[0002] This disclosure relates to a cooling system, and in particular to a cooling system using water as a refrigerant.BACKGROUND

[0003] In a data centre, servers and other computational equipment can generate a large amount of heat, and typically need to be cooled to prevent overheating. This is important because many industries rely on data centres to operate reliably at all times without interruption. For example, data centres can serve as part of the critical infrastructure of airports, banks, and hospitals, for which even short interruptions are unacceptable. As such, it is necessary for a data centre to maintain efficiency, guarantee data integrity, and uphold the trust of customers through providing continuous operation. In data centres, as well as other settings, a cooling system can remove excess heat from the servers and the surrounding air in order to provide cooling. This helps regulate the environment in which the servers are housed and therefore helps maintain their continuous, efficient operation.

[0004] A computer room air conditioner (CRAC) system is typically configured to cool warm air blown over a coil filled with refrigerant, with a compressor compressing the refrigerant and pumping it through the coil. While different types of refrigerants can be used in such systems, use of some refrigerants is increasingly undesirable due to environmental concerns and associated regulation and costs. Moreover, some natural refrigerants such as carbon dioxide (CO2) operate at high pressure and some natural refrigerants such as propane and ammonia are flammable. In addition, ammonia is toxic. These issues can impose additional engineering requirements, increase costs and reduce reliability and safety.

[0005] Use of water (also known as R718) is known in some cooling systems. However, the high boiling point of water at atmospheric pressure of 100° C. may make it less undesirable for use in a two-phase (e.g., liquid and gas) cooling system, while single-phase cooling systems provide lower efficiency than two-phase cooling systems. Moreover, use of water to cool computational equipment may cause damage or safety concerns in the case of a leak of the water. These issues have limited the use of water as a refrigerant in various cooling systems.

[0006] It would be desirable to provide a cooling system capable of operating with more environmentally friendly refrigerants. It would also be desirable to provide safer, more reliable and more efficient operation of a cooling system.

[0016] The present disclosure provides a cooling system including a compressor, a condenser coupled to the compressor, a valve coupled to the condenser, and a cooling component coupled to the valve and to the compressor. The cooling system also includes at least one conduit configured to transport refrigerant between the compressor, the condenser, the valve, and the cooling component in a refrigerant circuit. The refrigerant includes water at sub-atmospheric pressure.

The use of the water at sub-atmospheric pressure enables implementation of a two-phase cooling system at lower temperatures that may be safer and easier to accommodate from an engineering perspective. [0019] FIG. 1 depicts an example cooling system 100 according to the present disclosure. The cooling system 100 is configured to cool a surrounding or adjacent area, for example a server room of a data centre including computational equipment supported on racks. While a single circuit cooling system is depicted in FIG. 1, the present disclosure is not limited thereto and encompasses multi circuit cooling systems. The cooling system 100 may be described as a computer room air conditioner (CRAC) system.

[0020] The cooling system 100 includes a compressor 102. The compressor is configured to increase the pressure of refrigerant passing therethrough and transfer it to a condenser 104 (described below). The compressor 102 may be a centrifugal compressor, which may be configured to accelerate the refrigerant through one or more impellers in order to convert kinetic energy into potential energy and thereby increase the pressure of the refrigerant. In the compressor, the refrigerant may be in the form of gas. As will be appreciated by the skilled person, any suitable form of compressor may be used, including reciprocal compressors, rotary vane compressors, scroll compressors, screw compressors, etc.

[0021] The cooling system 100 includes a condenser 104 coupled to the compressor 102. The condenser is configured to receive the refrigerant from the compressor 102 and to cool the refrigerant until the refrigerant condensates (i.e., changes state from gas to liquid). The condenser 104 may be a brazed plate condenser, which may also be described as a brazed plate heat exchanger. The brazed plate condenser may include channels through which the (relatively warm) refrigerant can flow and channels through which a second (relatively cool) fluid can flow without mixing with the refrigerant. Heat from the refrigerant can thereby be transferred from the refrigerant to the second fluid in order to cool and condense the refrigerant and warm the second fluid. The block arrows in FIG. 1 indicate pipes or conduits that may be used to transport this second fluid into and out of the condenser 104. The heat of the second fluid may be recovered and used, e.g., for heating a building. As will be appreciated by the skilled person, any suitable form of condenser may be used, including air-cooled, water-cooled, evaporative, and hybrid condensers.

[0022] The cooling system 100 includes a valve 106 coupled to the condenser 104. The valve 106 may also be or may also be described as an expansion valve, an electronic expansion valve (EEV), an injector, or an ejector. The valve 106 is configured to receive the refrigerant from the condenser 104 and to feed the refrigerant to a cooling component 108 (described below). The valve 106 may be configured to control the amount of refrigerant that flows to the evaporator 108 and may be configured to control or affect the pressure of the refrigerant in the cooling system 100. The valve 106 may be configured to limit pressure drop in order to provide capacity regulation.

[0023] The cooling system 100 includes a cooling component 108 coupled to the valve 106 and to the compressor 102. The cooling component 108 may be configured to provide cooling to one or more features of the surroundings of the cooling system 100 or the cooling component 108, for example to the surrounding air or to computational equipment of the data centre. The cooling component 108 may be configured to receive refrigerant from the valve 106 and to transfer refrigerant towards the compressor 102.

Any suitable form of evaporator 108 may be used, such as evaporators including fins, plates, shells, microchannels, and / or tubes. The evaporator 108 may be an air-cooled evaporator, which may avoid the need for additional features of water-cooled evaporators such as heat pumps or chilled water coils. In chiller implementations, water is cooled, and then the cooled water can be used to cool the surroundings. This double heat exchange may be less efficient than desired. In contrast, in the arrangement of FIG. 1, the evaporator 108 can provide direct heat exchange between the refrigerant and the air, enabling more efficient cooling to be provided.

[0025] The evaporator 108 may be configured to cool air passed over the evaporator 108 using the refrigerant. A fan 110 may be directed towards the evaporator 108 and may be configured to direct warm air over the evaporator 108. As the warm air passes over the evaporator 108, the cool refrigerant flowing through the evaporator 108 may cool the air through heat exchange, without mixing of the refrigerant and the air. The cooled air may be recirculated around the data centre to absorb further heat. The warming of the refrigerant may cause the refrigerant to evaporate. This evaporated refrigerant may be sucked back towards the compressor 102 for the cycle described above to begin again. The evaporator 108 and the fan 110 may be contained within a housing 112, providing these components within a single integrated unit easily connectable to the rest of the cooling system 100.

[0026] While the cooling system 100 is depicted schematically in FIG. 1, in practice the distance between the compressor 102 and the cooling component / evaporator 108 may be minimised in view of the internal pressure drop of the refrigerant. The length of the at least one conduit 114 between the compressor 102 and the cooling component / evaporator 108 may be minimised to achieve this, which may also enable a more compact cooling system 100 to be provided. Water is a very low pressure refrigerant, with a very small difference between evaporating and condensing pressures. Small changes in pressure can change the equivalent saturated temperature and can cause a reduction in efficiency. Therefore, the compressor 102 and the cooling component / evaporator 108 may be located adjacent to each other in order to improve the efficiency of the cooling system 100.

[0027] The cooling system 100 includes at least one conduit 114 configured to transport the refrigerant between the compressor 102, the condenser 104, the valve 106, and the evaporator 108 in a refrigerant circuit. The flow of the refrigerant around the refrigerant circuit through the at least one conduit 114 is generally depicted in FIG. 1 with straight line arrows. The refrigerant may generally flow in an anti-clockwise direction in the depiction of FIG. 1. These conduits may be formed of separate components to collectively form the at least one conduit 114 or may be one substantially continuous conduit.

The cooling system 100, and the at least one conduit 114 thereof, may be configured to transport the water refrigerant between the components of the cooling system 100 at sub-atmospheric pressure. The cooling system 100, and the at least one conduit 114 thereof, may be configured to be able to contain the refrigerant at sub-atmospheric pressure without being deformed, i.e., being made thick / strong / rigid enough to withstand the forces corresponding to the negative pressure of the refrigerant relative to the surroundings.

[0030] The use of water at sub-atmospheric pressure as the refrigerant is distributed through the cooling system 100 enables the combined benefits associated with use of water as a safe and environmentally friendly refrigerant while avoiding the need for high temperature operation and providing the efficiency gains associated with two-phase systems. Moreover, since the water is held at sub-atmospheric pressure, the cooling system 100 is inherently predisposed to prevent leakage of the water refrigerant since the negative pressure relative to the external environment acts to hold the water within the refrigerant circuit and avoid it being released and contacting nearby computational equipment. This increases the safety and reliability of the cooling system 100 and reduces maintenance associated with leaks as well as requirements relating to leak tests.

[0031] The cooling system 100 advantageously enables the flexibility and precision cooling of a direct expansion system versus a centralised chilled water application. Moreover, the cooling system may be particularly suitable for small applications, i.e., where the cooling system 100 and the region to be cooled are relatively small. Regulations limit the use of fluorinated gas refrigerants to those with relatively low global warming potential, and there is the potential for widespread refrigerants such as per-and poly fluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) to be banned for altogether for related reasons. The use of water as a refrigerant as described herein can therefore provide a suitable solution as a natural refrigerant.

[0032] The cooling system 100 may be configured to detect the presence of any no-condensate / non-condensable gases and purge them in order to provide more reliable operation. For example, a vacuum pump may be coupled to the condenser 104 via a pipeline or conduit. A gas trap or reservoir for storing the non-condensable gases may be coupled to the pipeline or conduit or to the vacuum pump. The vacuum pump may be configured to evacuate any non-condensable gages from the condenser 104 via the pipeline or conduit in order to maintain efficient operation of the condenser 104.

1. A cooling system comprising:a compressor;a condenser coupled to the compressor;a valve coupled to the condenser;a cooling component coupled to the valve and to the compressor; andat least one conduit configured to transport refrigerant between the compressor, the condenser, the valve, and the cooling component in a refrigerant circuit, wherein the refrigerant comprises water at sub-atmospheric pressure.

2. The cooling system according to claim 1, wherein the cooling component comprises an evaporator configured to cool air passed over the evaporator using the refrigerant.

3. The cooling system according to claim 2, wherein the evaporator is an air-cooled evaporator.

4. The cooling system according to claim 2, comprising:a fan configured to direct the air over the evaporator.

5. The cooling system according to claim 1, wherein the cooling component comprises a structural feature of a rack for supporting computational equipment, the structural feature and the refrigerant circuit being arranged for the refrigerant to cool the structural feature.

6. The cooling system according to claim 5, wherein the structural feature comprises at least one of a door, a panel, or a cold plate of the rack.

7. The cooling system according to claim 1, further comprising:a liquid separator including an internal heat exchanger, the liquid separator being coupled to the at least one conduit.

8. The cooling system according to claim 7, wherein the liquid separator comprises a first inlet coupled to the valve, a first outlet coupled to the cooling component via a pump of the cooling system, a second inlet coupled to the cooling component, and a second outlet coupled to the compressor.

9. The cooling system according to claim 1, wherein the cooling component comprises a thermal wall, the thermal wall comprising an integrated fan and evaporator.

10. The cooling system according to claim 1, wherein the refrigerant circuit comprises water in liquid phase in a first part of the refrigerant circuit and water in gas phase in a second part of the refrigerant circuit.

11. The cooling system according to claim 1, wherein the condenser is a brazed plate condenser.

12. The cooling system according to claim 1, wherein the valve comprises at least one of an electronic expansion valve, an injector, or an ejector.

13. The cooling system according to claim 1, wherein the compressor is a centrifugal compressor.

14. The cooling system according to claim 1, wherein the cooling component is a computer room air conditioner, CRAC, unit.

15. The cooling system according to claim 1, further comprising:a controller configured to transmit a control signal to the valve to control at least one of a flow of the refrigerant therethrough a pressure of the refrigerant in the refrigerant circuit.
