[0002] The present disclosure relates generally to the field of closures for containers. The present disclosure relates specifically to a closure for a container having a cap and a tab, with the tab maintaining the cap in an open position.SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION
[0003] One embodiment of the invention relates to a closure including a top panel including an upper surface and a lower surface, a rotational axis about which the top panel is centered, a cylindrical wall extending from the lower surface of the top panel, a retention band pivotally coupled to the cylindrical wall, the retention band attached to the cylindrical wall by a plurality of frangible members, the frangible members providing a visual indication, when broken, that the closure has been opened, a first weakened section that separates the cylindrical wall and the retention band, a second weakened section that extends circumferentially with respect to the rotational axis, a plurality of extensions, a first tether and a second tether. The plurality of frangible members extend across the first weakened section and connect the cylindrical wall and the retention band. The first weakened section extends circumferentially with respect to the rotational axis from a first end to a second end that defines a first angle, and the first angle is between 10 and 80 degrees. The second weakened section is distinct from the first weakened section. The second weakened section includes a central portion and lateral portions extending circumferentially away from the central portion, and the lateral portions are further from the top panel than the entirety of the first weakened section, and the central portion is further from the top panel than the lateral portions. The plurality of extensions each extend, from one or more of the central portion and the lateral portions, towards at least one of the top panel and the other extension. The plurality of extensions include a first extension extending towards a first extension end and a second extension extending towards a second extension end. The first extension end and the second extension end define a second angle that is at least 10 degrees and that is less than the first angle. The first tether couples the cylindrical wall to the retention band after the plurality of frangible members are broken, and the first tether extends between one of the lateral portions and the first weakened section. The second tether couples the cylindrical wall to the retention band after the plurality of frangible members are broken, and the second tether extends between the other of the lateral portions and the first weakened section.

[0028] Referring generally to the figures, various embodiments of a closure are shown. Closures are generally used to enclose contents, such as within containers. For example, closures are used to enclose liquids inside liquid-containing containers, such as water bottles. The present application provides a closure with a tether and hinge formation that permits the body of the closure to remain coupled to the container even after the closure is opened.
[0029] In various embodiments, the closure(s) described herein provide a tether structure to couple the closure body to a retaining band, which remains coupled to the container. The closure also includes a tab formation that facilitates users drinking contents from the container. In particular, the tab biases the body of the closure away from the container neck when the closure is opened. Applicant has observed that providing weakened section extensions extending from the lower weakened portion (e.g., a lower slit) as described herein provides improved performance benefits for the closure. For example, the closure can be more easily removed from and reattached to the container neck by virtue of the extensions elevating the upper portion of the container compared to other closures without such extensions.
[0030] Referring to FIGS. 1-12, in an embodiment, various aspects of closure 110 are shown. Closure 110 includes a top panel 114 and a cylindrical wall 122 perpendicular to the top panel 114. Top panel 114 includes an upper surface 116 and an opposing lower surface 118. In various embodiments, closure 110 includes rotational axis 112 about which top panel 114 is centered. Cylindrical wall 122 extends downwardly from lower surface 118 of outer periphery 120 of top panel 114. Cylindrical wall 122 extends away from upper surface 116 of top panel 114. Cylindrical wall 122 includes an inner surface 124 and an opposing outer surface 126, the inner surface 124 facing towards rotational axis 112 and outer surface 126 facing away from rotational axis 112.

[0040] Turning to FIGS. 2-3 in particular, in a specific embodiment second weakened section 160 is formed by a series of portions that extend circumferentially around closure 110 at varying distances from top panel 114. Second weakened section 160 includes a central portion 162 and lateral portions 166 that extend circumferentially away from central portion 162. In various embodiments, the lateral portions 166 are further from the top panel 114 than the entirety of the first weakened section 130, and central portion 162 is further from the top panel 114 than the lateral portions 166. 1. 4. The closure of claim 1, wherein each of the plurality of weakened section extensions extend from the second weakened section at least in part towards the top panel.

The closure of claim 4, wherein each of the plurality of weakened section extensions define a portion of a tab extending away from the top panel towards the retention band, the tab defined by the second weakened section, the tab interfacing against a container neck to bias the top panel away from an opening of the container neck subsequent to the closure being opened.
6. The closure of claim 1, wherein the second angle is at least 20 degrees less than the first angle.

A closure comprising:a top panel including an upper surface and a lower surface;a rotational axis about which the top panel is centered;a cylindrical wall extending from the lower surface of the top panel;a retention band pivotally coupled to the cylindrical wall, the retention band attached to the cylindrical wall by a plurality of frangible members, the frangible members providing a visual indication, when broken, that the closure has been opened;a first weakened section that separates the cylindrical wall and the retention band, wherein the plurality of frangible members extend across the first weakened section and connect the cylindrical wall and the retention band, the first weakened section extending circumferentially with respect to the rotational axis from a first end to a second end that defines a first angle, wherein the first angle is between 10 and 80 degrees;a second weakened section that extends circumferentially with respect to the rotational axis, wherein the second weakened section is distinct from the first weakened section, the second weakened section comprising a central portion and lateral portions extending circumferentially away from the central portion, wherein the lateral portions are further from the top panel than the entirety of the first weakened section, and wherein the central portion is further from the top panel than the lateral portions;a plurality of weakened section extensions that each extend, from one or more of the central portion and the lateral portions, towards at least one of the top panel and the other extension, the plurality of weakened section extensions comprising a first extension extending towards a first extension end and a second extension extending towards a second extension end, wherein at least one of the first extension end and the second extension end is closer to the top panel than the first weakened section;a first tether that couples the cylindrical wall to the retention band after the plurality of frangible members are broken, wherein the first tether extends between one of the lateral portions and the first weakened section; anda second tether that couples the cylindrical wall to the retention band after the plurality of frangible members are broken, wherein the second tether extends between the other of the lateral portions and the first weakened section.
11. The closure of claim 10, wherein each of the plurality of weakened section extensions extend from the second weakened section towards each other from the lateral portions.
12. The closure of claim 11, wherein each of the plurality of weakened section extensions define a portion of a tab extending away from the top panel towards the retention band, the tab defined by the second weakened section, the tab interfacing against a container neck to bias the top panel away from an opening of a container neck subsequent to the closure being opened.
13. The closure of claim 10, wherein each of the first extension end and the second extension end are closer to the top panel than the first weakened section.
14. The closure of claim 10, wherein the first extension end and the second extension end define a second angle that is at least 20 degrees less than the first angle.
15. The closure of claim 10, wherein the first extension end and the second extension end define a second angle that is at least 30 degrees less than the first angle.
16. A closure comprising:a top panel including an upper surface and a lower surface;a rotational axis about which the top panel is centered;a cylindrical wall extending from the lower surface of the top panel;a retention band pivotally coupled to the cylindrical wall, the retention band attached to the cylindrical wall by a plurality of frangible members, the frangible members providing a visual indication, when broken, that the closure has been opened;a first weakened section that separates the cylindrical wall and the retention band, wherein the plurality of frangible members extend across the first weakened section and connect the cylindrical wall and the retention band, the first weakened section extending circumferentially with respect to the rotational axis from a first end to a second end that defines a first angle, wherein the first angle is between 10 and 80 degrees;a second weakened section that extends circumferentially with respect to the rotational axis, wherein the second weakened section is distinct from the first weakened section, the second weakened section comprising a central portion and lateral portions extending circumferentially away from the central portion, wherein the lateral portions are further from the top panel than the entirety of the first weakened section, and wherein the central portion is further from the top panel than the lateral portions;a plurality of weakened section extensions that each extend, from one or more of the central portion and the lateral portions, towards at least one of the top panel and the other weakened section extension, the plurality of weakened section extensions comprising a first extension extending towards a first extension end and a second extension extending towards a second extension end, wherein the first extension end is closer to the top panel than the first end;a first tether that couples the cylindrical wall to the retention band after the plurality of frangible members are broken, wherein the first tether extends between one of the lateral portions and the first weakened section; anda second tether that couples the cylindrical wall to the retention band after the plurality of frangible members are broken, wherein the second tether extends between the other of the lateral portions and the first weakened section.
17. The closure of claim 16, wherein each of the plurality of weakened section extensions extend from the second weakened section towards each other from the lateral portions.
18. The closure of claim 17, wherein each of the plurality of weakened section extensions define a portion of a tab extending away from the top panel towards the retention band, the tab defined by the second weakened section, the tab interfacing against a container neck to bias the top panel away from an opening of a container neck subsequent to the closure being opened.
19. The closure of claim 16, wherein the first extension end and the second extension end define a second angle that is at least 20 degrees less than the first angle.
20. The closure of claim 16, wherein the first extension end and the second extension end define a second angle that is at least 30 degrees less than the first angle.
