AI Technical Summary

Technical Problem

The installation or removal of permanent magnet motors in electrical submersible pumps (ESPs) in oil and gas wells can cause safety hazards due to the rotation of the motor, generating electrical power that is transmitted to the surface, as the wellbore equalizes pressure during these processes.

Method used

An artificial lift assembly with a sleeve system that includes a sliding sleeve and a plug, such as a wellbore dart, is used to prevent rotation of the permanent magnet motor by blocking fluid flow until a predetermined pressure is reached, allowing the sleeve to move and enable safe removal of the ESP system from the wellbore.

Benefits of technology

The system effectively prevents the rotation of the permanent magnet motor during installation and removal, thereby eliminating safety hazards associated with electrical energy transmission to the surface.

Abstract

A sleeve system has a sliding sleeve at least partially carried within a ported case. The sliding sleeve blocks fluid flow through ports in the ported case. The sliding sleeve is restricted from movement relative to the ported case until a first predetermined pressure is applied to the sliding sleeve. A plug is introduced to the sliding sleeve so as to block fluid flow through the sliding sleeve, subsequent to introducing the plug, fluid pressure above the plug is increased until the sliding sleeve moves relative to the ported case such that fluid flow is allowed through the ports.
