[0002] The present invention relates generally to packaging, and more specifically to gift packaging.BACKGROUND
[0003] For many, the process of preparing a gift to be given is a frustrating experience. At least a portion of that frustration is often attributable to the unfun process of assembling a gift box (also sometimes referred to as a shirt box or an apparel box). Due to the construction of a typical gift box, it is often necessary to tape the inside corners of the gift box to prevent the gift box from collapsing in on itself. This additional step requires additional material (e.g., tape), takes additional time, and prevents the gift box from being reused. Further, after a typical gift box is assembled and the gift is placed inside, one must still use wrapping paper (or similar) to wrap the exterior of the box. This can also be frustrating and / or time consuming and can lead to waste (e.g., throwing out all of the paper used to wrap the gift box after the gift box is opened). While some attempts have been made to improve gift boxes, gift givers continue to be frustrated by assembling a typical gift box. To that end, it would be desirable to provide improved gift packaging and / or an improved process for assembling gift packaging.
[0004] In addition to the time consuming process of typical gift wrapping methods and amount of materials required for typical gift wrapping needs, the storage space required for those materials is often not available. This may result in gift wrapping materials being thrown away or wasted. It would be desirable to provide a gift packaging kit that includes all the elements that one would need to “wrap” a gift, thereby eliminating the need for one to accumulate and store gift wrapping supplies, such as wrapping paper, for example. Furthermore, it would be desirable to have a kit that can minimize space taken up by the kit before use, which is advantageous for shipping and for storage. Furthermore, improved gift wrapping methods are desired that greatly reduce the time needed for one to assemble a gift for a special event while also providing a festive and thoughtful outer appearance.SUMMARY
[0005] To these and other ends, in one aspect of the invention a gift packaging kit for preparing a gift item for an occasion is disclosed. The gift packaging kit comprises a gift box, including a first portion and a second portion configured to be assembled together and form an enclosure for receiving the gift item within, the first portion and the second portion each having a collapsed configuration and an assembled configuration; a gift box sleeve that is configured to slide over and at least partially cover an outer surface of the gift box in the assembled state; an envelope configured to be received within a receptacle located on the gift box sleeve; a card, removably receivable within the envelope; a packing material; and a container that is configured to hold the first portion in the collapsed configuration, the second portion in the collapsed configuration, the gift box sleeve in a collapsed state, the envelope, and the packing material in a folded configuration, thereby storing all elements of the gift packaging kit in a flattened, generally planar configuration to minimize space needs for storage or transport of the gift packaging kit.
[0006] In one embodiment, the first portion and the second portion of the gift box each further comprise two first walls and two second walls connected to one another to define corners of the respective first portion and second portion.

The method comprises: lifting a first wall and a second wall of a first portion of the gift box away from an interior of the first portion; lifting a first wall and a second wall of a second portion of the gift box away from an interior of the second portion; aligning a corner tab located on the first wall of the first portion with an interior side of the second wall of the first portion; placing a locking corner located on the corner tab of the first wall of the first portion within a corresponding locking orifice located on the second wall of the first portion such that the locking orifice receives at least a portion of the locking corner and the such that the locking corner passes from an interior of the first portion to an exterior of the first portion, forming an inside corner on the first portion; aligning a corner tab located on the first wall of the second portion with an interior side of the second wall of the second portion; placing a locking corner located on the corner tab of the first wall of the second portion within a corresponding locking orifice located on the second wall of the second portion such that the locking orifice receives at least a portion of the locking corner and the such that the locking corner passes from an interior of the second portion to an exterior of the second portion, forming an inside corner on the second portion; and assembling the first portion with the second portion such that an enclosure for receiving a gift item within is formed.

[0037] In general, the description relates to gift packaging, a gift packaging kit, and methods of assembly thereof. As described above, there are drawbacks or shortcomings of existing gift boxes. Advantageously, aspects of the gift packaging (and gift packaging kit) of the present disclosure, described in greater detail below, address the drawbacks and shortcomings of existing gift boxes. Particularly, the gift box of the gift packaging of the present disclosure includes a corner locking mechanism which eliminates the need for a gift giver to secure the inside corners of the gift box with tape, for example. Further, the gift packaging kit includes everything that one would need to “wrap” a gift in the included gift packaging thereby eliminating the need for one to accumulate and store gift wrapping supplies, such as wrapping paper. Other advantages and technical effects of the embodiments of this invention will become evident to one skilled in the art from the following description.
[0038] Referring now to FIG. 1, the Figure illustrates one embodiment of a gift packaging 10, according to an aspect of the disclosure. As shown, the gift packaging 10 generally includes a gift box 12 arranged within a gift box sleeve 14. The gift box 12 and the gift box sleeve 14 may be made of cardboard or paperboard, for example. In the depicted embodiment, the gift box 12 includes a first gift box portion 16 and a second gift box portion 18 (FIG. 8). The gift box sleeve 14 includes decorative indicia 20. The decorative indicia 20 can be selected to match a particular holiday or other event for which the gift is being given. For example, the decorative indicia 20 in the depicted embodiment is designed for a baby shower. In an alternative embodiment, the decorative indicia 20 may be selected to be appropriate for a graduation, Father's Day, Christmas, or any other known holiday or personal event, for example. Advantageously, the gift box sleeve 14 renders the use of wrapping paper (or similar) to wrap the exterior of the gift box 12 unnecessary. Instead of wrapping the gift box 12, a user simply inserts the gift box 12 into the gift box sleeve 14 that includes decorative indicia 20, specifically after assembling the gift box 12 and inserting a present or gift into the gift box 12.
[0039] Further, as shown in the Figures, the gift box sleeve 14 may include a receptacle 22 for receiving an envelope 24 (i.e., containing a card 26) or other gift-related item such as a gift card, for example. As shown in the depicted embodiment, the receptable 22 may be an opening in the gift box sleeve 14 such that an envelope 24 can at least partially be inserted into the opening to removably secure the envelope 24 to the gift packaging 10. It should be understood that the receptacle 22 may take on other forms. Like the decorative indicia 20 on the gift box sleeve 14, the card 26 (FIG. 4) within the envelope 24 and / or the envelope 24 may be selected to match a particular holiday or other event for which the gift is being given. Further, the card 26 and / or envelope 24 may be selected to match, share elements with, or otherwise be coordinated with the decorative indicia 20 on the gift box sleeve 14.
[0040] Referring now to FIGS. 2-4, the Figures illustrate one embodiment of a gift packaging kit 30, according to an aspect of the disclosure. The gift packaging kit 30 is configured to contain the necessary elements for a gift giver to prepare a gift for presentation to a gift recipient. Advantageously, the gift packaging kit 30 includes the elements that one would need to “wrap” a gift in the included gift packaging 10, thereby eliminating the need for one to accumulate and store gift wrapping supplies, such as wrapping paper, for example. Furthermore, the gift packaging kit 30 is configured to hold all elements of the gift wrapping supplies in a flattened and / or collapsed initial configuration to minimize space taken up by the kit 30 before use, which is advantageous for shipping and for storage. The elements of the gift packaging kit 30 are contained within a gift packaging kit container 32. In the depicted embodiment, the gift packaging kit container 32 is a transparent plastic bag releasably secured closed at one end by an adhesive. It should be understood that the gift packaging kit container 32 could take on other forms. Within the gift packaging kit container 32—as shown in this embodiment-is the gift box sleeve 14, the gift box 12, an envelope 24, a card 26, as well as a packing material 34. Each of the elements included in the gift packaging kit container 32 are initially stored in a collapsed configuration. Strategic folds located on each element allow for them to easily move from a collapsed configuration to a non-collapsed, deployed configuration. For example, the gift box sleeve 14 may further comprise side seams 35 along side edge walls thereof that allow for the gift box sleeve 14 to optionally or preferably fold flat rather than racking to the side along fold lines 64, 66 (the racking to the side as shown in FIG. 2, for comparative example). The side seams 35 may be located on the left and right side edge walls of the gift box sleeve 14 and allow the left and right sides to fold in between the top and bottom walls of the gift box sleeve 14, creating a smaller surface area when the gift box sleeve 14 is in the collapsed configuration, and this is shown in FIG. 4 at the top left (note that the gift packaging kit container 32 can be made smaller in size due to this change when optionally present on the gift box sleeve 14). It should be understood that the gift packaging kit 30 (and thus the gift packaging kit container 32) could contain more or fewer elements than those that are listed. Further, the gift packaging kit 30 could include multiples of the gift box 12, gift box sleeve 14, envelope 24, card 26, and packing material 34. For example, the gift packaging kit 30 could include six gift boxes 12, six gift box sleeves 14, six envelopes 24, six cards 26, and six packing materials 34. In the depicted embodiment, the packing material 34 is one or more sheets of tissue paper. However, it should be understood that the packing material 34 could take on other forms.
[0041] Referring now to FIGS. 4-9, the Figures illustrate one embodiment of a method for assembling gift packaging 10 from a gift packaging kit 30. As shown in FIGS. 4-9, the method includes removing elements of the gift packaging kit 30 from the gift packaging kit container 32. Referring specifically to FIG. 4, the Figure shows the gift box 12 before assembly. As shown in the depicted embodiment (and as noted above), the gift box 12 includes a first gift box portion 16 and a second gift box portion 18. It should be understood that the gift box 12 may take on other forms. For example, the gift box 12 may not include more than one portion or the gift box 12 may include more than two portions. In the depicted embodiment, the first gift box portion 16 and the second gift box portion 18 are identical or substantially identical. Because the first gift box portion 16 and the second gift box portion 18 are identical or substantially identical in the depicted embodiment, the process for assembling the first gift box portion 16 and the second gift box portion 18 is the same. For purposes of brevity, reference will be made to the first gift box portion 16 when describing assembly. However, it should be understood that the process described with respect to the first gift box portion 16 is equally applicable to the second gift box portion 18.
[0043] As shown, the first gift box portion 16 includes at least one corner locking mechanism 36. In the depicted embodiment, each inside corner 38 includes a corner locking mechanism 36. It should be understood that not every inside corner 38 of the first gift box portion 16 necessarily includes a corner locking mechanism 36. For example, it may be sufficient to have two diagonally opposing inside corners 38 include corner locking mechanisms 36. Advantageously, the corner locking mechanism 36 eliminates the need for a gift wrapper to secure the inside corners of the gift box 12 with tape, for example. Instead, as is described in greater detail below, the corner locking mechanism 36 is a self-contained solution for securing the inside corners 38 of the first gift box portion 16 and preventing the first gift box portion 16 (and the gift box 12) from collapsing in on itself.
[0044] With continued reference to FIGS. 5-7, the corner locking mechanism 36 functions as follows. The inside corner 38 is formed at the intersection of a first wall 40 and a second wall 42 of the first gift box portion 16. A corner tab 44 located adjacent the intersection of the first wall 40 and the second wall 42 extends from the first wall 40 in a direction parallel or substantially parallel to the second wall 42. The corner tab 44 is connected to the first wall 40 at a proximal end 46 of the corner tab 44. The opposing distal end 48 of the corner tab 44 is not directly secured to the first wall 40, and thus, is free to move at least slightly relative to the second wall 42 by pivoting the corner tab 44 generally about its connection along the proximal end 46. The second wall 42 includes a locking orifice 50 spaced a distance from the intersection of the first wall 40 and the second wall 42. The distance that the locking orifice 50 is spaced from the intersection of first wall 40 and second wall 42 is approximately equal to the length of the corner tab 44 such that the distal end 48 of the corner tab 44 can be at least partially inserted through the locking orifice 50.
[0045] The locking orifice 50 is sized to receive at least a portion of the corner tab 44 therethrough. In the depicted embodiment, the locking orifice 50 is substantially triangular in shape with rounded corners and additional features such as the locking member 52 described further below. It should be understood that alternative shapes are possible for the locking orifice 50. For example, the locking orifice 50 could instead be substantially shaped like a narrow, elongated slit. The locking orifice 50 of the illustrated embodiment includes a locking member 52. [0046] With continued reference to FIGS. 5-7, to assemble the first gift box portion 16, a would-be gift giver first unfolds the first wall 40 and the second wall 42 along a plurality of respective fold lines 53 (FIG. 10), moving the first gift box portion 16 from a collapsed configuration to a non-collapsed, deployed configuration. The gift giver then inserts a portion of the distal end 48 of the corner tab 44 through the locking orifice 50 (i.e., from an interior 54 to an exterior 56 of the first gift box portion 16). Specifically, in the depicted embodiment, a corner 58 at the distal end 48 of the corner tab 44 is inserted through the locking orifice 50 such that the corner 58 rests against an exterior surface 60 of the locking member 52 (FIG. 5). This process is repeated for each inside corner 38 of the first gift box portion 16 that includes a corner locking mechanism 36. The process is then repeated for each inside corner 38 of the second gift box portion 18 that includes a corner locking mechanism 36. Because each of the first walls 40 and second walls 42 are unfolded from a collapsed configuration, the fold lines 53 will cause the first walls 40 and second walls 42 to return to the collapsed configuration unless the locking member 52 engages with the corner 58. When the portion of the distal end 48 of the corner tab 44 is inserted into the locking orifice 50 and the corner 58 passes from the interior surface of the second wall 42 to the exterior surface 60 of the locking member 52, the forces acting on each wall prevent the first gift box portion 16 from returning to the collapsed configuration. These forces therefore eliminate the need for separate taping or other forms of adhesive to secure the first gift box portion 16 in a deployed, non-collapsed configuration.
[0047] Referring now to FIG. 8, the Figure shows another portion of the method for assembling gift packaging 10 from a gift packaging kit 30. As shown in the Figure, after the first gift box portion 16 and the second gift box portion 18 are assembled in the manner described above, the packing material 34, if included in the gift packaging kit 30, can be inserted into one of the first gift box portion 16 or the second gift box portion 18. Thereafter, the gift (shown schematically only in dash-dot-dot lines) can be inserted into the one of the first gift box portion 16 or the second gift box portion 18. The packaging material 34 can be wrapped around the gift to secure same in position before continuing to assemble the gift box 30 as shown by the arrows in FIG. 8.
[0048] With further reference to FIG. 8, the Figure shows a portion of the method for assembling gift packaging 10 from a gift packaging kit 30. After the gift has been inserted into the one of the first gift box portion 16 or the second gift box portion 18, the first gift box portion 16 and the second gift box portion 18 can be assembled together to form the gift box 12. While the first gift box portion 16 and the second gift box portion 18 are identical or substantially identical, because of the construction of the first gift box portion 16 and the second gift box portion 18, one of the first gift box portion 16 or the second gift box portion 18 is capable of being inserted into the other of the first gift box portion 16 or the second gift box portion 18 to form the assembled gift box 12.
[0049] Referring now to FIG. 9, the Figure shows a further portion of the method for assembling gift packaging 10 from a gift packaging kit 30. After the gift box 12 has been assembled, the gift box 12 can be inserted into the gift box sleeve 14. The gift box sleeve 14 is configured (e.g., sized) such that the gift box fits snugly within the gift box sleeve 14. In the depicted embodiment, the gift box sleeve 14 is open at two opposing ends. It should be understood that the gift box sleeve 14 could be alternatively arranged. For example, the gift box sleeve 14 could be open on one end instead of two (see, e.g., FIG. 12). The gift box 12 may optionally be retained in the gift box sleeve 14 by tape or a similar fastener. Further alternatively, the gift box sleeve 14 could be closed on all ends and selectively openable on at least one end such that the gift box sleeve 14 fully encloses the gift box 12 within the gift box sleeve 14 and situates the gift box 12 properly within the gift box sleeve 14.
[0050] With continued reference to FIG. 9, the Figure shows the assembled gift packaging 10 from the gift packaging kit 30. After the gift packaging 10 has been assembled, the card 26 can be placed into the envelope 24 (both included in the depicted embodiment of the gift packaging kit 30) and then the envelope 24 can be inserted into the receptacle 22 on the gift box sleeve 14 (FIG. 1). As noted above, the card 26 and / or envelope 24 may include indicia or other elements (not shown) selected for a particular holiday or event for which the gift is being given. Further, the card 26 and / or envelope 24 may be coordinated with the indicia 20 on the gift box sleeve 14 such that the card 26, envelope 24, and / or gift box sleeve 14 share elements, share colors, include complementary colors, and so on.
[0051] Referring now to FIGS. 10 and 11, the Figures show embodiments of manufacturing blanks for a gift box portion 16, 18 and gift box sleeve 14, respectively. The manufacturing blanks are assembled to form the gift box portions 16, 18 and gift box sleeve 14, respectively. As shown in FIG. 10, the edges of the first wall 40 and the second wall 42 are connected (e.g. by adhesive) with the corner tab 44 on the inside of the resulting corner 38 when assembled. A plurality of diagonal fold lines 62 are located on the top corners of the second wall 42. The diagonal fold lines 62 allow the second wall 42 to fold on top of itself, enabling the first gift box portion 16 to move from a deployed, non-collapsed configuration to a collapsed configuration, if desired. FIG. 11 shows a plurality of fold lines 64 located on the gift box sleeve 14. A first fold line 66 shown on the manufacturing blank for the gift box sleeve 14 creates a sealing tab 68. [0053] Referring generally to FIGS. 1-12, the gift box kit 30 including a gift box 12 and gift box sleeve 14 (together: gift packaging 10), as described in the embodiments above and as shown in the drawings, achieves significant benefits over typical gift boxes. To this end, the corner locking mechanism 36 of the gift box portions 16, 18 and the gift box sleeve 14 collectively reduce or eliminate the frustrations typically associated with gift preparation. Particularly, the gift box 12 of the gift packaging 10 of the present disclosure includes a corner locking mechanism 36 which eliminates the need for a gift wrapper to secure the inside corners of the gift box 12 with tape, for example. Further, the gift packaging kit 30 includes the elements that one would need to “wrap” a gift—including the gift box sleeve 14 and other complementary elements like a card 26—in the included gift packaging 10, thereby eliminating the need for one to accumulate and store gift wrapping supplies, such as wrapping paper. The gift box kit 30 therefore provides several technical benefits and advantages over typical gift boxes available before this disclosure.

Claims
1. A gift packaging kit for preparing a gift item for an occasion, the gift packaging kit comprising:a gift box, including a first portion and a second portion configured to be assembled together and form an enclosure for receiving the gift item within, the first portion and the second portion each having a collapsed configuration and an assembled configuration;a gift box sleeve that is configured to slide over and at least partially cover an outer surface of the gift box in the assembled configuration;an envelope configured to be received within a receptacle located on the gift box sleeve;a card, removably receivable within the envelope;a packing material; anda container that is configured to hold the first portion in the collapsed configuration, the second portion in the collapsed configuration, the gift box sleeve in a collapsed state, the envelope, and the packing material in a folded configuration, thereby storing all elements of the gift packaging kit in a flattened, generally planar configuration to minimize space needs for storage or transport of the gift packaging kit.
2. The gift packaging kit of claim 1, wherein the first portion and the second portion of the gift box each further comprise two first walls and two second walls connected to one another to define corners of the respective first portion and second portion.
3. The gift packaging kit of claim 2, wherein the two first walls further comprise at least one corner tab extending generally parallel to an adjacent one of the second walls.
4. The gift packaging kit of claim 3, wherein the at least one corner tab further comprises a locking corner located on a distal end of the corner tab.
5. The gift packaging kit of claim 4, wherein the two second walls further comprise at least one locking orifice, including a locking member.
6. The gift packaging kit of claim 5, wherein the locking corner is configured to be received by the at least one locking orifice when the gift box is in the assembled configuration thereby preventing the gift box from entering the collapsed configuration.
7. The gift packaging kit of claim 5, wherein the locking member is generally triangular in shape and further includes an arcuate shape at a base corner portion of the triangular shape, the arcuate shape configured to retain the corresponding locking corner on the corner tab to maintain the first and second walls in the assembled configuration.
8. The gift packaging kit of claim 1, wherein the gift box sleeve further comprises decorative indicia.
9. The gift packaging kit of claim 1, wherein the card, the envelope, and the gift box sleeve further comprise complementary decorative indicia.
10. The gift packaging kit of claim 1, providing all elements needed for wrapping a gift item for the occasion.
11. A method of assembling a gift box, the method comprising:lifting a first wall and a second wall of a first portion of the gift box away from an interior of the first portion;lifting a first wall and a second wall of a second portion of the gift box away from an interior of the second portion;aligning a corner tab located on the first wall of the first portion with an interior side of the second wall of the first portion;placing a locking corner located on the corner tab of the first wall of the first portion within a corresponding locking orifice located on the second wall of the first portion such that the locking orifice receives at least a portion of the locking corner and the such that the locking corner passes from an interior of the first portion to an exterior of the first portion, forming an inside corner on the first portion;aligning a corner tab located on the first wall of the second portion with an interior side of the second wall of the second portion;placing a locking corner located on the corner tab of the first wall of the second portion within a corresponding locking orifice located on the second wall of the second portion such that the locking orifice receives at least a portion of the locking corner and the such that the locking corner passes from an interior of the second portion to an exterior of the second portion, forming an inside corner on the second portion; andassembling the first portion with the second portion such that an enclosure for receiving a gift item within is formed,wherein each of the locking orifices includes a locking member that is generally triangular in shape, with the locking member including an arcuate shape at a base corner portion of the triangular shape, the arcuate shape configured to retain the corresponding locking corner on the corner tab to maintain the first and second walls in an extended and assembled configuration.
12. The method of claim 11, wherein assembling the first portion with the second portion further includes inserting the first portion within the second portion.
13. The method of claim 11, wherein assembling the first portion with the second portion includes inserting the second portion within the first portion.

A method of assembling a gift packaging from a gift packaging kit, the method comprising:providing at least the following items in a gift packaging kit container: a gift box sleeve, a gift box having a first portion and a second portion, a packing material, an envelope, and a card;removing the items of the gift packaging kit from the gift packaging kit container, the items each being in a collapsed configuration;assembling the first portion and the second portion;placing a gift item and the packing material within the first portion;assembling the gift box by securing together the first and the second portions;inserting the gift box within the gift box sleeve such that the gift box sleeve at least partially covers the gift box;inserting the card into the envelope; andinserting the envelope into a receptacle located on the gift box sleeve.
16. The method of claim 15, wherein assembling the first portion and the second portion further includes:lifting a first wall and a second wall of the first portion away from an interior of the first portion;lifting a first wall and a second wall of the second portion away from an interior of the second portion;aligning a corner tab located on the first wall of the first portion with an interior side of the second wall of the first portion;placing a locking corner located on the corner tab of the first wall of the first portion within a corresponding locking orifice located on the second wall of the first portion such that the locking orifice receives at least a portion of the locking corner and the such that the locking corner passes from an interior of the first portion to an exterior of the first portion, forming an inside corner on the first portion;aligning a corner tab located on the first wall of the second portion with an interior side of the second wall of the second portion; andplacing a locking corner located on the corner tab of the first wall of the second portion within a corresponding locking orifice located on the second wall of the second portion such that the locking orifice receives at least a portion of the locking corner and the such that the locking corner passes from an interior of the second portion to an exterior of the second portion, forming an inside corner on the second portion.
17. The method of claim 15, wherein assembling the gift box comprises inserting the first portion within the second portion such that an enclosure for receiving the gift item within is formed.
18. The method of claim 15, wherein assembling the gift box comprises inserting the second portion within the first portion such that an enclosure for receiving the gift item within is formed.
19. The method of claim 15, wherein complementary decorative indicia is provided on the gift box sleeve, the card, and the envelope of the gift packaging kit.
