[0049] Articles of footwear including shoes, sandals, and other foot coverings are intended to protect and comfort a person's foot. Many existing shoes and sandals includes coverings that enclose the foot near a person's toes or include straps that engage the foot near a person's toes and / or along a midfoot region to secure the footwear in position and to prevent the shoe and / or sandal from falling off when worn. These enclosures and / or engaging features can improve protection of various parts of the user's foot. However, in some instances, these features can over constrain the foot which can be detrimental to a user's posture and foot health.
[0050] Embodiments of the present disclosure relate to articles of footwear that support a user's toes in an open position and enable adjustment of the amount of toe separation during use. In some embodiments, the articles of footwear (e.g., shoes, sandals, etc.) include a strap system that is configured to enable a user to control an amount of toe separation. For example, the strap system may be configured to engage a user's innermost and outermost toes to pull the toes apart. The strap system may also include an adjustment mechanism that can be manipulated by a user to adjust the amount of toe separation provided to a user (e.g., a distance between the innermost and outermost toes, a force that pulls the user's toes apart, etc.). In some embodiments, the article of footwear also includes a tapered sole design, which can provide greater clearance for toe separation and support the user's foot in a healthier position.
[0051] The articles of footwear (e.g., sandals, shoes, etc.) described herein are configured to facilitate realignment of the toes and user's body to a more balanced posture. The articles of footwear described herein can improve a user's foot heath and can enhance foot function. For example, by increasing toe separation, the articles of footwear can improve foot stability by providing a wider contact area across the user's feet. Increased toe spread can also increase overall body alignment, such as the alignment between a user's knees and their feet (straighter legs, etc.) when standing. The improvements to stability and body alignment resulting from the user of various articles of footwear described herein can also improve a user's balance and agility during exercise and sporting events. Additionally, and as noted above, the footwear designs described herein can also improve circulation through the feet as well as the strength of the foot muscles, which can reduce the risk of health conditions such as plantar fasciitis and bunions.
[0052] Referring to FIGS. 1-2, an article of footwear, shown as a sandal 100, is shown that is configured to support a user's toes 12 and to facilitate toe separation during use. The sandal 100 is an open foot covering that protects a bottom of the user's foot 10 from a ground surface while exposing a portion of the user's foot 10 and toes 12 to the environment surrounding the sandal 100. In other embodiments, the article of footwear may be a shoe, a boot, or another enclosed or partially enclosed foot covering that at least partially separates a user's foot 10 from the surrounding environment. It should be understood that various types of foot coverings, enclosures, and / or supports may be incorporated in combination with other features of the footwear designs described herein. Such coverings can provide different aesthetics to the footwear and can also enable use of the footwear in various climates and applications.

The toe separation system 104 is coupled to the sole 102 adjacent to a region of the sole 102 that is configured to support a user's toes 12. The sandal 100 also includes a covering 106 that is coupled to the sole 102. The covering 106 is configured to secure the user's foot 10 to the sole 102, and to prevent significant flexion of the foot 10 relative to the sole 102, as will be further described.

The tapered arrangement of the sole 102 forms a triangular shape when viewed from above the footbed 112 (e.g., normal to the first direction 114 and the second direction 116) that consists of only three corner regions 128 (e.g., curved edges, etc.). The triangular shape substantially matches the outer profile of a healthy foot when viewed from above.

The toe separation system 104 engages the sole 102 at the toe separation system support 130 and is disposed adjacent to the forefoot region 118. The toe separation system support 130 includes an innermost toe connector 146, an outermost toe connector 148, and an adjustment mechanism 150 that is configured to adjust a toe separation distance 14 (see FIG. 2) between the innermost toe connector 146 and the outermost toe connector 148 (see also FIG. 2). Although described herein a an “innermost toe connector” and an “outermost toe connector,” it should be understood that the innermost toe connector may be applied to any first of a user's foot and that the outermost toe connector may be applied any second toe of a user's foot that is different from the first toe, and that the terms “innermost” and “outermost” encompass these various arrangements and should not be considered limiting. For example, in various embodiments, the innermost toe may be an innermost functioning toe of a user's foot (e.g., an innermost toe that is able to bear a lateral load applied to the toe, etc.), and the outermost toe may be an outermost functioning toe. As used herein, the toe separation distance 14 refers to a distance between at least two toes and, in particular, a distance between a center of the user's innermost toe and the user's outermost toe in the second direction 116. In other embodiments, the toe separation system 104 may include additional, fewer, and / or different components.

The ring may be made from silicone, soft plastic, rubber, or another type of material that facilitates gripping of the user's toe(s).

Claims
1. An article of footwear, comprising:a sole defining a footbed, the footbed comprising:a forefoot region;a hindfoot region; anda midfoot region extending between the forefoot region and the hindfoot region; anda toe separation system engaging the sole and disposed adjacent to the forefoot region, the toe separation system comprising:an innermost toe connector;an outermost toe connector; andan adjustment mechanism configured to adjust a toe separation distance between the outermost toe connector and the innermost toe connector.
2. The article of footwear of claim 1, wherein each width of footbed across the forefoot region is greater than each width of the footbed across each of the hindfoot region and the midfoot region.
3. The article of footwear of claim 1, wherein a width of the footbed increases continuously from the hindfoot region through the midfoot region and to the forefoot region.
4. The article of footwear of claim 1, wherein the sole has a triangular shape when viewed from above that defines only three corner regions.
5. The article of footwear of claim 1, wherein the toe separation system includes at least one strap, the innermost toe connector is a first loop of the at least one strap that is configured to wrap around a person's innermost toe, and wherein the outermost toe connector is a second loop of the at least one strap that is configured to wrap around a person's outermost toe.
6. The article of footwear of claim 1, wherein the sole defines a strap opening that extends therethrough, the toe separation system including at least one strap, the innermost toe connector disposed at an end of the at least one strap, the at least one strap extending through the strap opening.
7. The article of footwear of claim 6, wherein the sole includes:an insole that defines the footbed; andan outsole that is coupled to the insole, the outsole configured to contact a ground surface, wherein the strap opening is a channel that extends in a width direction through the outsole.
8. The article of footwear of claim 1, wherein the toe separation system further includes a strap including a connector, and wherein the adjustment mechanism includes a plurality of mounting studs on a side of the sole, the connector configured to couple to any one of the mounting studs to set the toe separation distance.
9. The article of footwear of claim 8, wherein the toe separation system further comprises a cleat disposed on a side of the sole in the forefoot region, the cleat coupling the strap to the sole and configured to allow relative movement between the strap and the sole along a first direction along a first portion of the strap and along a second direction along a second portion of the strap that is substantially normal to the first direction.
10. The article of footwear of claim 1, further comprising a covering coupled to the sole, the covering extending over at least a portion of the midfoot region of the footbed.
11. The article of footwear of claim 1, wherein the toe separation system includes at least one strap, and wherein the adjustment mechanism includes a hook and loop fastener that extends along at least two portions of the at least one strap.
12. A sole for an article of footwear, the sole defining a footbed, the footbed comprising:a forefoot region;a hindfoot region; anda midfoot region extending between the forefoot region and the hindfoot region, wherein each width of footbed across the forefoot region is greater than each width of the footbed across each of the hindfoot region and the midfoot region. the sole further comprising:a toe separation system support coupled to the footbed adjacent to the forefoot region, the toe separation system support configured to support a toe separation system at least partially within the forefoot region.
13. The sole of claim 12, wherein the width of the footbed increases continuously from the hindfoot region through the midfoot region and to the forefoot region.
14. The sole of claim 12, wherein the footbed has a triangular shape when viewed from above that defines only three corner regions.
15. The sole of claim 12, wherein the sole defines a strap opening that extends therethrough adjacent to the forefoot region.
16. The sole of claim 15, further comprising:an insole that defines the footbed; andan outsole that is coupled to the insole, the outsole configured to contact a ground surface, wherein the strap opening is a channel that extends in a width direction through the outsole.
17. The sole of claim 12, wherein the toe separation system support comprises a pair of strap towers that extend from the footbed and are disposed on opposing sides of the forefoot region, the pair of strap towers configured to support a portion of at least one strap above the footbed.
18. The sole of claim 12, wherein the toe separation system support comprises a cleat disposed on a side of the sole in the forefoot region, the cleat configured to couple a strap to the sole and configured to allow relative movement between the strap and the sole along a first direction along a first portion of the strap and along a second direction along a second portion of the strap that is substantially normal to the first direction.
19. A method of making and / or using an article of footwear, comprising:forming a sole that defines a footbed, the footbed comprising:a forefoot region;a hindfoot region; anda midfoot region extending between the forefoot region and the hindfoot region; andengaging a toe separation system with the sole adjacent to the forefoot region, the toe separation system comprising:an innermost toe connector;an outermost toe connector; andan adjustment mechanism configured to adjust a toe separation distance between the innermost toe connector and the outermost toe connector.
20. The method of claim 19, further comprising:engaging the innermost toe connector of the toe separation system with an innermost toe;engaging the outermost toe connector of the toe separation system with an outermost toe; andadjusting, by using the adjustment mechanism, the toe separation distance between the innermost toe connector and the outermost toe connector.
