; and a weight system including: a first weight portion having a first weight, a first length, and a first width, wherein the first length is greater than the first width; a second weight portion having a second weight, a second length, and a second width, wherein the second length is greater than the second width, and wherein the second weight of the second weight portion is greater than the first weight of the first weight portion; and a third weight portion including a first side coupled to the first weight and a second side coupled to the second weight; wherein the weight system is configured to releasably engage to the club body such that: in a first arrangement, the weight system is secured to the club body with the second weight portion positioned proximate the toe portion of the club body; and in a second arrangement, the weight system is secured to the club body with the second weight portion positioned proximate the heel portion of the club body.

20. The golf club head of claim 19, wherein the weight system is releasably engaged to the back portion of the club body.
