A lighting system for an aerosol-generating system is provided, the lighting system including: a plurality of light emitting elements; a first set of a plurality of lighting areas, each one of the lighting areas being spatially separated from the other lighting areas, each one of the lighting areas including one or more of the plurality of light emitting elements, and the first set of lighting areas being arranged relative to each other to collectively define a number eight; and control electronics coupled to the plurality of light emitting elements and configured to selectively activate each one of the plurality of lighting areas, a second set of one or more lighting areas being arranged to partially or wholly surround the first set, the control electronics being further configured to selectively activate each of the first and the second sets to generate respective first and second light emissions.
