[0002] The present disclosure relates generally to trim for trimming penetrations in a building. The present disclosure relates more particularly to a trim for finishing penetrations in a building that includes exterior insulation and exterior siding. BACKGROUND
[0003] Buildings with penetrations (e.g., windows, doors, etc.) use trim to finish out around a perimeter of the penetrations to provide an aesthetically pleasing look. The building portion (e.g., a wall) may include a frame with an interior sheathing on one side and an exterior sheathing on the opposite side of the frame. The frame can accommodate insulation installed between the exterior and interior sheathings, as well as exterior insulation installed on the exterior sheathing. This exterior insulation can have a thickness from 1 / 8 inch (0.317 cm) to 1 / 4 inch (0.635 cm) to 1 / 2 inch (1.27 cm) to 3 / 4 inch (1.9 cm) to 2 inches (5.08 cm) to greater than 3 inches (7.62 cm) up to 10 inches (25.4 cm) in some installations. These larger thicknesses of exterior insulation can require additional steps to finish out a window or door, for example, that is installed in a penetration of the wall.
[0004] Some solutions use a buck installed on the exterior sheathing around the perimeter of the penetration, with the window or door mounted to the buck. The buck being sized to space the window or door away from the exterior sheathing to accommodate the thickness of the exterior insulation. The door or window can then be trimmed using standard trim options. However, this can weaken the attachment of the door or window to the exterior sheathing or frame, and it requires many additional steps in finishing the installation of the window or door in the penetration.
[0005] Other solutions require custom modifications to the windows or doors to accommodate the various thicknesses of exterior insulation. Therefore, improvements in trimming options for penetrations in a building are continually needed.SUMMARY

[0007] One general aspect includes an exterior trim with an elongated body; a first protrusion extending from the body in a first direction that is substantially parallel with an exterior surface of exterior insulation when the exterior trim is installed on a wall of a building; and a second protrusion extending from the body in a second direction, where the second direction is perpendicular to the first direction or the second direction is at an obtuse or acute angle compared to the first direction, and where the second protrusion extends from the body toward an interior of the wall and is configured to overlay an edge of the exterior insulation when the exterior trim is installed on the wall.
[0008] One general aspect includes an exterior trim with an elongated body, where the body, when viewed in cross-section, can include a perimeter wall with an interior cavity, where the perimeter wall may include: a first wall portion that extends in a first direction, where a width of the first wall portion is based on a thickness of exterior insulation installed or to be installed on a wall of a building; and a second wall portion joined to the first wall portion, where the second wall portion extends in a second direction which is generally perpendicular to the first direction, and where the second wall portion is configured to overlay ends of cladding or an edge of the exterior insulation when the cladding and the exterior trim are installed on the wall of the building.

[0033] The following description in combination with the figures is provided to assist in understanding the teachings disclosed herein. The following discussion will focus on specific implementations and embodiments of the teachings. This focus is provided to assist in describing the teachings and should not be interpreted as a limitation on the scope or applicability of the teachings.
[0034] FIG. 1 is a representative perspective view of a wall 10 of a building with a window 30 installed in a penetration therein and finished with trim pieces 50, 52, 54, 56 and windowsill 39 in accordance with certain embodiments. The window 30 can include one or more window panes 46, which can be slidably engaged with a frame 31 of the window 30. Generally, the frame 31 is positioned within a penetration of the wall 10, and secured to an exterior sheathing (not shown, see FIG. 3A) via a fastener flange 40. A fastener flange 40 can extend from any of the window supports (top, left, right, bottom supports 32, 34, 36, 38, respectfully) to engage the wall 10 (e.g., via exterior sheathing) around the perimeter of the wall penetration. If a door is installed in a penetration, then the door jamb is normally secured to the framing of the wall around the perimeter of the penetration. The trim options can be used to engage with the door jamb and cover edges of the exterior sheathing 70, exterior insulation 74, and cladding 72, while providing an aesthetically pleasing look. It should be understood that any of the exterior trim 100 embodiments described in this disclosure can be used to trim out a window or a door in a wall 10 of a building.
[0035] For a window 30, the fastener flange 40 can securely attach the frame 31 to the wall 10. Exterior insulation 74 and cladding 72 can be installed on the exterior of the wall 10 and formed around the perimeter of the penetration, into which the window 30 (or door) can be installed. The trim pieces 50, 52, 54, 56 and windowsill 39 can be installed to complete the window 30 installation in the wall 10. Various trim options can also be used to finish out a door installed in the wall 10. The disclosure describes various non-limiting embodiments for trimming a window 30 or door 20 installed in a wall 10 while accommodating various thicknesses of exterior insulation 74 that can be installed on the wall 10 between the exterior sheathing 70 and the cladding 72.
[0036] FIG. 2 is a representative partial cross-sectional top view along line 2-2, as indicated in FIG. 1, of a window 30 mounted in a wall 10 with exterior and interior trim installed. FIG. 2 shows a prior art window 30 installation in the wall 10. Typically a wall 10 can include multiple vertical supports 12 (e.g., studs) that form a frame with top and bottom plates attached to opposite ends of the vertical supports 12. The frame can extend vertically from a floor of the building. Exterior sheathing 70 can be installed to provide rigidity for the frame and provide structural support for attaching other elements of the wall 10. A penetration 11 can be formed in the wall 10 to receive a window 30 therein.
[0037] The exterior sheathing 70 can be attached to the vertical supports 12 via fasteners 2 (e.g., nails, screws, staples, etc.). Interior insulation 82 can be installed in the cavity in the wall 10 which is formed by adjacent vertical supports 12 and the exterior sheathing 70 (e.g., drywall, plywood, oriented strand board (OSB), etc.). A house wrap 60 can be attached to the exterior sheathing 70 to provide protection from environmental elements. The window 30 can be installed in the penetration 11 and attached to the exterior sheathing 70 via fasteners 6. Only one side of the window 30 is shown in FIG. 2, but two or more of the four sides of the window 30 can be attached to the exterior sheathing 70 around a perimeter of the penetration 11.
[0038] A strip of flashing 62 can be attached to the exterior of the fastener flange 40 and can extend past the fastener flange 40 to engage the house wrap 60. Cladding 72 can be installed on the wall 10 after the trim pieces (e.g., trim 52 and windowsill 39), such as the cladding that is configured to be positioned near the side of the window 30 and received in a J-track. Alternatively, the cladding 72 can be installed prior to installation of the exterior trim without the need for a J-track to finish the edges of the cladding 72. The interior sheathing 80 (e.g., drywall) can be installed on the vertical supports 12 to finish the interior of the wall 10 and the interior trim (e.g., trim 84, 86, 88) can also be installed to complete the interior of the window 30.

The exterior trim 100 can be attached to the wall 10 via fasteners 9 (e.g., nails, screws, staples, glue, etc.). As used herein, “attached” or “attachment” refers to one item being coupled to another item by a physical element. The two items can have other material disposed between the two items, but the two items are still seen as being “attached” even if the two items are not in physical contact with each other. Therefore, the exterior trim can be “attached” to the wall 10 or the vertical support 12, even if the house wrap, the exterior insulation 74, and the exterior sheathing 70 are disposed between them. The exterior trim 100 can also be seen as being “attached” to the wall 10 if it is glued to the exterior insulation 74.
[0041] The fasteners 9 can extend into the exterior insulation 74, into the exterior sheathing 70, or into the vertical supports 12, as indicated in several of the figures, such as FIGS. 3A, 22A, and 22B. The thickness L8 of the exterior insulation 74 can be ½ inch (12.7 mm), ¾ inch (19.05 mm), 1 inch (25.4 mm), 1 ¼ inches (31.75 mm), 1 ½ inches (38.1 mm), 1 ¾ inches (44.45 mm), 2 inches (50.8 mm), 2 ½ inch (63.5 mm), 3 inches (76.2 mm), 3 ½ inches (88.9 mm), 4 inches (101.6 mm), 4 ½ inches (114.3 mm), 5 inches (127 mm), 5½ inches (139.7 mm), 6 inches (152.4 mm), 6 ½ inches (165.1 mm), or 7 inches (177.8 mm). The thickness of the exterior insulation 74 can range from ½ inch (12.7 mm) to 10 inches (254 mm). The exterior trim 100 allows the window 30 to be finished out as an “innie” window, with the window frame 31 recessed back from the cladding 72. The wall 10 can include multiple vertical supports 12 (e.g., studs) with exterior sheathing 70 installed on an exterior side and interior sheathing 80 installed on an interior side. Interior insulation 82 can fill cavities in the wall 10 formed by adjacent vertical supports 12 and the interior and exterior sheathing 80, 70.
[0042] The exterior sheathing 70 can be attached to the vertical supports 12 via fasteners 2 (e.g., nails, screws, staples, glue, etc.). A house wrap 60 can be attached to the exterior sheathing 70 to provide protection from environmental elements. For example, the distance L2, which indicates the distance from the exterior surface of the exterior sheathing 70 to an exterior surface of the exterior insulation 74 can be substantially equal to the thickness L8 of the exterior insulation 74, since the gap between the exterior sheathing 70 and the exterior insulation 74 can be negligible. A portion of the window frame 31 can extend from the fastener flange 40 toward the exterior 16 and can be engaged with (or at least overlap) the exterior trim 100 to finish out the window 30. The exterior trim 100 can include a body 102 with protrusions 104 and 108 extending in perpendicular directions from the body 102. The body 102 and the protrusion 104 can form a gap 90 between the exterior insulation 74 and the protrusion 104, the gap 90 having a width L9. The width L9 can be sized such that the exterior trim 100 can receive and overlap (via the protrusion 104) the edges of the cladding 72, with width L9 being larger than the thickness L1 of the cladding 72.

[0047] All embodiments of the exterior trim 100 disclosed herein can be made from any suitable material, including, but not limited to, metal, polyvinyl chloride (PVC), foamed PVC, cellular PVC, chlorinated polyvinyl chloride (CPVC), acrylonitrile butadiene styrene (ABS), polyester, polyethylene terephthalate (PET), a cross-linked polyethylene, polypropylene, polystyrene, a thermoplastic polyolefin (TPO), polyurethane, nylon, engineered wood, or combinations thereof.

The exterior trims 100, 100’ can be installed with mitered ends that complementarily engage each other to provide a finished look. Similarly, exterior trim 100 can be installed on the right and top sides of the penetration 11, with each pair of adjacent exterior trim 100 having mitered ends (or any other preferred shaping) to provide an aesthetically pleasing look for the finished window. It should also be understood that the exterior trim 100 can be installed along the left, top, and right sides of a door frame to finish out the exterior trim for a door.
[0050] All embodiments of the exterior trim 100 disclosed herein can include exterior surfaces 110 and 112 that can provide smooth or textured surfaces as desired to produce the aesthetic look of the finished window or door. The exterior trim 100 can also be manufactured from colored material or painted before or after installation to provide a desired finished look for the finished window or door.

As can be seen, the exterior trim 100 for installation of a door 20 can be very similar to the exterior trim 100 for installation of a window 30, with the protrusion 108 of the exterior trim 100 extending into engagement with (or close proximity to) the door frame 87. For a door installation, the exterior trim 100 can be installed along the left, top, and right sides of the perimeter of the penetration 11, but not installed along the bottom side due to the threshold 89, which can provide a finished look at the bottom.

By smoothing the transition between the protrusion 104 and the body 102, stress forces can be distributed along the transition which can improve resistance to damage or breakage at the transition between the protrusion 104 and the body 102. Alternatively, or in addition, a transition between an inner surface of the protrusion 108 and the body 102 can be a radiused corner (not shown) as well. By smoothing the transition between the protrusion 108 and the body 102, stress forces can be distributed along the transition which can improve resistance to damage or breakage at the transition between the protrusion 108 and the body 102.

Claims
1. An exterior trim comprising:a body that is elongated;a first protrusion extending from the body in a first direction that is substantially parallel with an exterior surface of exterior insulation when the exterior trim is installed on a wall of a building; anda second protrusion extending from the body in a second direction, wherein the second direction is perpendicular to the first direction or the second direction is at an obtuse or acute angle compared to the first direction, and wherein the second protrusion extends from the body toward an interior of the wall and is configured to overlay an edge of the exterior insulation when the exterior trim is installed on the wall.
2. The exterior trim of claim 1, wherein the body has a generally rectangular cross-section, and wherein the first protrusion and the second protrusion extend outwardly from the rectangular cross-section.
3. The exterior trim of claim 1, wherein the first protrusion forms a gap between the first protrusion and the exterior insulation when the exterior trim is installed on the wall, and wherein the gap is configured to receive ends of cladding when the cladding is installed on the wall.
4. The exterior trim of claim 1, wherein the second protrusion is configured to overlay the edge of the exterior insulation when the exterior trim is installed on the wall, and wherein the exterior insulation is greater than 1 / 8 inch thick and less than or equal to 10 inches thick.
5. The exterior trim of claim 1, wherein the second protrusion extends from the body by a first distance, and wherein the first distance is determined by a thickness of the exterior insulation that is installed or is to be installed on the wall.
6. The exterior trim of claim 1, wherein a third protrusion extends from the body in the first direction, wherein the third protrusion and the first protrusion form a gap therebetween, and wherein the gap receives edges of cladding when the cladding is installed on the wall.
7. The exterior trim of claim 1, wherein the second protrusion is formed as a separate piece and attached to the body to form the exterior trim.
8. An exterior trim comprising:a body that is elongated, wherein the body, when viewed in cross-section, comprises a perimeter wall with an interior cavity, wherein the perimeter wall comprises:a first wall portion that extends in a first direction, wherein a width of the first wall portion is based on a thickness of exterior insulation installed or to be installed on a wall of a building; anda second wall portion joined to the first wall portion, wherein the second wall portion extends in a second direction which is generally perpendicular to the first direction, and wherein the second wall portion is configured to overlay ends of cladding or an edge of the exterior insulation when the cladding and the exterior trim are installed on the wall of the building.
9. The exterior trim of claim 8, wherein the perimeter wall further comprises a third wall portion that is parallel with the second wall portion and spaced away from the second wall portion, wherein the third wall portion is configured to secure the exterior trim to the wall when the third wall portion is attached to either the exterior insulation or exterior sheathing installed on the wall of the building.
10. The exterior trim of claim 9, wherein the first wall portion covers an edge of the exterior insulation when the exterior trim is installed on the wall.
11. The exterior trim of claim 8, wherein the body comprises a first body and a second body, wherein the first body comprises a first perimeter wall that comprises the first wall portion and the second wall portion, wherein the first body further comprising a first retention feature, wherein the second body comprises a second perimeter wall that comprises a first engagement feature that is configured to engage the first retention feature with the first engagement feature and attach the first body to the second body.
12. The exterior trim of claim 11, wherein the second body further comprises a third wall portion that extends in the first direction and a fourth wall portion joined to the third wall portion, wherein the fourth wall portion extends in the second direction, and wherein the fourth wall portion is configured to overlay ends of cladding when the cladding and the exterior trim are installed on the wall of the building.
13. The exterior trim of claim 12, wherein the first wall portion of the first body is aligned with the third wall portion of the second body when the first engagement feature is engaged with the first retention feature.
14. The exterior trim of claim 12, wherein the first wall portion of the first body is offset from the third wall portion of the second body when the first engagement feature is engaged with the first retention feature.
15. The exterior trim of claim 11, wherein the first body comprises a second retention feature and the second body comprises a second engagement feature, wherein the second body is attached to the first body when the second engagement feature engages the second retention feature.
16. A method comprising:forming an exterior trim that is configured to be installed along a penetration in a wall of a building to overlay an edge of exterior insulation installed on the wall, wherein the exterior trim comprises a first protrusion extending from a body and a second protrusion extending from the body, and wherein the body is elongated;determining a thickness of the exterior insulation;determining a desired width of the second protrusion based on the thickness of the exterior insulation; andforming the second protrusion to the desired width.
17. The method of claim 16, further comprising forming the exterior trim via extrusion, molding, removing unwanted material, or assembling multiple pieces together.
18. The method of claim 16, wherein the thickness of the exterior insulation is greater than 1 / 8 inch and less than or equal to 10 inches.
19. The method of claim 16, wherein the first protrusion is configured to overlay ends of cladding installed over the exterior insulation.
20. The method of claim 16, wherein the second protrusion comprises a planar portion and a flange portion, and wherein forming the exterior trim further comprises inserting the flange portion in a longitudinal recess in the body.
